Reinterpret ideas of belonging at SCAD MOA Teen Night workshop with artist Barthélémy Toguo
Join exhibiting artist Barthélémy Toguo for a special tour of his exhibition Urban Requiem. Following the tour, the artist will lead a postcard-making workshop based on themes of exile and belonging, issues the artist explores in his own artistic practice.

Admission to the workshop is $10. All skill levels welcome. Boxed dinner provided.

Seuss Fest is back!

On Sat. March 5 2022, local families are invited to celebrate the fun and whimsical world of Dr. Seuss during Seuss Fest.

Event attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character in honor of the children’s book author.

The event will take place from 10AM-1PM @ Savannah Children’s Museum, 655 Louisville Rd. Savannah, GA 31401.

Museum educators will lead the group with Seuss stories, games, and activities. Dancing Oobleck, a Read-A-Thon, and a rhyming scavenger hunt maze are only a few of the fun activities in which families can participate.

Community partners will provide Seuss-filled fun throughout the day. Savannah Tree Foundation and Live Oak Public Library will participate with tree saplings and games. The Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah will have several interactive activities including crafts, games, and healthy snacks. The University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant will bring their Yertle the Turtle touch tank. Savannah Children’s Theatre will share performances from Seussical the Musical. The Big Cheese food truck and Savannah Square Pops will also be on-site.

Admission to Seuss Fest is included in the cost of regular admission to Savannah Children’s Museum, $8 for all guests 18 months and older. Admission can be purchased online here ahead of time.

Guests can enjoy interactive exhibits and engaging tours at each site through hands-on, immersive activities that illustrate the narratives of Savannah’s past.

FREE 10th Annual Fit Kids Fest, Sat. Feb. 19 2022 @ Savannah Children’s Museum
Annual event promotes wellness for K–12 students

Junior League of Savannah will host its annual 2022 Fit Kids Fest at a new location: the Savannah Children’s Museum, on Sat. Feb. 19 2021.

This engaging free event teaches the importance of growing a fit body and mind through a fun and interactive day designed for children of all ages and their parents.

This engaging event promotes overall wellness for K–12 students and introduces participants to academic resources in the community in addition to teaching how to make healthy choices and live an active lifestyle. Activities for the 2022 Fit Kids Fest will include free, full access to the Savannah Children’s Museum including a life-size maze, slides, and sensory garden; a healthy scavenger hunt; a trail mix remix station; and face painting.

The first 150 children to arrive will receive a free t-shirt and other swag items. Raffle prizes, including sports equipment, will be awarded to participants. The Savannah school with the most students in attendance will receive a cash prize for sports/PE equipment.

Seven-day FREE family passes available @ Live Oak Public Libraries for free admission to Jepson Center, Telfair Academy

Explore new exhibitions with FREE Telfair admission!

Check out a free seven-day family pass to the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy -both in Savannah- at Live Oak Public Libraries for up to eight people per visit.

This pass is only valid at the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy.

At 16 library locations across Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties, library card holders can now check out a seven-day family pass—usable for up to eight people per visit—that grants free admission to the Jepson Center for the Arts and the Telfair Academy in downtown Savannah. Each library location will have one pass available.

Both museums are open from 10AM-5PM seven days per week and house much of Telfair’s over 7,000-item permanent collection, as well as featured exhibitions, stunning architecture, and historical context. Upcoming exhibitions at the Jepson Center include Pulse: Chul-Hyun Ahn, (Jan. 13-Aug. 7), a series of interactive digital works by the Korean artist; Bruce Davidson: Face to Face (Feb. 4-May 1), a major career retrospective of the noted New York photographer; and Contemporary Spotlight: New Acquisitions from the Brandywine Workshop (Feb. 4-May 1), a selection of print work from leading Black artmakers including Emma Amos, Sonya Clark, Faith Ringgold, and Betye Saar.

In addition to visiting the Telfair Academy and the Jepson Center, Live Oak Public Libraries card holders can also check out free passes and obtain discounted tickets to state parks, museums, and other cultural centers across Georgia. Find details on those free passes here. 

Super Museum Sunday

From noon to 4PM this Sun. Feb. 6, Telfair Museums also will offer free admission to all of its sites as part of Super Museum Sunday. This free day includes tours of the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Family activity kits will be offered at the Jepson Center, with investment provided by the City of Savannah, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and other sponsors.

Develop your young person’s skills as a photographer. All young people are artists. With that in mind, this class will approach photography as professionals do, studying the Elements of Art. Keeping a social distance, the camp will meet outside as much as possible as we explore our environment in Telfair Square and other nearby locations. Class will use DSLR digital cameras and learn about exposure, and a few historical methods involving film. Photography is fun and accessible to everyone.

