World Breastfeeding Month: How working moms can successfully breastfeed

Tuesday, August 11th, 2015

Memorial Health lactation services breastfeedingReturning to work is a major factor in derailing many moms’ breastfeeding plans. The good news is that women and their employers can take some simple steps to support successful breastfeeding and, ultimately, healthier babies.

Wendy Nichols Memorial Health Savannah lactation consultant

Wendy Nichols, R.N., a board-certified lactation consultant

Wendy Nichols, R.N., a board-certified lactation consultant at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, says a robust milk supply that can last must be well established early on. It should start during the first 60 minutes after birth.

A few weeks before returning to work, mothers may begin expressing some extra milk every day and freezing it. Milk stored in containers designed for breast milk can be frozen for at least three months in a refrigerator freezer, and twice that long in a deep freeze.

Finally, the Affordable Care Act requires employers to provide “reasonable break time” for an employee to express breast milk, as well as a private location (other than a bathroom) for milk expression.

Bravo’s ‘Odd Mom Out’ about Momzilla life in Manhattan

Monday, June 8th, 2015

parents july 2015 issue Odd Mom Out Bravo On Mon. June 8, Bravo’s new scripted-series Odd Mom Out, which chronicles Momzilla life on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, debuts at 10PM ET. In the July issue of Parents magazine, Parents magazine chats with the show’s star, creator and mother-of-three, Jill Kargman, who tells us in her own words what it’s like to be the odd mom out.

What is a Momzilla?
A Momzilla is someone who channels all of her type-A ambition and energy into her child. I do believe there’s a Newtonian law of energy where all of your drive for your career abruptly gets funneled into the fetus.
.
Your character, Jill Weber, also has three children. Is she based on your own experience?
When I had Sadie, I had no friends in New York who were parents and I felt really lonely. The challenges of that period of my life have been retooled for this show. A lot of moms I speak to say, “Enjoy this time while it lasts because it flies by.” And I want to smash them in the head because it was really hard.

Have you ever felt like the odd mom out?
At a ballet class when my oldest was 2, I told her to sit down “Indian style.” These four perfect moms gasped and glared at me. One said, “You can’t say that. It’s ‘crisscross applesauce’ now.” I ran into the bathroom and burst into tears because I felt like I was doing it all wrong.

What’s your advice to other parents who feel this way?
Fly your freak flag and know there are others like you. Even people you perceive to be the perfect mothers, who have it all together, sometimes feel like the odd mom out too.

Savannah’s gun violence epidemic is a public health threat

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Savannah's Gun Violence Crime Problem Public Health Issue

(UPDATE: A 12-year-old Savannah boy named Keith Passmore was shot dead Saturday night Nov. 22. That means three children were shot in three different shootings in Savannah in less than one week.)

This week, two different shootings of Savannah children serve as horrific reminders of this city’s gun violence epidemic.

Kiaja Smalls, 2, was shot dead Tuesday night while sleeping in her Savannah Southside apartment.  The shots were fired from outside the apartment.

On Thursday, a Savannah 6-year-old girl was shot during a domestic dispute. She suffered non-fatal injuries.

Imagine if these cases involved another consumer product other than guns.

Imagine if Kiaja died because of a malfunction in a crib or if she swallowed a laundry detergent pod. Then we would hear from various health and public safety advocates about how to prevent such deaths along with tips about keeping our children safe.

However when it comes to gun violence as a public health issue – we rarely hear from the medical community about how to prevent gun violence.

Even though there are about about 11,000 homicides, 19,000 suicides and more than 2,000 fatal accidents involving guns every year nationwide.  That’s an average of 88 gun deaths per day.

We’d love to see Savannah physicians become more active in counseling patients and the public about firearm safety and working to reduce injuries and deaths from firearms, in the same way that they work to reduce injuries and deaths from poisonings, smoking, motor vehicle traffic accidents, incorrectly installed car seats etc.

For example, how many pediatricians regularly tell parents that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the safest home for children is one without guns?

Health experts – we would love to talk to you about Savannah’s gun violence epidemic and to get your input about what we as parents can do to prevent these shootings from becoming the new normal. Please contact us at anne@southernmamas.com

Funeral donations
Donations are being accepted for the funeral expenses for Kiaja Smalls, 2, who was shot and killed Tuesday night inside a Savannah apartment. The family says donations will be accepted at any local Wells Fargo Bank. A gofundme page has also been set up for the family: http://www.gofundme.com/hid3wk

Unidentified respiratory virus likely to hit kids nationwide has already hit Georgia

Monday, September 8th, 2014

Spread the word: Handwashing. Handwashing. Handwashing. The way to possibly prevent your kids from getting this scary virus.

This below is from ABC News.

A respiratory illness that has already sickened more than a thousand children in 10 states is likely to become a nationwide problem, doctors say.

The disease hasn’t been officially identified but officials suspect a rare respiratory virus called human enterovirus 68.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus is related to the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold.

According to Mark Pallansch, director of the Division of Viral Diseases at the CDC, similar cases to the ones in Colorado have been cropping up across the U.S. At least 10 states — Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Georgia — have reported suspected outbreaks of human enterovirus 68 and requested CDC support.
