The yearbook staff included: seniors Stella Bowen, Celia Cerbone, Lauren Hylan, Jonah Hobbie, Carter Kleinpeter, Sarah Koegler, Caroline Kurinij, Lizzie Lank, Kaleb Lofton, Jillian Rachlin, Ava Stillwagon, and Chesley Strain; and juniors Sara Sergi and Richaard Williams.

“I am so proud of this group of students and the many hours they put into producing a memorable
yearbook for the St. Andrew’s community,” said Searcy. “As a team, we reexamined every aspect of the
book with the goal of presenting a fresh perspective for all areas of campus life.”

The award was presented to the St. Andrew’s yearbook program for achieving defined criteria in the

Savannah pediatrician Dr. Kelsey Alexander: Water Safety for Kids

Monday, June 5th, 2023

Savannah Pediatrician Dr. Kelsey Alexander on the leading cause of death in kids ages 1-4: drowning.

Below is a guest post by Savannah pediatrician Dr. Kelsey Alexander @ Coastal Care Partners’ new Concierge Pediatric Clinic

Water Safety for Kids

School’s out, and with the warm, sunny days ahead, boat rides and trips to the beach or pool are likely in your future! As you plan for your family’s summer fun, it’s important to keep water safety in mind.

As the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 years old and the second leading cause of death for children ages 5-14, drowning accidents affect nearly 1,000 children per year, mostly between the months of May and August. So this summer, stay prepared with the below water safety tips!

Start Swim Lessons Early

Swimming is a life-saving skill that we need to teach our children and it is never too early to start. Children can start ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) swim lessons as early as six months old to learn how to float on their backs. Standard classes usually start at 18 months and teach small children how to swim to a pool ledge or short distances. Older children should learn different swim strokes to equip them for situations like fighting currents.

We do not recommend using swim floaties to teach children to swim properly. Floaties hold a child upright, encouraging them to bob up and down instead of swimming horizontally. However, families with multiple children or children that have no fear may need to use swim floaties for certain children. If your child wears swim floaties, make sure they do not take them off the entire time you are in the gated area of the pool and continue to keep them within arm’s reach.

Never Swim Alone

When kids are around water, make sure they are never left alone, including during bath time. Adults should know how to swim themselves and should never be less than an arm’s length away from kids who are not strong swimmers. For older children, make sure they always have a swimming partner. If your child is attending a camp with a pool, ensure the area is fenced and that life jackets will be provided for open water activities. While lifeguards on duty are a wonderful resource, do not rely on lifeguards alone to watch your children.

Know the Signs of Drowning & How to React

It is smart for all parents and kids to know what to do in emergency situations. Teach your children that if another child pulls them under water, even if that child cannot swim, they need to

kick that child off of them and yell for help from an adult. Limit distractions while watching your child swim because drowning is silent as opposed to what you see in the movies where kids make noise and flail their arms. Most start with their head bobbing above water, but their mouth and nose are underwater. We recommend that all parents take a CPR course in the event of an emergency, and we offer 30-minute one-on-one instruction in our office for anyone who is interested. Call 912-598-6312 for more information!

Pool Tips

If you have children or grandchildren that are not strong swimmers, it is incredibly important to install a fence around all four sides of your backyard pool. If one side of the fence is open to the house, it is just as dangerous as not having a fence. The fence should be at least four-feet high and non-climbable with a self-closing, self-locking gate. Until you can install a fence, we recommend installing locks at the top of the door and utilizing door alarms so that children cannot access the pool. When hosting families with children that are not strong swimmers, the pool should be fully enclosed, locked, and/or monitored even if children are not ‘supposed’ to be swimming. If hosting a pool party, consider hiring a lifeguard or designating “Water Watchers” to watch the pool for 15-minute increments, and avoid using large floats in the pool to improve visibility.

Open Water Tips

Open water is unpredictable and susceptible to several dangers like currents, rip tides, limited visibility, depth, and uneven surfaces. If your backyard leads to open water, consider fencing off access. Children should have Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all boat rides and recreational activities on the water. Teach children best practices, like only swimming in designated areas, always entering feet first, and avoiding cold water that can cause shock.

