Savannah Santa Train, one of the largest annual holiday family events in the Lowcountry, returns on Sat. Dec. 10, 2022, 9AM-5PM @ Georgia State Railroad Museum, 655 Louisville Rd., Savannah.
Festive activities and entertainment include a holiday-themed diesel locomotive train ride experience, Tin Soldier training, crafts and historic children’s games. Enjoy a performance by the Gretchen Greene School of Dance, see and purchase hand-crafted artisan spinning tops made in front of you by the Lowcountry Turners, and celebrate the season with festive holiday dancing with Minick Family Music, and share your Christmas wishes during a visit with Santa Claus.

Old Fort Jackson’s dynamic, living history presentations take place from 10 AM until Noon, and from 1 until 3 PM each day.
Fri. Nov. 25: there will be portrayal of Union and Confederate Soldiers who fought in the Battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina, on Nov. 30th, 1864. These soldiers included the 55th Massachussetts Volunteers, who eventually served at Old Fort Jackson. Experience renowned rifle musket and cannon firings, along with battlefield surgery presentations.
Sat. Nov. 26: there will be a portrayal of Union and Confederate Soldiers and Civilians from Savannah. Hear the story behind the history of Thanksgiving as celebrated in 1864. Experience firing of the mighty 32 Pounder Cannon. Local musicians from Bella Harmony Music, period dancing as well! In the afternoon, participants will portray civilians on the homefront, along with the Savannah Republican Blues, plus the renowned Infantry and Artillery Drill, and Battle Drill with guests.
Lowcountry Celebration Park, one of Hilton Head Island’s newest parks that reflects some of its coastal, historical and environmental attributes, was recognized with an Award of Excellence for its design.
The South Carolina Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects presented the award, which is the highest honor it bestows, at its annual conference held recently in Greenville, South Carolina. Chris Darnell, an Urban Designer with the Town of Hilton Head Island, and Wood and Partners, the firm that designed the park, accepted the award.
Inspired by Shi Jinsong’s motorcycle works, on view in the artist’s exhibition Waiting for a response which we might never get transform holiday icons into whimsical sculptures using polymer clay.
Admission to the workshop: $10. Supplies included. All skill levels welcome. Boxed dinner provided.

This year’s classes will include Wand Making, Potions, Fortune Telling, Defense Against the Dark Arts: Glow in the Dark Fun!, Care of Magical Creatures, Quill Writing, Herbology, Muggle Studies, and Quidditch. Attendees can also take a ride on Georgia State Railroad Museum’s locomotive, the Frogwarts Express, or visit Ingotts Wizarding Bank. Visit the Owlery with Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education and enjoy a musical selection from Esther F. Garrison School for the Arts’ Garrison Voices.
Some community partners will also be leading workshops, including Georgia Reptile Society. The Lowcountry Turners will be creating unique wooden wands. Harry-Potter themed food will be available for purchase.
Please dress in any Halloween or Harry Potter-themed costume of your choice!
Cost of admission: $14 per person for non-members; $12 per person for Coastal Heritage Society members.

The campus-wide open house will be presented by UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
The UGA Aquarium will be open to visitors with no admission fee. Aquarium educators will offer an afternoon full of activities, including a hands-on reptile exhibit, behind-the-scenes peeks of the aquarium, fish feedings and lab studies on the dock behind the facility.
Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s Shellfish Research Lab will provide behind-the-scenes tours of Georgia’s only oyster hatchery and share efforts by researchers to make oyster aquaculture a more durable and sustainable coastal industry.
The UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography’s 92-foot ocean-going Research Vessel Savannah will be open for tours and will exhibit science displays. On the bluff adjacent to the aquarium and along the Jay Wolf Nature Trail, environmental organizations and researchers studying important coastal issues will have tables with a variety of exhibits and hands-on activities for people of all ages.
All activities at Skidaway Marine Science Day are free during this event.
A favorite part of Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Is. is the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Habitat but there is even more to explore around the Museum’s peaceful 68-acre property: marsh boardwalks, kids zone, discovery lab, gardens (including carnivorous plants bog garden with Venus, Sundews, and several species of Pitcher plants, each with their own unique method of trapping insects ), Marsh Tacky horses, replica shell ring, nature trail & more.
Toddler Time @ Sandbox Children’s Museum @ Tanger Outlets in Bluffton SC is for children ages 1-3 and their caregiver. Come and explore a staff-led activity in the area of science, art, or music.
This 30-minute interactive program is aligned to the SC Early Learning Standards. Adults must stay and participate with their child.
