The Savannah mama owl is back.

Watch the Savannah Great Horned Owl mom on Skidaway Island LIVE via The Landings Bird Cam video feed.

The owl showed up at the nest this weekend and laid an egg on Jan. 23 and a second egg on Jan. 26. Incubation is 30-37 days.

Visit  The Landings Bird Cam or The Cornell Lab of Ornithology to see live 24/7 video with audio of what is happening in the abandoned eagle’s nest that is atop a pine tree in The Landings.

The streaming video is made possible thanks to a partnership with Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. The video feed can also be seen on the Georgia DNR site http://www.georgiawildlife.com/cams

The cameras have infrared capability, enabling nighttime viewing without disrupting the owls, according to the Savannah Owl Cam @ The Landings web site. Read more here about the owls & how this bald eagle’s nest in The Landings became an owl’s nest.

This holiday season, take advantage of the fact that we live within a day’s drive of multiple national parks & monuments & have your kids become a junior ranger at one or many of these sites.

When you take kids to tour national parks, you never know how much they are getting out of the visit. Especially for those of us moms who aren’t exactly history experts.

Which is why you need to pick up the Junior Ranger booklets at the visitor centers of national parks you visit. The Junior Ranger program kids engage more during the visits.

Junior Ranger booklets have activities about the national parks for ages 5-12. Junior ranger books are free to any visitor and usually are available at the visitors’ centers. Often, similar programs with more advanced activities are also available for older kids. Just ask at the site’s visitor center.

While doing the activities, children enjoy earning a badge and a certificate.

* New addition: 701 Stuart St. off Waters Avenue. The huge collection of giant inflatable holiday decorations are back at 701 Stuart St. off Waters Avenue in Savannah. The inflatables weren’t up last year so we didn’t have it on this year’s list of best Savannah home decorations. Glad to see them back.

* 116 N. Sheftall Circle on Wilmington Island. Roughly 40,000-50,000 lights.

* 512 Gordonston Ave. Savannah: Old-fashioned holiday yard display that’s been a favorite for years.  On certain nights, they offer hot chocolate for visitors and even Santa visits.

* 1 Nina Court in Paradise Park, Savannah,  31406: light display that plays along to music. There’s also a talking Santa.

* 1915 Linnhurst Drive, Savannah, 31404: traditional lights display accompanied by blow ups. (Expected to be up by Dec. 5 2015)

* 9 Yorkshire Place (Expected to be up by Dec. 5 2015)

*125 Sea Palm Road in Palmetto Cove subdivision off Walthour Road on Wilmington Island

* 82 Coffee Pointe Drive. For years, these owners had a favorite display at their former home at 102 Junco Way in Georgetown. They continue to have a lights display at their new home; however it’s in a gated community. But the gates are usually open until 7PM so come early.

* 130 Smoke Rise Rd. in Creekside at Richmond Hill Plantation. Dancing Lights. Nightly viewing 6-10 PM. Through Dec. 31. Creekside at Richmond Hill Plantation is located off of Highway 144 on Brisbon Road. Visitors should tune into 107.1 FM to sync up with the Dancing Lights and enjoy the show.

*Taking the 2015 season off: 182 Mills Run Drive near Chatham Parkway is taking 2015 holiday season off. We hope this favorite dancing house will be back in 2016.

Dec. 18-19: Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah will commemorate the Confederate Nog party of 1861 with the Fort Pulaski Candle Lantern Tour.

Each year during the holiday season, visitors can embark on an evening tour of the Civil War fortress by candlelight and oil lamps.

Hot cider, cookies, caroling and weapons firings will allow guests to relive the festive occasion of 1861.

Tickets are limited for this popular event, and sell out each year. Admission charged.

The original party, held during Christmas 1861, gave the Confederate garrison at Fort Pulaski a respite from the tension of impending battle. The fort casemates, armed with cannon, were decorated with holiday garlands and as one soldier commented, tables groaned under the weight of fine delicacies sent down from the city. With song and good cheer, the men celebrated a light-hearted moment as the dark clouds of war gathered over Savannah.

Visitors will have the unique experience of a guided tour of the fort by candlelight. Hot cider and cookies, caroling, and night-time weapons firings will allow visitors to re-live the festive occasion.

WHEN: Friday, December 18, 2015 & Saturday, December 19, 2015
Seven Programs will be offered each evening at 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, &9:00 p.m.

— “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, CBS. The 1964 special in which Rudolph and buddies Hermey the Elf, Yukon Cornelius and the Misfit Toys rescue Christmas, with narrator Burl Ives’ dulcet tones an added bonus.

— “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, NBC. The Dr. Seuss tale of a hostile hermit who threatens Whoville’s joy is narrated by Boris Karloff, who also voices the dastardly Grinch in the 1966 program.

_  “Toy Story That Time Forgot” 8 p.m. and “Shrek the Halls” 8:30 p.m. on Thursdsay, Dec. 3 ABC.

_ “It’s a Wonderful Life,” 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, NBC. Filmmaker Frank Capra’s holiday fable starring James Stewart and Donna Reed has been reminding audiences about what’s important in life since 1946.

— “The Little Drummer Boy,” 12 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, ABC Family. Young Aaron, who can’t afford to buy a present for baby Jesus, discovers that nothing is better than the gift of music.

— “Miracle on 34th Street,” 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, AMC. Santa Claus goes to court and a little girl stands by his story in the 1947 movie starring Edmund Gwen, Maureen O’Hara and Natalie Wood as the young believer in St. Nick.

— “White Christmas,” 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, AMC. Bing Crosby croons the title song and Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen add to the festivities at a struggling Vermont inn in need of help.

_ “A Christmas Story,” 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, TBS. A boy and a longed-for BB gun make for holiday cheer in writer Jean Shepherd’s wry 1983 tale that stars Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin.
