Savannah Summer Camps 2014

Kids Art Classes at S.P.A.C.E.

Savannah’s Place for Art, Culture and Education (S.P.A.C.E.) is now registering students for its Fall visual arts classes and workshops Session Four and Five.  Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Sessions begin September 17  – October 27 & October 19 – December 14. Both sessions are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs S.P.A.C.E. studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.  Registration forms are available online at www.savannahga.gov/arts or by calling (912) 651-6783.

Three and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops.  Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, painting and drawing.  New offerings this session include children’s cartooning workshops and a cartooning class, lapidary stone cutting for jewelry design, expanded drawing and painting classes, beginning watercolor and Raku firings.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required.  Credit cards are accepted.  Class schedule and registration forms are available online at www.savannahga.gov/arts or by calling (912) 651-6783.

Youth Workshops

Parent & Child Clay, Ages 4+
Instructor: Clair Buckner
This class will allow for a creative ceramic experience to be shared by children and their parents. The class will focus on coil and slab construction as well as different decorative techniques.

In this workshop students will learn basic cartooning skills and will create simple cartoon characters.

This class will allow for a creative experience to be shared by children and their parents. Participants learn basic embroidery stitches and make a simple project such as a phone case or small stuffed animal.

Adult Workshops
Raku Firing
Instructor: Clair Buckner
This ancient Japanese ceramic firing technique in which 2000° glowing red hot works are removed from the kiln and placed into a fire chamber filled with combustibles is sure to inflame and inspire. Personal bisque fired works can be glazed and fired. Pieces will be available for those who want to participate.

Stained Glass Box, Ages 17+

Enjoy a day of camaraderie and stained glass: start and finish a stained-glass box. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of working with stained glass in 3-D.

This introductory class will teach young students the fundamentals of throwing clay on the potter’s wheel, hand building and sculpture. Students will trim and finish their works of art with a variety of glazes.

Beginning Watercolor, Ages 17+
6 Weeks
Instructor: Oksana Gruszka
Each class will have instruction in different areas of the basics of watercoloring and progress to more advanced techniques. Areas of focus will include understanding the color wheel; the use, types, and care of brushes; using different kinds of watercolor paint and paper; exploring different painting techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and dry-on-dry, and the preservation of watercolor paintings.

Capturing Architecture in Colored Pencil, Ages 17+

Focus on scale, proportion and perspective while drawing the architecture of Savannah. Drawings will begin in pencil, then adding color, texture and shadow with colored pencils.

Beginning Metalsmithing, Ages 17+

This is an introductory course to metalsmithing. The focus of this course is to introduce basic tools and techniques used by jewelers. Students will use both sterling silver and copper to create several pieces of jewelry. Basic soldiering skills will also be taught. Expect to get your hands dirty!

This beginners class will teach you the steps for tumbling rocks, creating free-form designs and cutting cabochons of your favorite rocks and  minerals. The final pieces will be beautifully polished works ready for jewelry settings.

Fee includes materials for use in this 6-week class and firing of work produced during this open studio. (This six session class offers the freedom to come 1, 2  or 3 times a week. Additional sessions can be purchased as needed.)
$135 for six sessions and 50# clay (one bag new clay and one bag recycled clay)

This hand-building class is open to all skill levels. This class will help develop basic hand-building skills in clay construction, glazing, and decorative techniques. Learn techniques such as pinching, coiling, and using slabs to make basic forms such as bowls or vases on up to more complex forms.

Beyond the Bowl, Ages 17+

Beyond the Bowl….If you are ready to move beyond the typical clay shapes you are making on the wheel, we are ready to help. This is an intermediate/advanced class focusing on more complex shapes and design elements.
