Moms Make Things Happen: Join Team in Training in Savannah for 50% off registration fee

Team in Training Savannah Publix race Thinking about signing up for Team In Training in Savannah? Here is what mom, Danielle, has to say about her experience.

“I first signed up with Team In Training for motivation and support to train for my first marathon. My brother is a lymphoma survivor and I wanted to do something to honor him. As luck would have it, just a couple months into training, I discovered I was pregnant! So, I took a little over a year off and signed up again when Jordy was just five months old. I loved being part of a team – everyone was so supportive regardless of fitness ability. Our coach offered much needed motivation and advice as I spent five months training for a full marathon. I was so proud to wear my purple Team in Training shirt on race day!

Fast forward another year and I had the opportunity to co-coach the Moms In Training program. Leading this group of moms and first time runners helped hold me accountable to waking up early every Saturday morning and hitting the pavement. A bonus was that my baby girl, Jordy, could train with me. It was exciting when she rode in the stroller for 5 miles and just smiled and repeated “go team!”

Team In Training is accepting applications now for the perfect Moms or Girlfriends event – the Publix Savannah Women’s Half Marathon on March 28 2015.  (FREE race registration for Team in Training Savannah)  Train to walk or run a half marathon or 5K while helping to raise funds to find a cure for blood cancers.

Savannah’s gun violence epidemic is a public health threat

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Savannah's Gun Violence Crime Problem Public Health Issue

(UPDATE: A 12-year-old Savannah boy named Keith Passmore was shot dead Saturday night Nov. 22. That means three children were shot in three different shootings in Savannah in less than one week.)

This week, two different shootings of Savannah children serve as horrific reminders of this city’s gun violence epidemic.

Kiaja Smalls, 2, was shot dead Tuesday night while sleeping in her Savannah Southside apartment.  The shots were fired from outside the apartment.

On Thursday, a Savannah 6-year-old girl was shot during a domestic dispute. She suffered non-fatal injuries.

Imagine if these cases involved another consumer product other than guns.

Imagine if Kiaja died because of a malfunction in a crib or if she swallowed a laundry detergent pod. Then we would hear from various health and public safety advocates about how to prevent such deaths along with tips about keeping our children safe.

However when it comes to gun violence as a public health issue – we rarely hear from the medical community about how to prevent gun violence.

Even though there are about about 11,000 homicides, 19,000 suicides and more than 2,000 fatal accidents involving guns every year nationwide.  That’s an average of 88 gun deaths per day.

We’d love to see Savannah physicians become more active in counseling patients and the public about firearm safety and working to reduce injuries and deaths from firearms, in the same way that they work to reduce injuries and deaths from poisonings, smoking, motor vehicle traffic accidents, incorrectly installed car seats etc.

For example, how many pediatricians regularly tell parents that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the safest home for children is one without guns?

Health experts – we would love to talk to you about Savannah’s gun violence epidemic and to get your input about what we as parents can do to prevent these shootings from becoming the new normal. Please contact us at anne@southernmamas.com

Funeral donations
Donations are being accepted for the funeral expenses for Kiaja Smalls, 2, who was shot and killed Tuesday night inside a Savannah apartment. The family says donations will be accepted at any local Wells Fargo Bank. A gofundme page has also been set up for the family: http://www.gofundme.com/hid3wk

Memorial’s Rehab Services Moving to New Pooler Location; Therapist Offers Tips for Healthy Infant Development

Sunday, October 12th, 2014

Pediatric Rehab outpatient therapy services Memorial’s Rehab Services Moving to New Pooler Location

The Rehabilitation Institute at Memorial University Medical Center is moving its Pooler outpatient office to the Mulberry office park.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 27, therapists will see adult and pediatric patients at 101 West Mulberry Drive, Suite 210. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is 912-273-1000.

Therapist Offers Tips for Healthy Infant Development

Two of the conditions treated at The Rehabilitation Institute are torticollis and plagiocephaly, which affect some infants before or shortly after birth.

Torticollis is caused by a tight neck muscle and results in the baby’s head tilting to one side. It may occur before birth, although its cause is unknown. Left untreated, torticollis can cause developmental delays in rolling, sitting up and walking.

Plagiocephaly, which is often present with torticollis, is a flattening along the back of the head causing asymmetry. It can cause an uneven facial shape and uneven ear position.

Studies have shown that positioning and exercise started within the first three months result in excellent outcomes. Consult your pediatrician if you have concerns. Early referral to a physical therapist for evaluation may prevent a child from having to attend prolonged therapy and may prevent the need for a cranial molding helmet.

If you suspect your baby may have symptoms of these conditions, try these suggestions from Sherry Mitchell, lead pediatric physical therapist at The Rehabilitation Institute:

Give your baby tummy time when she is awake.

Position the crib, swing or bouncer so that your baby turns his head toward the tight side.

Position your baby on her side for play and alternate sides.

Alternate sides when nursing or bottle feeding to encourage head turning.

Use only approved positioning devices in the carseat to keep the head midline.

For more information on pediatric or adult rehabilitation services, call 912-350-7128 or visit rehabinstitute.memorialhealth.com.

FREE breast health awareness seminar on 3D mammography technology, Oct. 21

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

SouthCoast Health Richmond Hill SouthCoast Health, the Savannah-based medical organization formerly known as SouthCoast Medical Group, will host a community breast health awareness seminar in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The free event, held at the practice’s Richmond Hill medical campus (89 Interchange Drive), will include a discussion on the latest advancements in 3D mammography technology. SouthCoast Health is one of the first practices in Georgia to offer this innovative service.

Family medicine specialist, Dr. Regina Dandy, obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Neil Odom, and family nurse practitioner, Nanci Ahearn, will be available to answer questions and provide health and wellness information for women of all ages during the seminar. Light refreshments will also be served.

3D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis, has become the new standard in breast cancer screenings. This technique involves the digital production of a 3D image of the breast tissue, which allows physicians to examine the area in fine detail without the confusion of overlapping tissue. Recent studies have shown that the use of this technology has led to a 41 percent increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers, a 29 percent increase in the detection of all breast cancers, and a 15 percent decrease in the number of false positive callbacks.

For more information about the breast health awareness seminar, call (912) 527-5301 or visit www.southcoast-health.com.

Unidentified respiratory virus likely to hit kids nationwide has already hit Georgia

Monday, September 8th, 2014

Spread the word: Handwashing. Handwashing. Handwashing. The way to possibly prevent your kids from getting this scary virus.

This below is from ABC News.

A respiratory illness that has already sickened more than a thousand children in 10 states is likely to become a nationwide problem, doctors say.

The disease hasn’t been officially identified but officials suspect a rare respiratory virus called human enterovirus 68.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus is related to the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold.

According to Mark Pallansch, director of the Division of Viral Diseases at the CDC, similar cases to the ones in Colorado have been cropping up across the U.S. At least 10 states — Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Georgia — have reported suspected outbreaks of human enterovirus 68 and requested CDC support.
