FREE Guided Bird Walk @ Fort Pulaski (for all ages), June 21

It’s time to get your bird on!

Whether your a veteran birder or a newbie, kick of National Park Week with a free bird walk at Fort Pulaski National Monument. On Saturday, June 21 meet with a member of the Savannah chapter of the National Audubon Society to learn more about the wings of spring on Cockspur Island. There’s no charge for the program. Meet at the park entrance at 8 a.m. for a fascinating walk on the natural history side. More info here.

Fort Pulaski National Monument will be partnering with the Ogeechee Audubon Society, the Savannah chapter of the National Audubon Society, for a series of bird walks inside te park. Every 3rd Saturday, at 8:00 AM, members of this organization will lead bird walks in the park. As the seasons change and birds migrate, there will be the opportunity to see new and different birds. Interested birders can meet a member of the Ogeechee Audubon Society near the park’s Entrance Station at 8:00 AM. We will be on the lookout for marsh sparrows, shorebirds, and sedge wrens. At 9:00 AM, the bird walk will move through the park. These special programs will be offered each month at no charge. No reservations are necessary.

Bike Rodeo in Savannah May 10: FREE Bike Rodeo

Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah will host an educational event for children to practice bike skills and learn how to safely navigate roads and traffic. Skidaway’s Bike Rodeo is in partnership with the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.

A bike rodeo is a fun, educational event for children to practice bike skills and learn how to safely navigate roads and traffic. Kids will tackle different stations, each with a different game or challenge. For example, riders might weave between traffic cones to practice balance skills or have a “slow race” where the last one across the finish line wins. Please remember, by Georgia law, all kids under 16 years of age must wear a helmet.

The event is May 10 from 10 am to 1 pm and is free with your $5 parking pass.

Port Royal Sound Maritime Center A state-of-the-art maritime center is scheduled to open in May off S.C. 170 at the site of the former Lemon Island Marina near Beaufort, Bluffton & Hilton Head Is. S.C. (and a roughly 45 minute to an hour drive from Savannah).

The Port Royal Sound Maritime Center will feature touch-screen exhibits, classrooms, hands-on learning spaces and other areas where everyone can learn and celebrate the uniqueness of the Port Royal Sound and have diverse and fun opportunities to experience and connect with the Port Royal Sound area.

Picture 8-foot-wide jaws of a megalodon shark in the reception area; exhibits of suspended models of a tiger shark, a loggerhead sea turtle, bottleneck dolphin & cownose rays; a 2,400-gallon tank with cobia, red drum & small sharks;  a shallow tank with fish & rays for visitors to touch; a moon-and-tides exhibit featuring interactive displays explaining Port Royal Sound’s large tides; a sounds exhibit that will allow visitors to listen to the songs of dolphins & fish picked up by a submerged microphone near the center – according to the Island Packet.

Hike to Battery Wimberly

Civil War History Event: Join Wormsloe’s Interpretive Rangers as they lead an educational hike to the earthworks of Battery Wimberly. War of Jenkins’ Ear

Wormsloe will commemorate Georgia’s role in the 1739-1748 war between Britain and Spain. This intensive week-long program focuses on black-and-white and digital photography, as well as the basic functions of 35mm manual cameras. While instructors emphasize the advancements of digital media and Photoshop, they also cover conventional methods of film photography, including pinhole cameras, to supplement the experience. Students use both manual and digital cameras. Inspired by the work of world-famous photographer Helen Levitt — now on exhibit at the Jepson Center — campers participate in on-location shoots in the historic district and more! The camp culminates with a reception and exhibition of the students’ work at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center for the Arts.

Learn basic jewelry-making skills and explore accessory design by transforming outdated technology into wearable art. Students create unique necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even handbags using recycled computer parts, LEDs and electro luminescent wire. The camp culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ work at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center for the Arts.

In this week-long camp, students explore, play, and develop video games while learning computer programming from scratch using Game Maker. Go beyond pencils and crayons and learn to work with simple motors to create moving art and art that makes itself. Explore the fundamentals of line, shape, and color to create exciting contemporary works of art. The camp culminates with a reception and exhibition of the campers’ work at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center for the Arts.

Wednesdays (Open 10-4)

2 PM Story Time (a classic read-aloud program for children of all ages. The books read during each story time will be chosen based on the ages of children participating)

Thursdays (Open 10-4)
11 AM Toddler Art ( program specifically geared to introduce toddler age children to new art-focused experiences that are highly sensory. This program is generally appropriate for ages 2-4.)

Fridays (Open 10-4)
12:30 PM Story Time (a classic read-aloud program for children of all ages. The books read during each story time will be chosen based on the ages of children participating)

Saturdays (Open 10-4)
11 AM: Family Fitness (Brings the whole family together to learn about nutrition, health, and fitness in a fun and engaging way. This program is designed for children and adults to be participating together for maximum FUN and learning)
1 PM: Super Science (This is an experiment based science program that will introduce children to interesting science concepts through REALLY COOL investigations! This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)
2 PM: Awesome Art (This goes beyond crafts to teach about different medias, artists, and techniques in a child friendly way. This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12.)

Sundays (Open 11-4)
1 PM Wild about Reading! (a literacy based program that will include a read-aloud along with book based activities such as crafts, puppets, children’s theater, early reading skills, early writing skills etc. On Sundays, this program is for school age (ages 5-10).
3 PM Wonderful World of Recycling (introduces children to eco-friendly ideas and practices as well as nature-based education. This program is generally appropriate for ages 4-12)

Savannah Children’s Museum is opening in 2 phases. Exploration Station is phase 1 and is a unique 1 acre, 2 level outdoor exhibit area set in the ruins of a Central of Georgia Railroad building.

SCHOOL YEAR HOURS: From August 31st, 2013 until May 31 2014, Savannah Children’s Museum will be open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-4pm on Sundays. Closed Mondays. SCM will be open on most “Holiday Mondays” when Savannah Chatham County Schools are not in session except St. Patrick’s Day March 17 2014. Summer hours start in June.
