Since this will be my first Christmas in Savannah, I am excited to start the tradition of cooking my OWN holiday dinner :) I also hope to make it out to the beach to say I was on the beach for Christmas :)

    2. Nikki Smith says:

OOOOh . . . our favorite tradition is riding around Savannah and looking at lights:) Your site has helped a lot. Taking along hot Krispy Kremes is an added bonus!!

    3. Thena says:

Riding around as a family looking at Christmas Lights. Also making Christmas cookies with the kids.

    4. Jolene Byrne says:

We didn’t make a big deal about Christmas until we had our son. Now, I’m getting our first tree (my first ever!). I hope to add a few special ornaments each year and hang them together as our new tradition.

    5. Kari Dollar says:

Every year we get a photo ornament for each of our children. On the back of the ornament we write them a little letter to remind them of special times from the previous year.

    6. Vanessa says:

My two boys and I enjoy (look forward to)decorating the house, putting up the Christmas Tree, making ginger bread houses as a classroom activity, baking and decorating cookies for Santa!

Wishing everyone a Happy and Safe Holiday!

    7. Jennifer says:

My husband and I have purchased an ornament on (almost) every trip we’ve taken - it’s so fun to put up the tree and remember our travels. We’ll continue this with our son.

    8. Kim G. says:

We have cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning as we open our gifts!

    12. Kelley S says:

We enjoy watching the Polar Express and sipping hot chocolate. I also save all of the Holiday photo cards that I receive every year. It’s fun to look back and see how much people have changed or grown over the years.

    13. mydan says:

      A new family tradition:

With deployments dominating our lives in recent years, we are now starting a new family tradition. During the years that my husband is absent, like this one, when he gets his R&R we will celebrate ALL holidays in ONE single day, a holiday marathon if you will. This is something we think the kids will benefit from more than just memories via web cam.

I will start a turkey bright and early in the morning, hide Easter eggs, and have a small tree up and gifts under it waiting for the family to wake. We will host a 4th of July BBQ no matter what month it is and I will notify a couple neighbors not to get alarmed and call the MP’s when they see a family in masks walking up to their door for Halloween.

This will be great fun, and with a bit of luck, have lasting memories that will outweigh any bad.

    14. Bree says:

Our favorite tradition is having the kids open new PJs on Christmas Eve!

    15. Tania says:

My fav tradition is buying my boys a new ornament every year….I also buy a duplicate that I am putting away for them so that when the leave the house (Sniff) they can take them with them!

    16. Jennifer says:

Before we got married, my husband declared he would never spend Christmas anywhere but in Savannah in our own house. My family has always lived far away from relatives and always traveled for the holidays. What a wonderful thing to be at home for Christmas! This year, we bought an Elf on the Shelf- I think “Jolly” will become a much loved and enduring tradition at our house!

    17. Ginger says:

My favorite holiday tradition started when I was a little girl and we have continued it for my children. Every Christmas Eve, we go to the service at church. Then it’s time to open presents at the grandparents house. It is so much fun to see all of the grandchildren ripping through the paper to get inside the box! Sometimes, the adults are just as bad!

    18. Melissa T says:

We always buy new pj’s for my girls that they open on Christmas Eve. They put them on and we fix snacks and watch the Christmas Story! Then we put out cookies and a Coke for Santa and head to bed!

    19. Tiffany says:

Every year my daughter and I make photo ornaments for the grandparents and family memebers we miss being stationed so far away: ) It lets my daughter know that “home-made” gifts are better then all the toys r us toys santa will bring : ) And we just love to put up ours and see the changes from year to year : ) Happy Holidays to everyone!!

    20. Holly says:

Our favorite Christmas tradition is to decorate the tree together as a family and let my son put the star on top at the end.

    21. Nikki says:

Our favorite holiday tradition is gumbo for dinner Christmas Eve!

    22. sarah Burford says:

Our favorite Christmas tradition is camping out underneath the christmas tree. We put blankets on the floor around the chrismas tree, rent lots of christmas movies, have an assortment of snacks and fall asleep underneath the tree.

