Tara Feis Irish Festival returns this year during the nationally renowned St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The famous non-alcoholic FREE Irish celebration is set to take place at Emmet Park in downtown Savannah Sat. March 15, 11am – 5pm. The event is sponsored by the City of Savannah and is free and open to the public.

The festival opens at 11 AM with an impressive traditional Irish ceremony featuring the Parade Grand Marshal and local dignitaries in a procession of colorful flags and bagpipes. The day continues with live performances, food, crafts, rides and games.

Savannah’s own Harry O’ Donoghue will emcee the main stage as well as treat the audience to his own performances. Harry will also do a set with local vocalist Cc Witt and fiddler Coleen Settle. The main stage will feature performances of The Irish Dancers of Savannah and the Glor na Daire Academy of Irish Dance.

With the event being held two days before the parade, a larger audience is expected.

The Tara Feis children’s stage will feature a full day of entertainment including the puppets of Conrad Hartz, the magic of Magic Marc Dunston, interactive music and stories with Jamie and Laura Keena and of course the Irish step dancers.

The Island Recreation Association and title sponsor Hilton Head Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram will host this annual family event, which will have inflatable rides, pony rides and entertainment. There will be a “snow field” where little ones can build a mini snowman, make snowballs or even snow angels!   For the kids who have never seen snow, this is the perfect event!

Save your Christmas trees after the holidays at the Bring One for the Chipper recycling event.

Bring One for the Chipper will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the following locations. Christmas tree mulch will be used by the City for parks and neighborhood beautification projects throughout Savannah.
The free service is available at the following locations:

Program Length: The experience will take approximately 60 minutes. No admissions after 8 p.m.

About the Program: Glistening by candlelight, the Federal-style home welcomes visitors to an experience emphasizing the end-of-year celebrations of early 19th century Savannahians, including the Davenport household, who lived in the fine brick home on Columbia Square. Light refreshments, music and skilled interpreters, who show visitors through the home, are among the highlights of the presentation.

The experience requires that guests be able to walk up and down stairs and maneuver in the candlelit rooms.

Final Wknd of December Nights & Holiday Lights in Savannah will include holiday concerts

Holiday Light displays in Savannah This upcoming weekend is the final weekend of DECEMBER NIGHTS AND HOLIDAY LIGHTS, running Thursday December 19th through Tuesday December 24th from 6-9pm  @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah (formerly called Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens), 2 Canebrake Road, Savannah.

This walking tour of our historic gardens takes you through a magical winter wonderland of over 250,000 lights and lighted displays. Tram rides available for the disabled, Saturday night pictures with Santa and concessions at Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen add to the festivities.

Friday night (12/20/13) the Armstrong Atlantic Youth Orchestra will be performing a concert featuring classical holiday tunes, and Sunday 12/22/13, enjoy the Wesley Monumental United Methodist church choir.

$5 per person, cash only please no smoking or pets allowed.

Best local holiday light displays. Planning on driving around and checking out the best local holiday house decorations? From giant Santa snow globes to computerized Christmas lights animated with music, we have your guide to local home holiday light displays.

Displays not to be missed include:

182 Mills Run Drive near Chatham Parkway (the owner took 2012 off but is back this year) 140K lights and 20K RGB lights, water fountains and snow machines. Hours 6-10 Sunday-Thursday  and 6-11 Friday & Saturday.

A beloved old-fashioned holiday yard display that on certain nights features hot chocolate for visitors and even Santa visits at 512 Gordonston Ave., Savannah.

Computerized animated “dancing” house light displays include:

We were sad to hear that the popular computerized animated “dancing” lights house at The Whitemarsh Island home of the Kesslers in the Battery point subdivision at 105 Mapmaker Lane is not up this year. However, here are few other computerized “dancing” lights display animated with music. Lights choreographed to blink, twink and fade in red, blue, green and white, in sync with a custom-mixed soundtrack of holiday tunes.

Tybee Polar Plunge 2014The Tybee Polar Plunge returns to Tybee Island on Wednesday, January 1, 2014! Join thousands of people and take the plunge into the brisk Atlantic Ocean at 12 noon on New Year’s Day. It’s a great way for the ENTIRE FAMILY to start off the New Year!

WHERE: Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion – Tybee Island, GA 31328

WHEN: January 1, 2014

COST: Adults $25, Kids under 12 $15.

“Gang of Goofs” Contest and Parade

The 2014 Tybee Polar Plunge also welcomes the return of the “Gang of Goofs” contest and Parade! Wanted: groups of at least three (3) or more to dress up in their craziest, wackiest and funniest costumes! The Goofs will parade in front of an esteemed panel of judges to compete for some great prizes! Details here.

You can register for the Polar Plunge or the Gang of Goofs contest in person at the Tybrisa Roundabout on Saturday, December 28, Sunday, December 29, Monday, December 30st, and Tuesday, December 31 from 1 pm – 4 pm or on Tuesday, January 1 from 9am – 11:30am at the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion (deadline to register for the Gang of Goofs contest on January 1st is 10:30am).
