The Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus Department of Art is proud to host An Artistic Discovery, the United States Congressional High School Art Exhibition for Georgia’s First Congressional District in the Armstrong Fine Arts Gallery.

Works submitted for the exhibition are eligible for a number of cash awards, as well as the prestigious US District Congressional Award.

The Congressional Art Competition is held annually and is a unique opportunity in which a U.S. Congressman or Congresswoman is able to showcase the artistic talents of high school students within his/her district, thereby acknowledging the nation’s gifted young artists. The winning entries from each district are prominently displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington, D.C. The Cannon Tunnel connects the Cannon House Office Building with the U.S. Capitol and is traveled on a daily basis by congressmen, as well as their staff members.

This year’s exhibition will be on display at the Armstrong Fine Arts Gallery from Feb. 18 through March 3, 2019. The awards ceremony and closing reception is scheduled for Sun. March 3, beginning at 2PM. The winning Congressional work will represent the 1st Congressional district in an exhibition in Washington, D.C. for one year.

All high schools and home school students in Georgia’s 1st United States Congressional District are eligible to submit up to 14 student works per art teacher or two works per student in home schools. Each student is allowed no more than two entries. If a school has more than one art teacher, each art teacher may submit up to 14 works.

Entries will be submitted digitally and juried without delivering the actual work to the university gallery. The art teacher(s) from schools wishing to participate and parents of homeschool students will submit works online.

The deadline for entries is Tues. Jan. 22, 2019 at 11:59PM.

Jurying will take place during the week and notification of works accepted will be given to teachers or homeschool parents by email.

Savannah Book Festival 2019 children’s event featuring bestselling author Kwame Alexander & more

Saturday, November 24th, 2018

SBF Children's event 2019 kwame alexander live oak public library book children's

As you know, the beloved free, fall Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Forsyth Park was cancelled this year after the City of Savannah revised their festival grant funding.

But Live Oak Public Libraries and Savannah Book Festival will present an alternative children’s event at the 2019 Savannah Book Festival on Sun. Feb. 17 at 1PM in Reynolds Square. The SBF Children’s Tent, which will feature author appearances, activities and book-signings, will be sponsored by Live Oak Public Libraries and Live Oak Public Libraries Foundation.

While SouthernMamas.com appreciates this children’s tent with author visits, we hope the original, full, one-day Savannah Children’s Book Festival will return to Forsyth Park in Fall 2019.

“We are excited to host the SBF Children’s Tent this year,” said Savannah Book Festival Board President Beau Anders. “We strongly believe in the importance of the event for the library and literacy in our community.” Anders said that SBF was looking forward to collaborating with LOPL in February as both organizations are committed to promoting reading for all ages in the community.

“It is with great excitement that Live Oak Public Libraries, with the generous support of the Library Foundation, will be partnering with the Savannah Book Festival to incorporate a children’s event in February of 2019,” stated Charlotte Welch, Chair, Regional Board of Library Trustees. “The event will continue the Library’s goal of promoting children’s literacy in our communities and we look forward to our joint venture with this popular and educational festival.”

Featured authors scheduled to appear in the SBF Children’s Tent are:

Junior Ranger programs @ Fort Pulaski National Monument, Savannah

Junior Ranger programs at National Parks in Savannah, CharlestonYour kids can become a Junior Ranger

Take advantage of the fact that we live within a day’s drive of multiple national parks & monuments & have your kids become a junior ranger at one or many of these sites.

When you take kids to tour national parks, you never know how much they are getting out of the visit. Especially for those of us moms who aren’t exactly history experts.

Which is why you need to pick up the Junior Ranger booklets at the visitor centers of national parks you visit. The Junior Ranger program kids engage more during the visits.

Junior Ranger booklets have activities about the national parks for ages 5-12. Junior ranger books are free to any visitor and usually are available at the visitors’ centers. Often, similar programs with more advanced activities are also available for older kids. Just ask at the site’s visitor center.

While doing the activities, children enjoy earning a badge and a certificate.
