May: A T. rex Named Sue
This summer, the museum will bring A T. rex Named Sue to Jacksonville. This traveling exhibit from Chicago’s The Field Museum features a cast skeleton of the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered – SUE! At 42-feet-long and 12-feet high, SUE is an impressive sight to see!

June 18 – August 10: Summer Adventure Camps
During summer, the museum really comes to life as hundreds of children descend upon MOSH for Summer Adventure Camps. This year is no exception! MOSH will have a fun-filled program schedule for Pre-K through 6th graders. In addition to about 20 different program topics, kids will also get to explore the blockbuster summer exhibit, A T. rex Named Sue. And, some campers will also get to go on off-site field trips!

July 14: Tonca’s Birthday
Join the fun as Daisy May, MOSH’s resident opossum, throws a birthday bash for Tonca, MOSH’s 46-year-old alligator snapping turtle. Party activities will include face painting, party games, animal encounters and cake, of course! The party will culminate with Tonca’s annual weigh-in in the newly renovated Hixon Native Plant Courtyard. Don’t miss one of the most anticipated events of the year!

August 1: Senior Days
Senior Days is a special program for members of the senior citizen community that includes a coffee and donut reception, an educational presentation, and free time to explore the museum. The program starts at 9:45 a.m. and is $6 per senior citizen. Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 226 for details.

September 27: MOSH After Dark: Beer Brewing Workshop with Intuition Ale Works
Learn about the science behind beer making from the brew-masters of Intuition Ale Works. On September 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. guests will learn about the science and history of beer before moving on the highlight of the evening – a beer tasting! Be on the lookout for registration for this event as it WILL sell out!

October: Green Revolution
Green Revolution is an innovative eco-zibit from the Smithsonian. What makes this exhibit unique is that it does not arrive on gas-guzzling trucks. Instead, exhibit plans are transmitted online for MOSH staff to create the exhibit from recycled and repurposed materials. Come check out what MOSH staff concocts!

Asperger’s Support Group: How Social Difficulties Effect Emotional Health
Topic: Jennifer will discuss how the social difficulty a person with ASD experiences can affect their emotional health, as well as the emotional health of their caregivers. She will specifically discuss how counseling interventions such Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Social Skills Groups can help develop positive coping skills to stress, provide tools for positive interactions, and increase self-esteem.
Jennifer has over 14 years of experience in working with children and adolescents with special needs and their families in a variety of roles and settings including early intervention, daycare, public school, and private organizations. She has presented to support groups, community organizations, and state conferences on a variety of topics including Understanding Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism and Work Related Goals, and Social Skills for children with Autism.

Jennifer is a mother to four children, three of whom have a diagnosis of Autism.

Jennifer’s personal experience, paired with professional knowledge provides for a more in depth perceptive and understanding. She offers an array of services based on the client’s needs such as behavioral consultation, social skills group therapy, family and individual therapy and coaching. A healthy balance between behavioral and emotional goals is a key component of all the services

Highlights include a pregnancy Q&A session with Dr. Darren Preuninger, who is in practice at Provident OB/GYN Associates in Richmond Hill; a spring fashion show by Motherhood Maternity; a prenatal yoga demonstration; healthy cooking-for-two demonstrations; prize drawings and more. Plus, there will be exhibitors with products and services of interest to parents-to-be.

Admission is free. The City Center, which is co-sponsoring the Expo, is located at 520 Cedar St. in J.F. Gregory Park.

A colorful parade of students, musicians, local dignitaries, and costumed characters is preceded by a military color guard and marching band. Beginning at Forsyth Park and continuing around all five squares of Bull Street, the procession culminates with a program in front of City Hall, where the mayor and other officials bring greetings and present awards for the annual Banner Competition.

Armstrong Atlantic State University will proudly host the Golden Dragon Acrobats, the world’s leading touring Chinese acrobatic troupe, with a special live performance at the university’s Fine Arts Auditorium, 11935 Abercorn St., on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. This event is hosted by the Campus Union Board at Armstrong.

The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time-honored tradition that began more than 2,500 years ago. The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premier Chinese acrobatic touring company.

Hailing from the central Chinese city of Xian, the troupe features talented jugglers, contortionists and acrobats. In November 2005, the Golden Dragon Acrobats made their Broadway debut to a sold-out audience at the New Victory Theater, New York’s ultimate theater for kids and families. Their Broadway run led to adoration and standing ovations from audiences of all ages and universal critical acclaim.

The reputation of the company is rooted in a commitment to the highest production values and a remarkable attention to artistic detail. World-renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty.

Science Bowl at Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah

Armstrong will host eight teams to compete at the Subregional Georgia Science Bowl, sponsored by Siemens Industry, Inc. The Georgia Science Bowl is a Jeopardy-like competition for middle and high school students covering the areas of science, energy and mathematics. The state competition serves as a qualifying competition for the National Science Bowl held in Washington, D.C.

After subregional competitions are held, the top 12 teams will travel to Savannah on February 25 to test their breadth of scientific and mathematic knowledge on the Armstrong campus during the final round of the Georgia Science Bowl.

Mommy and Me program at the newly renovated University of Georgia Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island starts on Saturdays in February: Feb. 4, 11, 18 & 25th. Time: 10 – 10:45 am.

Mommy & Me are programs for toddlers age 1-4 years old. These programs encompass a variety of learning techniques that allow for the development of motor skills, understanding different shapes, sizes, weights, and movements among a variety of marine animals native to Georgia waterways, and the ability to identify the difference between fish, crabs, turtles, and invertebrates.

The programs include hands-on experiences with different animals, arts and crafts, a story time, and a game.

Mommy & Me will take place in four-week sessions on Saturdays this February from 10:00 to 10:45 AM. These programs have a limit of 20 participants/program and advance registration is required by calling (912) 598-2496 or by emailing fish@uga.edu. More info here.

Do you want to shop early for the best selection? Come to the Shop for a Cause Presale on Thursday, February 23 from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. High Cotton Kids is partnering with The Next Generation at Memorial Health Backus Children’s Hospital to help brighten the day of a child in the hospital. HCK will be collecting gift cards to be used for birthday celebrations and/or end-of- chemotherapy parties. Please bring your gift cards to Target, Walmart or Toys-R-Us and shop one hour early, before the show opens to the public! Minimum amount of $5 is requested and more is greatly appreciated! Consignor registration is open now through Sunday, February 19th! Clean out and cash in, all consignors keep 65% of your sales! Bring your gently loved children’s items to our consignment marketplace and let HCK do the selling. High Cotton Kids also accepts high end maternity clothing, children’s furniture, art work, baby and nursery necessities (ie. bouncers, exercausers, etc.), strollers, toys, books, dvds and more. New Saturday class starts Feb. 4: Bilingual Speech Therapy & Language Center in Savannah now offers a new Saturday class for school-aged children ages 4 1/2 to 12 years of age!
