Historical Civil War demonstrations @ Old Fort Jackson, Dec. 20-21, Savannah

Monday, November 24th, 2014

Civil War Demonstrations at Old Fort Jackson Savannah Bring the kids to Old Fort Jackson in Savannah on Sat. Dec. 20th & 21st for a special demonstration and participation.

This December marks the 150th anniversary of the evacuation of Fort Jackson. Several days before December 20, 1864 General William Hardee arrived to take command of Savannah’s defenses. He refused General Sherman’s demand to surrender and ordered the evacuation of the city and all surrounding defenses. To commemorate this event Old Fort Jackson will offer engaging programs throughout the weekend of December 20th and 21st.

On Saturday, December 20th, join members of the 22nd Georgia Heavy Artillery as they prepare to follow General Hardee’s orders to render the fort useless to the Union Army and evacuate.

On Sunday, December 21st learn about the conditions of the fort and discover what happened during the Union Occupation. Get to know the 55th Massachusetts, an African American unit that that fought in a number of battles in the south and were the last Federal Troops ever to be stationed at the fort.

Throughout the weekend experience the life of the soldiers at Fort Jackson during the last days of the Civil War.

Activities both days begin at 10 am and will include musket demonstrations, cannon drill and firing, marching, and other activities that soldiers participated in while at Fort Jackson.

“Savannah in the Civil War” Film @ Jepson Center, Savannah

Saturday, November 22nd, 2014

“Savannah in the Civil War,” A Film by Michael Jordan, Dec. 11

6 p.m. December 11 @ Jepson Center, 207 W. York St., on Telfair Square Savannah
Local filmmaker/historian Michael Jordan’s 90-minute film highlights events and people who played a role in Savannah’s Civil War story. More than a dozen historians discuss forces that shaped Savannah’s war years, and thirty local actors portray important Savannahians of the time. Characters include Suzie King Taylor, the only African-American woman to keep a journal during the war, and Francis Bartow, who suggested gray as the Confederate military uniform color. Learn about the massive prisoner-of-war camp in that housed thousands of Union prisoners in Forsyth Park, the dramatic battle between ironcal warships in Ossabaw Sound and other key events.

After the screening, Jordan will participate in Q&A discussion. The movie is 90 minutes long and free for Telfair members or $12 for non-members.

Watch a short clip from the film online at www.civilwar-savannah.com.

9:30-10:15am
Telfair Museums is excited to introduce its newest program for the stroller set! Join Telfair Museums for a monthly gathering where parents & caregivers can enjoy a morning at the museum while also engaging infants with art. Babies thrive on dynamic environments, so each month we’ll explore a different set of artwork. There will be touchable toys for the little ones, adult conversation for you & like-minded art lovers. Finish your visit with a leisurely talk over complimentary coffee & tea in Telfair Museum’s café. Strollers, crying & older siblings are all welcome here.

December 18 – Color/Contrast

November 20 – Magic Touch
Art can be made out of all sorts of things – silver, plastic, wood, and so much more. Explore an eclectic mix of artwork in Savannah Collects and activate your sense of touch. Then use your own hands to create multi-media sculptures.

These shiny metals aren’t just for jewelry. Take a walk with us to explore the various metals and materials used in sculptures around the museum. Then you‘ll create your own modified brass rubbings in silver and gold.
