Returning to work is a major factor in derailing many moms’ breastfeeding plans. The good news is that women and their employers can take some simple steps to support successful breastfeeding and, ultimately, healthier babies.

Wendy Nichols, R.N., a board-certified lactation consultant at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, says a robust milk supply that can last must be well established early on. It should start during the first 60 minutes after birth.

A few weeks before returning to work, mothers may begin expressing some extra milk every day and freezing it. Milk stored in containers designed for breast milk can be frozen for at least three months in a refrigerator freezer, and twice that long in a deep freeze.

Finally, the Affordable Care Act requires employers to provide “reasonable break time” for an employee to express breast milk, as well as a private location (other than a bathroom) for milk expression.

Public health officials also remind parents that seventh graders are required to have the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) and meningococcal (meningitis) vaccines prior to entering school. Children born on or after January 1, 2002 who are attending seventh grade and new entrants into Georgia schools in grades 8 through 12 must have received one dose of Tdap vaccine and one dose of meningococcal vaccine. (“New entrant” means any child entering any school in Georgia for the first time or entering after having been absent from a Georgia school for more than 12 months or one school year).

Vaccines are safe and effective and help protect children and adults from a host of different diseases including measles, polio, and chickenpox. When students stay healthy they spend more days in school and less time sick at home. In addition, children who are immunized also help prevent the spread of diseases to infants who are too young to get vaccinated and others who may not be able to receive certain vaccines for medical reasons. Vaccinations help children develop immunity to diseases without actually have to suffer through getting the disease.

You’re invited to take part in Stroller Strong Mom’s of Savannah’s Get Fit Challenge.

The Get Fit Challenge is a 10 week program that starts the week of January 19th and ends the week of March 30th.

It will include both a fitness assessment (during class time) and body composition assessment (before or after class) at the start and end of the program. The fitness assessment will include five different exercises that will be counted/timed. The body composition assessment will use a handheld bodyfat monitor.
You will receive points in the following ways:
-Class attendance
-Improvement in fitness assessment
-Improvement in body composition assessment
-How well you follow your nutrition goal

The Get Fit Challenge will happen during Stroller Strong Moms’ regular class days and times. The body composition testing will occur before or after class on those days.

Points will be tallied throughout the program and participants with the most points at the end of the 10 weeks will receive gift card prizes.  Participants will be divided into two groups based on the initial assessment results. This will make it fair across the board and encourage everyone to compete against others who are at their same fitness level.
You will take a before/after picture at class at the start and end of the program so you can see how much the hard work payed off!

You have to be a member of SSM in order to participate in the Get Fit Challenge. But don’t worry, it’s easy to become a member. 6:00-6:15pm – Mindful awareness practice of placing shoes and bags away/ bathroom break. Music Activity with Yoga Postures – Joggin’ Through the Jungle all ages
6:15-7:00pm- 3- 6 yrs. Kidding Around Yoga Class/ 7-12yrs- Arts and Crafts (Gift Making)
7:00-7:15pm- Toe-ga – a game where you pick up pom poms with your toes and place on your mat all ages
7:15-8:00pm 7-12yrs Kidding Around Yoga Class/ 3-6yrs Arts and Crafts (Gift Making)
8:00-8:15pm Healthy Snack and Drink- Teaching kids about FRESH WHOLE FOODS that come from the ground all ages
8:15-8:45pm- Story time – a performance of Johnny Appleseed presented by Chase Anderson all ages. Expresses the Gift of Giving
8:45-9:00pm – Clean up area and get ready for pick up. Practice of the second limb of yoga known as Niyamas/ Observances – Saucha means Cleanliness.
Patanjali does not say we should stop our poor habits; instead we should practice the Eight Limbs of Yoga. When we stop putting effort into “breaking bad habits” and start practicing/living the Eight Limbs, our bad habits simply drop away from us.
