The purpose of this course is to build off of the skills and love of the water learned in StarBabies. The course does not teach children to be accomplished swimmers; it does prepare young children for the SeaSprites level of the Starfish Swim School. One parent or trusted caregiver must be in the water with each child. Swim diapers are required.

SeaSprites (Ages 3-5)
Designed to meet the needs of pre-schoolers, this class will develop a high comfort in the water, a readiness to swim, and for those children who are developmentally ready, teach beginning swim skills. Students work toward development of the five core swimming competencies and receive color level patches for each achievement. Approaches teaching skills through creative, fun activities.

SeaStars (Ages 6-8)
Students work toward development of the five core swimming competencies and receive color level patches for each achievement. The color levels are used to divide students into broad ability groups. Children progress at individual rates with the opportunity to learn the core swimming skills and progress to advanced strokes. Learning is self-paced but challenging.

SwimStars (Ages 9 & Older)
Students are divided by age group (Ages 9 – 14, Adults) Classes are taught along the same philosophy as SeaStars.

StrokeStars (Any age that meets skill prerequisite)
Swimmers refine freestyle and learn stroke technique for backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and more!

AngelFish
The AngelFish program is designed to meet the needs of your special needs child. These classes are taught along the same philosophy as the Starfish Swim School. The classes will provide necessary teaching adaptations and or adaptive equipment that may be required to make your child as independent and successful in the water as possible. Private lessons are available for children and adults of all ages.

Disney on Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic in Savannah

September 29th, 2011

Pinocchio wins as the most talented ice-skater in “Disney on Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic” at the Savannah Civic Center Thursday. But the crowd favorite when it comes to storyline, songs & characters was the Lion King.

Opening night of Disney on Ice was a big hit. This mama’s favorite part of the two-hour show was “It’s a Small World After all.” Kids swooned over the princesses, of course, and the Toy Story characters & Goofy driving the zamboni.

If you’re headed to the show this weekend, cue for the best time to run to the bathroom right before intermission is the Small World bit. Don’t forget: SouthernMamas.com readers receive 20% off tickets using code “mamas”!! VIP’s are not included.

We hope everyone else who attended opening night tonight (including the four SouthernMamas.com winners of family four-packs: Penny Maggioni, Nikki Haborak, Sarah Nussbaum,  Laura Gresham) enjoyed the show as much as we did.

To order tickets by phone, call (800) 351-7469 or (912) 651-6556. Or click here.

Live Ear Tubes Surgery on Twitter

September 28th, 2011

If your child has lots of ear infections, chances are your pediatrician has mentioned ear tubes as a possible solution.

You can find out all about ear tubes surgery Friday via a live surgery on Twitter.

More than 80 percent of children will have an ear infection before the age of 3.

If children are having recurrent ear infections or have fluid behind the ear drum that won’t go away, a doctor may recommend ear tubes.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta performs thousands of ear tube procedures each year. With a surgical team dedicated to treating pediatric patients, Children’s specializes in kids. From the size of the equipment to the anesthesia (sleep medicine) to the pediatric-trained staff, Children’s is tailored to meet the specific needs of children.

Follow an ear tube surgery via the Children’s Twitter account, @ChildrensATL, Friday, Sept. 30 beginning at 7:30 a.m. and see the experiences – from anesthesia to recovery – a 1-year-old and her mom have during the procedure. For more information about ear tubes, visit www.choa.org/eartubes .
