St. Andrew’s School receives highest ranking in Savannah as one of the most challenging U.S. high schools

May 31st, 2012

Congratulations to St. Andrew’s School – the Pre-K 3 through 12th grade independent private school on Wilmington Island – for receiving recognition as one of the most challenging U.S. high schools.

For the first time, the Washington Post’s education columnist Jay Mathews included private schools on his annual list of most challenging high schools. St. Andrew’s received the following rankings:
• 8th in Georgia
• 16th for all private schools in the nation
• 249th out of 1,926 public and private schools in America

Read the list of most challenging high schools by clicking here.

“We know that our students benefit from a challenging program that encourages them to fulfill their academic,” said Sara Rubinstein, Upper School Head. “Whereas some schools only believe in letting a small percentage of their students into IB or AP courses, we believe any student admitted to St Andrew’s should have the opportunity to pursue their ambitions in the classroom.”

St. Andrew’s is the only Savannah school to be recognized in the top ten for the state of Georgia and the highest ranked public or private school in the region.

The Challenge Index is determined by dividing the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year by the number of seniors graduating in the spring.

Mathews noted in his article that private schools are not as forthcoming with releasing this type of information. He applauds those private schools that are willing to share the data and open themselves up to comparison.

Kudos also to Savannah Arts Academy, a public school which ranked 29th in Georgia & 604th out of 1,926 public and private schools in America.

Park Pavillion with restrooms coming soon to Mother Mathilda Beasley playground, Savannah

May 23rd, 2012

Mother Mathilda Beasley playground, Savannah

new playground pavillion under construction

We can’t wait until the spiffy park pavillion at Mother Mathilda Beasley Community playground opens in downtown Savannah!

The playground – which is actually two playgrounds (one for the little tots & one for older kids) – is an often overlooked Savannah gem.  But the main thing the East Broad Street playground is lacking are restrooms.

When the park pavillion  – pictured here currently under construction – opens in an estimated 60 days, the playground will be a convenient spot to visit this summer when you’re in downtown Savannah – especially in early morning or evening hours when the sun-exposed playground equipment isn’t too hot.

The playground includes climbing walls & bars, baby & regular swings, a see-saw, slides, shaded picnic tables & more.

Next to the playground is a field, multi-purpose paved track and dog exercise area with dog station

You’re invited: Laughs for Lemonade fundraiser to fight ovarian cancer

May 22nd, 2012

Nationally recognized stand-up comic Greg Warren will headline Mom’s Lemonade Fund’s annual fundraiser Laughs for Lemonade on Saturday, June 23 at Savannah’s Lucas Theatre.

Most recently seen on “Comedy Central Presents,” “The Late Late Show” and “Last Comic Standing”, Greg has an arsenal of characters that he brings to life in his act highlighting his Midwestern upbringing, his current life struggles with the service industry, moderation, and his famed “One Star People” routine.

Greg’s strong and rapidly growing national fan base helped his recently released CD “One Star Wonder” (Comedy Central Records) become an iTunes TOP Comedy Album. In addition to his television and festival appearances, Greg can currently be seen on Comedy Central Presents and heard on Sirius/XM Comedy. At the same time, he continues performing at comedy clubs around the country where he is widely known for his colorful perspective and amazing characters.

The June event will be the third annual Laughs for Lemonade comedy show, the principal fundraiser for Mom’s Lemonade Fund. As a local, independent, not-for-profit organization, the mission of Mom’s Lemonade Fund is to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, assist with emotional and medical needs, and provide comfort care items for patients, their families and caregivers battling the disease.

The fund was created in 2009 by the families of Mary Anne Feist Mahfet and Ellen McAlpin Hogan, both victims of ovarian cancer, and both well known for their positive, uplifting outlook on life. Their mutual attribute of looking on the brighter side, or “taking lemons and making lemonade,” lent itself to the most appropriate name to honor their memory: Mom’s Lemonade Fund.

Money raised by the organization is used to support a broad range of needs including medical equipment, research, programs, services, education, as well as comfort care items for patients and their families.

Media sponsors for this year’s event include WTOC-TV, 97.3 Kiss FM, News Radio 1290 AM and 97.7 FM, and 98.7 the River. Corporate sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Scott Weeks at 912.352.7200 or scottweeks@foxandweeks.com .
