Whether heading north for hiking and waterfalls or south for canoeing and camping, “Leaf Watch 2010” offers advice on where to find the best color at Georgia’s state parks. Found at www.GeorgiaStateParks.org/LeafWatch throughout October and November, travelers can get updates on fall color, learn safe hiking tips, and make reservations for the many campsites, cottages and lodge rooms offered at Georgia’s state parks. New this year is a partnership with Georgia Forestry Commission and a webcam at Black Rock Mountain State Park near Clayton, Ga. (Savannah geocaching) Geocaching has arrived at Georgia State Parks

Monday, May 17th, 2010

geocachinggopher_smile_small1The new Georgia State Parks Geo-Challenge invites GPS-toting geocaching explorers to travel trails in search of hidden caches.

Adventure seekers use a GPS unit to find hidden treasures, then share their experiences online. Caches usually contain trinkets that geocachers can keep, replacing them with something else. Some trackable items, called travel bugs, make their way across the country and create a story as they go.

With the new Georgia State Parks Geo-Challenge, players download a PassPort by clicking here, find hidden stamps in each cache to spell out the PassPort’s message and collect custom geocoins.

Forty-two state parks have hidden caches with “first to find” prizes of a free night of camping. Three parks also have more elusive “bonus caches.” Players go to www.Geocaching.com to find the GPS coordinates for each hidden box. After their journey, players can talk about the parks and what they found.

Caches are hidden in public-access areas, so treasure hunters will not venture off trails or into remote locations.

Newly remade Ellis Square includes kid-friendly spray fountain, life-size chess set

    Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

johnny-mercer-statue-savannahThe newly remade Ellis Square in downtown Savannah is open.

Ellis Square – one of Gen. James Oglethorpe’s original six squares – is now restored to public use and features an ellipses interior, interactive spray fountain, life-sized chess board, movable furniture and public restrooms.

It is the most environmentally friendly of Savannah’s squares, with water-efficient plants, energy-efficient lighting and HVAC system in the glass-walled visitors center, and a green roof on the public bathrooms to help reduce runoff.

The new kid-friendly interactive spray fountains at Ellis Square and the new spray fountains at Forsyth Park mean lots of cool options this summer!

Newly reopened toddler playground at Forsyth Park includes a rocking toucan

Newly reopened toddler playground at Forsyth Park includes a rocking toucan

Forsyth Park’s toddler/preschooler playground is reopened after being closed for a few years during the $4.7 million refurbishment to the fort adjoining the playground.

The playground is one of two playgrounds at Forsyth. The other one, for older children, remained open during the renovations.

When the fort’s visitors’ center and Mansion-run cafe open on Feb. 5, there will finally be access to clean public bathrooms at Forsyth Park!  No more porta-potties.

The Mansion-run cafe at the center serves Starbucks coffee, breakfast, lunch, desserts, juices, ice cream, even wine and beer as well as organic dog treats! It’s open 7 AM-7 PM.

The spanking new fort now has a canopied stage and spray fountain, where kids can play in the water during the warm months similar to the spray fountains at Hull Park in Ardsley Park.

The Forsyth Park playground, which now has a rocking toucan and duck replacing the old alligator, is ideal for younger children. My 3-year-old especially loves the low overhead bars because he can reach them on his own. Other features include baby and standard swings, low-climbing area with slides, tunnel etc.; benches; water fountains for people and dogs.

Playground/pavilion for Savannah children’s birthday parties

Host your child's birthday party at a playground/pavilion at Skidaway Island State Park

Host your child's birthday party at a playground/pavilion at Skidaway Island State Park

A plus of living in our area is you can host a children’s birthday party outdoors – even in fall. But the one challenge is finding a playground with access to bathrooms and a pavilion.

Here’s a fun suggestion for a playground children’s birthday party from SouthernMamas reader Katie Kelley: she’s having her child’s 3rd birthday party at Skidaway Island State Park.

The state park has a playground that’s suitable for smaller children; has several picnic tables available or you can rent one of the pavilions for $55 for the entire day. There are two pavilions right next to the playground with access to the bathrooms.

You can make the reservation online. Parking passes for cars is $5. You can add up the cars and then pay later so that our guests don’t have to pay, Katie emails. You also can bring your own food/snacks/cake/decorations/goodie bags, etc. For more info, click here.

Bouncing Angels inflatable play & party center gets a facelift

    bouncing-angels-logo

Bouncy house lovers, take heed: Bouncing Angels , the beloved Savannah indoor play place at Victory Drive and Skidaway Road, is undergoing some fabulous changes to make it into an even more fun play space and birthday party headquarters.

The indoor inflatable play & party entertainment center @ the Victory Drive Shopping Center, 2123 E. Victory Drive, no longer charges higher weekend rates!  Now, you pay the same price every day for kids: $5 plus tax for tots 2 and younger; $8 plus tax for the 3-and-up set.

Coming this month and in December, more inflatables and less distracting arcade games. That means kids will spend more time jumping and playing than begging Mom and Dad for money to play the coin-operated arcade games. New inflatables include Dora and Diego and a farm, plus more slides.

Bouncing Angels also plans to add two Wii Sports games, yet another fun way for children to exert all their energy.

New discount cards are also available so after 10 visits, your next THREE visits are free. You receive a discount on admission with three or more kids.

In addition to regular walk-in, open play, Bouncing Angels also is available for birthdays, field trips, mommy clubs, group events etc. Birthday parties are a snap at this monolith of play. If you’re planning to host a birthday party there, ask about the free party deal: after 15 paid admissions of $16 each, you earn a free birthday party with up to 16 kids (a $259 value).

bouncing-angels-throneBirthday are becoming much more special at Bouncing Angels, too. Coming soon: thrones for the birthday boy or girl (like the one pictured here) as well as a personalized “Happy Birthday” banner with the child’s name.  Birthday guests receive unlimited jump time – so they can bounce off all that birthday cake.

Many popular features of Bouncing Angels will remain including the free Wi-Fi and frequent jump cards, which allow you to save on admission fees.

    Bouncing Angels hours:
    10 AM-8 PM Mon-Thurs.
10 AM- 9 PM Fri.- Sat.
    noon-8 PM   Sun.

Check out their Web site here. For more info. call: 912.691.8797.