    23. alyson says:

We love riding around looking at the holiday lights:)

    24. Jackie Wetmore says:

We love family traditions and have quite a few, but on Christmas Eve, we go to the candlelight service at church and then out for a nice dinner with the whole family. Afterward we drive around looking at Christmas lights until the kids are getting sleepy. When we get home, they open one gift of new pjs before leaving cookies and milk for Santa and reading “The Night Before Christmas” and falling into bed.

    25. Denise says:

We love spending Christmas Eve with my parents, sibling and their families and then enjoying Christmas morning at our home. We read the Christmas story, open gifts and enjoy the morning while dinner is cooking. If any of our family wants to see us that day they are welcome to join us but we stay in. The day after Christmas we head out to visit the rest of the family.

    26. Kelly Jervis says:

My favorite tradition is going to Sonic and getting an ice cream to eat while we cruise around and enjoy the Christmas lights!

    27. Katherine Durkin says:

A few years ago, we had too many family illnesses going on to try to make a huge family meal. So we ordered delivery from a Chinese restaurant that was open on Christmas Day. We all got what we wanted. And we had more time to simply sit and enjoy each other and the holiday while we let someone else do the cooking. We probably won’t do it every year. But it was definitely a great streak for 3 years!

    28. Lea Lanier says:

Our tradition is making big pot of crab stew and oyster stew to have for Christmas Eve dinner. Lots of extended family comes and we have some delicious desserts too!

    29. Laura says:

My favorite tradition is singing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus and have cupcakes or a cake. And we read about the true meaning of Christmas from the Bible - the account of Jesus’ birth.

    30. Dawn Castro says:

We seem to have quite a few different Christmas traditions…buying a new ornament for each of us that somehow related to our year, having Christmas movie nights with hot chocolate & popcorn, riding all over looking at lights, taking our own family photo to use for our Christmas cards, etc. I have to say that my favorite is making Christmas candy wreaths. My mom was the one to start it and my kids grew up helping her with them. Now that she is gone they have wanted to carry on the tradition. It seems to be their favorite too because they are always asking when we are going to do it and everyone takes part in doing it. My kids range in age from 4 to 16 years old and they all enjoy it. Since there is different steps in making it we usually each choose what part we will have in making it. We use them for gifts and my 4 year old was so excited about giving one to his Pre K class.

    31. Debbie Barrett says:

We love to go to the Columbia Zoo every Christmas to see the wonderful night light display. We all have such a wonderful time!

    32. Alison A. says:

My favorite traditions include going to the Christmas eve service at church with my family, yummy Christmas dinner after opening presents, new Christmas pajamas each year, and driving around to look at Christmas lights.

    33. Audrey says:

We have a special cookie plate and a special milk mug for Santa. It’s fun to take them out each year and bake cookies for Santa. We watch the Nutcracker while we’re baking and making sweets!

    34. Alicia Gibbs says:

Every year my grandparents have one of the largest displays in the county and we love taking our daughter to see it.
Christmas traditions are we draw names for our extended family on my mother and father’s sides to exchange presents every year. Parties are christmas eve lunch with my dad’s side, christmas eve night with my moms family. Christmas morning with just our daughter and presents from Santa. Then it’s christmas lunch and present exchanging with my husbands immediate family. Finally it all comes to an end with a party christmas night at my parents house with just my immediate family. It’s always a great end with my moms crab stew and homemade punch!

    35. Susan Shami says:

On Christmas Eve, we bake and decorate a cake together. On Christmas Day, we put candles in it, light them, sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus, and let all the children blow out the candles. It’s a nice way to remember that we are really celebrating a birthday.

    36. Angel Foley says:

We start by hanging our Christmas lights on the house outside and decorate the inside of our home on the weekend after Thanksgiving. We then drive around each weekend around surrounding neighborhoods to look at the lights that go up. It is always nice to see the changes in each week as more folks hang lights and get in the Christmas spirit. Then on Christmas Eve we always take that last ride around to see the lights. When we get home we each get to open one gift from a family member and then it is off to bed for our two girls. We always remember the reason for the Season.

