The opening program begins with sacred music and chants, after which the lamas (monks) begin by drawing the mandala’s outline on a wooden platform.

On the following three days, the lamas will create the mandala by painstakingly pouring the sand from traditional metal funnels called chak-purs.

At completion the monks will conduct a closing ceremony and the mandala will be deconstructed as a metaphor of the impermanence of life. The sands are swept up and placed in an urn. To fulfill the function of healing, half is distributed to the audience, while the remainder is carried to the Savannah River.

Due to limited seating, the opening and closing events are ticketed with discounts to Telfair members. During the mandala construction days admission is free to members.

New Wormsloe State Historic Site Visitor Center

While at Wormsloe, check out the new Wormsloe Visitor Center (pictured above), a 6,000-square-foot building with a large patio with fireplace, gift shop, meeting space and introductory information about the site. Repurposed materials include slate roofing material from a historic dock, as well as an iron gate from the 1930s formal gardens.

A new trolley system will be operated out of the visitor center to take guests down the iconic 1.5-mile Live Oak Avenue which will help protect the historic trees from frequent auto traffic. The reduced traffic will also be an added benefit for those photographing the famous lane. Visitors will soon be able to rent bicycles to pedal down the avenue. New landscaping includes native plants, young cypress trees and live oaks, and a water feature.
