Bring the kids to the FREE 2014 Flannery O’Connor Parade & Street Fair for quirky family-friendly fun Sunday, March 30

This lively annual celebration of acclaimed author and Savannah native Flannery O’Connor’s birthday will offer family-friendly fun, live music and more. Attendees are invited to walk in the parade and to bring handmade signs and un-amplified musical instruments. Live music by Andrew Hartzel, Anna Chandler and other ambling minstrels. Costumes inspired by Flannery O’Connor characters, settings or the author’s life are optional.

The parade is free and open to the public.

WHEN:
Sunday, March 30, 2014
1-4 p.m. – Bring your own picnic and enjoy live music, games and contests. Get your photo or family portrait taken with a poet dressed like a gorilla, make your own parade sign with art materials donated by Blick and meet live chickens. Shop for vintage items, funky accouterments and parade accessories from local vendors including Civvies.
3 p.m. – Parade starts in Lafayette Square; Enjoy birthday cake in Lafayette Square immediately following the parade.

ABOUT FLANNERY O’CONNOR:
Flannery O’Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 25, 1925 and is the author of the acclaimed novels Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away, as well as 32 short stories and numerous essays. Perhaps best known as a pioneering Southern gothic author who often wrote about morally flawed characters, O’Connor remains an important voice in American literature. She lived in Savannah until 1938 and drew inspiration from her childhood experiences in Georgia’s First City until her death from lupus in Milledgeville, Georgia on August 3, 1964. She received the National Book Award for Fiction posthumously in 1972 for The Collected Stories of Flannery O’Connor.