As your family embarks on the summer fun ahead, we hope you will keep these tips in mind. To learn more about water safety, please visit safekids.org, healthychildren.org, and usla.org/page/ripcurrents.

Georgia Could Become Leader in High-Tech Traffic Solutions

Sunday, June 4th, 2023

Below is a paid guest post

Traffic continues to be a growing problem in metropolitan areas worldwide, but in the United States, Georgia leads the way in terms of traffic issues. According to a report by the National Transportation Research Group, 57% of Georgia’s highways are congested during peak hours. The average driver in Georgia loses about 50 hours a year to being stuck in traffic.

Things are particularly bad in Atlanta, whose traffic problems are somewhat legendary. Atlanta’s traffic issues rank as the eighth worst in the world, and the fourth worst in the United States. (The #1 most congested country in the world? Thailand.) The amount of time lost in traffic in the Atlanta area is even worse than Georgia’s — over 70 hours each year.

Why Is Traffic So Bad?

So what makes traffic in the Atlanta area particularly bad?

It’s a combination of population (Atlanta is the ninth largest metropolitan area in the US, and 75% of those people drive to work each day), as well as the convergence of three major highways: I-20, I-75, and I-85. This conjunction is notoriously difficult to navigate, and bottlenecks are common.

The Effects of Traffic Congestion

Traffic congestion can have a huge negative impact on our lives. There’s not just the issue of lost time, but also lost money — traffic problems cost billions of dollars in terms of productive hours lost every year, averaging out to about $800 per driver in the Atlanta area alone — not to mention things like fuel and maintenance costs. On top of that, there’s the matter of insurance premiums. More traffic means a higher likelihood of accidents, which means more claims, leading to higher rates — which could leave Georgia drivers scrambling to find cheaper car insurance.

There’s also the cost to physical and mental health. Traffic congestion and the resulting delays can cause stress, either due to potentially being late to work or taking forever to get home

afterward. Traffic makes travel times unpredictable, which leads to even further stress. Stress has been proven to lead to other health issues, taking a further toll on people’s well-being.

Another possible side effect of stress is road rage. The anger and frustration caused by being stuck in traffic or seeing other drivers break rules or flaunt the social contract can lead to poor decisions like tailgating, shouting matches, and reckless driving — which brings us right back to those car insurance premiums, as well as (quite possibly) the cost of medical bills and car repairs. And if you should get in an accident (road rage-induced or not), heavy congestion could make it more difficult for emergency vehicles to get to you.

Finally, there’s the issue of pollution from fuel emissions, which can not only affect physical health, but the health of the planet.

High-Tech Solutions

But what can be done about the traffic in places like Atlanta — or anywhere else? There are some technological developments on the horizon that could make a huge difference in how we handle traffic:

Autonomous vehicles. Self-driving cars are not far from becoming commonplace. Although there is a way to go in terms of AI and adoption, smart vehicles could reduce congestion and accidents by taking human error out of the driving experience. They can also accelerate and decelerate more smoothly and dynamically, leading to a better flow of traffic overall.

Adaptive traffic lights. Smarter software for traffic lights could respond more dynamically to the flow of traffic, leading to less idle time and more relevant timing of traffic.

Drones. Many of the cars on the road are city vehicles, out checking water meters or power lines. Some of these vehicles could be replaced with automated drones, which would allow the city to monitor certain vital functions without putting another vehicle on the road. Drones are also increasingly being used for package delivery, further reducing the need for delivery trucks.

Specific Solutions for Georgia

Although the above solutions could be implemented nearly anywhere, there are some proposed solutions specific to Georgia and the Atlanta area that could secure the state as a high-tech leader of traffic solutions.

For example, there have been proposals of a “master app” which centralizes data on public transportation, ride-sharing, and traffic statistics to create a kind of all-in-one solution for citywide transportation. Atlanta already has an app called Applied Information which lets drivers know when a light is about to turn green, and the city has recently approved major funding for installing smart traffic lights to help improve traffic flow.

There are other apps which can also help alleviate traffic issues for individual drivers, such as the Waze app, which analyzes traffic patterns and suggests alternative routes or areas to avoid during certain times of day. The app even has community features so drivers can share tips and insights with one another.
