Georgia State Railroad Museum in Savannah will have diesel train rides Fri. Jan. 12 through Mon. Jan.15 2024!

Site tour by train will be on the hour from 10AM – 3PM (with the last ride at 3PM).

Rides are first come, first served, and you MUST pick up a boarding pass in the gift shop to board the train.

Savannah Children’s Museum is next to Georgia State Railroad Museum

While visiting Georgia State Railroad Museum, be sure to purchase entry to visit Savannah Children’s Museum, too, which is right next door.

Savannah Children’s Museum is an outdoor, two-level space, built within the former Central of Georgia Railway repair facility and adjacent to Georgia State Railroad Museum. The museum features learning-through-play exhibits including an exploration maze, a reading nook, building blocks, a nature kitchen and scavenger hunt.

Open Wednesday through Sunday  from 9AM-3PM.

SCM will have special opening Mon. Jan. 15 in because schools will be closed in honor of MLK Jr Day.

This event presents a unique opportunity for your students to acclimate into the art world as observers and creators. While they feed their creative minds among the exhibitions, they’ll meet other students and foster lasting community connections.

What to expect:

Special Cannon Firing + Special Maladies & Medicine program @ Old Fort Jackson, Savannah

Special cannon firing & more this Sat. Oct. 28 @ Old Fort Jackson, Savannah

Experience Maladies & Medicine at Old Fort Jackson in Savannah and learn how civilians and soldiers dealt with illness, injury, and boredom in 1860!

This Saturday, Oct. 28, Coastal Heritage Society costumed interpretive staff will lead programs along with volunteers from Bella Harmony Music and the Southeastern Coalition of Authentic Reenactors featuring medicine, dancing, live music, military drills, and historic weapons demonstrations.

There will be a firing of Old Fort Jackson’s largest cannon, an 1857 9-inch Dahlgren, as part of the fort’s 11am Cannon Firing Program.

Hero Fest @ Old Fort Jackson, Savannah

See fire truck, police squad car ,weather tracker van & more @ Old Fort Jackson, Savannah

Coastal Heritage Society will host their annual Hero Fest at Old Fort Jackson in Savannah, Sat. Nov. 4 10AM-2PM.

Hero Fest educates families about local heroes, such as law enforcement, first responders, medical personnel, emergency organizations, military branches, and many other “heroes” who play an essential role in the Savannah community.

Several community partners will be on-site including Chatham County Police Department (plus a squad car!), Savannah Fire and Rescue (with a fire truck!), WSAV’s Weather Tracker Van, and more.

CHS Educators will lead special programming highlighting leaders, like nurses, soldiers, and teachers, and will include musket demonstrations, a cannon firing.

Tickets are included in admission ($10 per person; $7 aged 4-12). FREE for CHS members and active and retired military with ID. Become a CHS member here.

Free Community Celebration Day, Sat. Oct. 14, @ Telfair Museums’ three sites, Savannah

Telfair Museums will celebrate the conclusion of the Community in Conversation: Legacy of Slavery in Savannah initiative with a Free Family Day on Sat. Oct. 14 2023 from 10AM to 5PM,

Visitors can enjoy free admission to all three of Telfair Museums’ sites (Jepson Center, Telfair Academy, and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters) as well as special programs and activities at the Jepson Center.

The festivities will include live local performances, engagement with community partner organizations, and curator-led tours of the art exhibitions Richmond Barthé: Harlem Renaissance SculptorCreated Beasts: Sculpture by Ulysses Davis, and the Telfair Academy. Art activities for all ages will take place from 1-4pM along with treats provided by Savannah Square Pops.

The day of fun will conclude with a family-friendly puppet parade around Telfair Square.

Join us at the Jepson Center to develop your young person’s skills as a photographer. We believe that all young people are artists. With that in mind, we will approach photography as professionals do, studying the elements of art. The camp will meet outside as much as possible as we explore our environment in Telfair Square and other nearby locations. We will use DSLR digital cameras and learn about exposure, and a few historical methods involving film. Photography is fun and accessible to everyone.

Enrichment Saturday with the vultures @ Oatland Island Wildlife Center, Savannah

Enrichment Saturdays allow the public to see some of the special work that often goes on behind-the-scenes at Oatland Island Wildlife Center in Savannah.

This is an opportunity to witness how the Animal Care Staff provides special treats and activities to help hone the animals’ natural behaviors.

Adults and children will participate in creating enrichment material for our resident black vultures and will watch them experience their special creations.

Enrichment Saturday – Vultures: Sept 16 2023, 9:30-10:30AM

• Tickets are limited to 10 people per session
• $20 per person, for all ages. All attendees must have a ticket.
• All participants must be at least 4 years of age. Minors must be accompanied by a paid adult.
• Your ticket price includes admission to Oatland for the day, so feel free to stay and see the other animals after your program.

Once a month, the museum’s youngest patrons are invited to the Jepson Center for story time, a special tour, and an art activity. Strollers, crying babies, toddlers, and older siblings are all welcome here.

Come play and learn and explore the new Telfair Children’s Art Museum!

Take time to unleash your creativity, visit Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center studios in Savannah every Saturday and Sunday between 10AM and 2PM for artmaking projects for all ages!

Work at your own pace and comfort level through an array of creative mediums such as watercolors, collage, calligraphy, origami, coloring books and much more.

Each month features a special project designed to connect with an exhibition at the museum.

A studio assistant is on hand to answer questions and assist guests.

Drop-In Studio is perfect for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.