    37. Michelle Jones says:

Every year we go “exploring” to find the best Christmas lights. With the holiday music on the radio and trying to find the best lights ever, we really enjoy quality family time together.

    38. Julie says:

Something that I hope will turn into a tradition: my husband put the lights on the Christmas tree while the rest of the family was still sleeping. When our 5yo awoke and saw the tree, he said it was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen and grabbed our hands and started singing ‘Jingle Bells’.

    39. Ginger Heidel says:

So many great traditions - how do I choose? One of my favorites is the Christmas Eve service at First Baptist Savannah. At the end of the service we all sing carols on the steps facing Chippewa Square.

    40. Kelly says:

Christmas is our favorite holiday at our house! We do not have a chimney for Santa so we have a special magic santa key that we hang next to the front door. On Christmas Eve we lay it on the front door step for Santa to come in. My 2 1/2 year old son is obscessed with this key! He asks every night before bedtime if he should put the key out for Santa “just in case”. :-)

    41. Amber says:

My favorite tradition of ours is our Christmas Day beach trip! We always drive out to Tybee, look for shells and build a “sandman” at some point on Christmas Day!

    42. Stephanie Froncak says:

We have a lot of Christmas traditions. On Christmas eve we make sugar cookies and decorate them for santa, then we watch christmas movies, hang our stockings, open a present of new pjs and my favorite is read Twas the night before Christmas. For as far back as I can remember my grandfather would gather all the children together and read the story to us. We now live far away from my family but I still gather my children around right before bed and read the book. I say the whole story without even looking at the pages.

    43. tegan searle says:

My little man is only 19 months, so some Christmas traditions are lost on him (why DON’T we put the ornaments on the tree just to rip them down and put them in the wagon???). But the lights around the house are a delight to him, so I know we can look forward to many years of decorating and admiring how a few strings of bulbs make the whole world magical.

    44. Jaclyn Wallace says:

Jaclyn Wallace: I lock a room and decorate it for the kids. They believe the angels and Christ child decorate it and leave them gifts. They go in on Christmas Eve.

    45. Ashley says:

Every year my husband and I buy each other an ornament for the tree and we buy one for our girls together. We have started this year taking the girls around in their pjs looking at Christmas lights while they drink their chocolate milk. Next year, we are looking forward to starting the tradition of Elf on a Shelf.

    46. TAMARA CORDEO says:

My kids and I love to decorate the christmas tree. And bake cookies for Christmas… this year we will be sending some over seas to Afghanistan where my brother is stationed… the kids want to send their uncle a little bit of Christmas. Also every year we HAVE to get a picture taken with Santa!

    47. Laura says:

I will leave a “Santa” toy in my kids bed. So they will have a nice surprise when they wake up Christmas morning.

    48. Jennifer says:

We all get Christmas pajamas to open on Christmas eve. We wear them to bed & the pictures are so cute over the years with everyone matching on Christmas morning.

    49. Lisa says:

We go to a Christmas Eve service and have a big dinner on Christmas together. We also do a special ornament for our two girls that are relevant to the past year. This is our favorite holiday! We also have a birthday cake for Jesus’ birthday.

    50. Heather says:

We love to make gift for the grandparents and paint our own gift bags and wrapping paper. It cuts down on costs, and makes gifting more personal than just running out to buy something and tossing it in a store bought bag/ paper.

    51. Sara A. says:

Sitting around the fire, listening to Christmas music, enjoying our new presents and each others company.

    52. Nancy D. says:

Each Christmas morning as a child, my parents would gather my brother and I in the hallway heading towards our living room, closing off the doors so that we couldnt see the Christmas tree or presents. Then, mom and dad would grandly open the doors and we would rush in and see all of the goodies Santa had left for us. It was such an incredible feeling of anticipation and joy!
My husband and I have started the tradition with our own son, and look forward to adding our twins to the mix this Christmas! It’s such an amazing experience to see the wonder in the eyes of your child when they see that Santa has come to see them!