This year’s SCAD MOA Super Museum Sunday event includes a special screening of the SCAD-produced documentary A Thousand Miles and Counting, which explores the historic journey of William and Ellen Craft as they traversed the country — including the site where the museum now stands — in pursuit of freedom from enslavement. A mini workshop for school-aged children related to themes and ideas in the film also is presented.

Georgia State Railroad Museum, Old Fort Jackson, and Savannah Children’s Museum will have special openings on Mon. Jan. 17 2022. Georgia State Railroad Museum and Old Fort Jackson will be open from 9AM-4PM and Savannah Children’s Museum will be open from 9:30AM to 2:30PM.

Georgia State Railroad Museum will have daily tours and Site Tours by Train Friday through Monday. Train rides will be on the hour from 10AM-3PM.

Old Fort Jackson will have daily interpretation and cannon firings at 11AM and 2PM.

Savannah Children’s Museum will have ongoing activities throughout the day with interactive story time at 10:30AM and a bottle rocket launch at noon.

Georgia State Railroad Museum, Old Fort Jackson, and Savannah Children’s Museum feature large, open-air spaces and employ enhanced sanitizing and distancing protocols.

NEW DATES FOR PULSE ART + TECHNOLOGY FESTIVAL 2022, Savannah, March 2-6 

Telfair’s annual PULSE Art + Technology Festival returns for its 15th year March 2-6 2022 (after being rescheduled from January) with two exhibitions exploring illusion and meditative applications of technology in art.

The exhibition Chul-Hyun Ahn: Beyond focuses on the illusionistic light sculpture of Baltimore-based artist Chul-Hyun Ahn, whose work invites viewers into contemplative infinite spaces. A companion exhibition in the museum’s TechSpace includes work by artists exploring light, illusion, and movement to create meditative experiences, including Ryan Buyssens’ prismatic light sculpture Chromatica, Aidan Lincoln Fowler’s video infinity mirror, and video sculptures and other works by artists including Max Almy, Teri Yarbrow, Greg Finger, Zhou Fan, Kelley McClung, Guanzhi Kou, and Skye Hu.

In addition to the galleries, PULSE will include the immersive video installation Return in the Jepson Center atrium by John Collette for the three evenings of the festival.

Seasonal Changes to Georgia State Railroad Museum and Old Fort Jackson’s Operating Hours

Georgia State Railroad Museum and Old Fort Jackson will have a seasonal change in operating hours beginning Mon. Dec. 6 2021 for the Winter season.

The new hours will be Wednesday through Saturday, 9AM-4PM with the museums being closed on Mondays and Tuesdays through February.

Both sites will have a special opening after Christmas from Dec. 26 through Dec. 31; Martin Luther King, Jr Day (Jan. 17), and President’s Day (Feb. 21).

Georgia State Railroad Museum will have blacksmithing demonstrations Wednesdays and Thursdays and will welcome visitors to take a Site Tour by Train on Fridays and Saturdays through December.

Old Fort Jackson will continue to have cannon firings at 11AM and 2PM on all operating days.

Georgia State Railroad Museum and Old Fort Jackson feature large, open-air spaces and employ enhanced sanitizing and distancing protocols.

Site Tours by Train are limited and boarding passes are issued on a first come, first served basis.

Nurture your talent at SCAD MOA drawing workshop for teens in Savannah

Let your creativity flow at this weekly drawing workshop for teens 4-5PM on Wednesdays during December 2021 at SCAD MOA. Museum educators, SCAD students and faculty, and special guests offer tips and tutorials to perfect your drawing skills.

This workshop is free for teen museum members and teen SCAD students with a valid SCAD Card. Open to the teen public with the cost of museum admission.

Featuring a holiday-themed diesel locomotive train ride experience, live demonstrations by Lowcountry Turners artfully hand-crafting toys available for purchase, caroling by Savannah Stage Company, and merry dancing with Minick Family Music. Decorate a holiday card to send to families at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire, or enjoy complimentary donuts and coffee provided by The Salvation Army’s Mobile Canteen. Santa Claus will visit with the children to hear their Christmas wishes.

Members of Coastal Heritage Society receive a discounted ticket rate of $12 per person. Train rides are available every twenty minutes, but seats are very limited, so please select a time to reserve your spot on the train.

Savannah Santa Train, one of the largest annual holiday events in the lowcountry, will take place on Sat. December 18, 2021 from 9AM-5PM at Georgia State Railroad Museum, located at 655 Louisville Rd., Savannah, GA 31401.

Savannah Santa Train is hosted each year by Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah Children’s Museum. Tickets are $15 per person for all guests eighteen months and up and pre-registration is required. Parking at Georgia State Railroad Museum is limited.
