The public is invited to enjoy the Sand Arts Festival but the competition is limited to SCAD students, alumni, staff and faculty. The annual Sand Arts Festival, presented by the School of Fine Arts, School of Foundation Studies and sculpture minor program, features competitions in sand castle design, sand sculpture, sand relief and wind sculpture.

SCAD professors and staff members judge the competitions.

Parade floats will be filled with water-throwing paraphernalia as spectators line up along Butler Avenue armed with buckets of water, squirt guns and hoses ready for battle. This event is an all-out water war for fun-loving beach bums of all ages. FREE & open to the public.

2014 Engineering Design Challenge: Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Engineering Studies Program will host the 2014 Engineering Design Challenge, which will showcase the ingenuity and creativity of students from Johnson High School, Beach High School, Savannah High School, Savannah Early College and Savannah Christian Preparatory School.

Each team, comprised of four to six students, has designed and built a self-propelled hovercraft with the assistance of a project mentor and Armstrong students. The final competition will include a 40-meter race, a timed maneuver course and a design poster presentation with an engineering journal evaluation. Engineers from Gulfstream and other local companies will evaluate and select the winning design. The winning team will receive a $500 cash prize. For more information, please click here

Savannah Bicycle Campaign is holding its Seventh Annual Savannah Earth Day Wheelie Bike Ride on Saturday, April 19, 2014.

This free, family-friendly, police-escorted ride is part of the City of Savannah’s Earth Day Festival and will depart from the south end of Forsyth Park at 3 p.m. An after‐ride party, the Post Wheelie Dealie, will be held at Blowin’ Smoke Southern Cantina, 1611 Habersham St.

Check out the 2nd Annual Miss Blueprint Pageant for girls 8-18. This pageant focuses on development in the areas of public speaking, networking, etc.

Workshops
Participants attend a series of 7 mandatory workshops (at no charge to the participants) that help them to prepare for pageant night. These workshops take place a few hours on Saturdays May 24th- June 21st. Organizers bring in experts for each area of focus.

Awards
Miss Blueprint and Junior Blueprint will receive a savings bond, crown, sash, golf lessons and an opportunity to release her own public service announcement with professional assistance.

One of our favorite FREE Savannah spring events is when the SCAD Student Activities Council transforms Savannah’s historic Forsyth Park into an outdoor movie theater for “Films in Forsyth.”

This year’s films picks are the best:

In “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” four children travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny with the guidance of a mystical lion.

In “Frozen,” Anna, a fearless optimist, sets off on an epic journey, teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven, to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.
