Savannah music lessons: Ms. Amy’s School of Music expands to new location, more classes including art

Ms. Amy’s School of Music is excited to announce its new location!

They are now at 2305 Habersham St. in Savannah. This move has allowed more space, more teachers and additional lesson times available.

There are a handful of lesson times available with Ruth Murphy – piano, brass and woodwind. Jay Rudd – guitar, banjo, mandolin, beginner bass and ukulele. Stanley Walls – jazz trumpet.

Reinforce the essentials and add additional tools to the skill set. Artists are given extra room for creativity and are encouraged to keep a sketchbook to review in class.

Available Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, $30, 1 hour
Work towards a cohesive portfolio with a clear focus on unique artistic strengths. Set goals, determine the tactics and learn how to present your best self.

Private Lessons (Ages 3-18), Available Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, $30, 1 hour
Classes are gauged upon skill level and tailored to fit each artist. Students are taught new techniques to enhance and expand their artistic horizons.

Runway in Bloom fashion show to benefit children’s garden @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah

Runway in Bloom Savannah Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens You are invited to “Runway in Bloom” – a fashion show at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, Savannah, on May 29, 2016.

Proceeds help fund the future children’s garden at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens.

Supporters of the children’s garden believe in the importance of teaching our children about our beautiful environment through hands on learning experiences, which will be a vital part of our children’s garden.

The concept,” Runway in Bloom” is to inspire and showcase the creativity of local designers. It will include collections from Savannah College of Art and Design fashion designers, fine retail apparel and small boutiques.

The theme for the show and collections are designs inspired by nature and flowers.

Featured collections will be made from botanicals and flowers found at the gardens designed by Stephanie Tedder and Hayley Larson, the event producer and co-producer of “Runway in Bloom”.

Presented by the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association, Astronomy Day this Sat. May 14 2016 features daytime activities and displays for the entire family at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah.

Held at the Visitor Center, activities and programs include safe solar gazing, displays on astronomy, astronomical equipment and apps, astronomical art and more. This event is free and open to the public. Return later that evening for our springtime ‘Gazing in the Garden’ event, too!

In partnership with the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association, enjoy the out-of-doors night with “space fun” and stargazing.

After the mid-May sun sets at 8:16 pm and the sky darkens, the first-quarter moon becomes more visible and doesn’t set until around midnight. Come to the Event Field for viewing of the waxing crescent moon, constellations and Milky Way Galaxy through various-size telescopes that Association members (or you) bring. The evening wraps up at 10 pm.

Dress for the evening weather, bring a favorite cold or hot beverage, lawn chair/blanket and snack basket (alcohol is prohibited). Be aware that fire ants may be under your blanket or chair on your particular chosen spot on the Event Field.

Savannah Summer Camps 2016: Full-Day Art Camp for ages 6-12

Full Day Summer Camps Savannah Art Summer Art Camp at the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs studio

The City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs is now accepting registrations for its Summer Art Camp which takes place June 6 through July 29 from 9AM – 4:30PM Monday – Friday at Cultural Arts Studios at 9 West Henry St.

The full-day camp will offer children ages 6-12 an introduction to ceramics, fibers, jewelry and painting in age-appropriate group settings.

Camp fees per child per week are $150/$140 city residents (resides within the city limits of Savannah, pays city residential property taxes). Supplies and instructor fees are included and a non-spoiling bag lunch must be provided daily. There will be no camp the week of July 4-8.

Jepson Center
Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Free and open to the public, this annual festival features live performances and hands-on art activities for all ages, celebrating Savannah’s history and Gullah Geechee heritage. The festival begins with an interactive performance by Jamal Toure and other local storytellers, followed by demonstrations by traditional artists throughout the region. Children can experiment with crafts and try their hand at a variety of artmaking projects. A special highlight of the afternoon includes a live concert by reunited members of the Gospelaires, a legendary a cappella vocal group from Pin Point, offering a rare treat to the celebration.

This Free Family Day gives you a chance to glimpse some of these amazing works in the historic Telfair Academy, featuring master artists such as Rembrandt and Whistler. Sensory Soft Sundays for children with special needs

Savannah Children’s Museum will once again offer Sensory Soft Sunday on select Sundays throughout the year. Museum doors open early from 9AM- 11AM to families who have children with special needs or autism. Sensory Soft Sunday allows these families to make local connections and explore the SCM space without a crowd.

Savannah Scottish Games 2016Celebrate Scottish culture at the 40th Annual Scottish Games in Savannah.

Savannah Scottish Games will be Sat. May 7, 2016, 9AM-4:30PM at Bethesda Academy on historic Bynuh’s Field and will feature Scottish arts, entertainment & traditional Scottish ale and food. This year’s event includes entertainment by Stewart & Winfield and The Accomplices.

The games feature traditional Scottish dance performances by Highland dancers, traditional heavy athletic events like the Caber Toss and Hammer Throw, Border Collie skill demonstrations, and a wide variety of Celtic art available for purchase.

Over 20 Scottish Clans from throughout the country will be represented during the event, and attendees will also have the opportunity to discover their own Scottish and Celtic connections at the genealogy tent.

Tickets

$10 general admission, $5 with student or military ID, and free for children 10 and under.

Telfair Academy Guild presents the inaugural Telfair in Bloom, a festival of art and flowers! Museum curators will choose paintings, sculptures, and works of decorative art from the permanent collection. Designers will interpret the art by creating floral arrangements that will remain on display during the entire four-day event, which includes an opening party, a lecture by a nationally-recognized speaker followed by a luncheon , plus additional lectures, demonstrations, and a children’s workshop.

Armstrong State University and the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs present the 2016 Savannah Asian Cultural Festival on April 15th and 16th.

All events will take place at Armstrong’s campus at 11935 Abercorn St. in Savannah, 31419.

The 21st Annual Savannah Asian Cultural Festival will bring the continent of Asia to coastal Georgia, celebrate the rich diversity of the area and feature unique cultures, cuisine, live performances and more.

Friday, April 15

7:30 p.m. ♦ Armstrong Fine Arts Auditorium

20th Anniversary Celebration of Asian cultural arts featuring live music and dance from seven Asian countries

This special 20th anniversary event will be opened by Linda Bleicken, President of Armstrong State University, and by dignitaries from the City of Savannah’s government officials and staff from the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

The evening indoor performance on the Fine Arts Auditorium Stage will showcase Asia dances, martial arts and instrumental and vocal music with each performer dressed in traditional clothing from their home country.   In additional to using local performers of Asian heritage from China, India, The Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, we are excited to showcase the beautiful Chinese dances by Kaidi Li from New York City, Korean dancers with exotic costumes, and traditional Chinese music with the Erhu, an native instrument somewhat related to the violin. Another highlight will be performances by the very popular Taiko Japanese Drummers who based based in Tampa, Florida.  Closing out the performance will be the very popular Dragon dancers in Vietnamese style.

Registration is open for The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Session 3 Visual Arts Classes & Workshops.

Class registrations are due at noon, Thurs. April 14.
Workshop registrations due at noon the Thurs. before the workshop.

Day & evening sessions are offered for children, teens & adults in all skill levels. Sessions begin April 18 & run through May 13 2016.

Classes are @ the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, 9 W. Henry St. in Savannah.

In Island Grocery where everything is child-sized (even the grocery carts), children can explore an environment that mimics the real thing. Shelves will be filled with play food products that range from lemons to ketchup to cereal. Follow the food chain! The active process of shopping for food challenges young learners to develop & apply math skills including sorting, classifying, calculations & the use of money, as well as concepts related to health & nutrition.
