(Savannah Summer Camps 2019) Art, Video Game Development & Pre-K Camps @ Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center

Summer Camps 2019 for K-12 @ Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center, Savannah include photography, art with the pros (featuring a different local artist each day), crafting, portfolio builders, STEAM, and videogame design. Each camp culminates with a reception and exhibition in the Morrison Community Gallery.

All classes are located in the Jepson Center at 207 W. York St. unless otherwise noted.

Drawing Portfolio Builder Camp
10–12yrs: May 28–May 31, 9am–3pm
12–14yrs: July 2–6, 9am–3pm (no camp July 4)
Members $160 / non-members $180

This four-day camp is designed to help upper-elementary and middle school students improve their drawing skills and begin the process of developing a portfolio. Students will focus on measurement, proportion, perspective, and use of value to create volume and space. The camp will also include practice portraiture and sketching from clothed models. The Drawing Portfolio Builder Camp is a great class for students to learn and advance the skills necessary for developing art portfolios.

Master Artist Photography Camp
10–12yrs: June 3–7, 9am–3pm
13–16yrs: June 10–14, 9am–3pm
Members $200 / non-members $235

This intensive, weeklong program focuses on black-and-white and digital photography, as well as the basic functions of 35mm manual cameras. While instructors emphasize the advancements of digital media and Adobe Photoshop, they will also cover conventional methods of film photography, including pinhole cameras, to supplement the experience. The camp features student use of both manual and digital cameras and study of photography in Telfair exhibitions. The program will culminate with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ work in the Jepson Center.

Raising STEAM: Technology, Art, and Electronics
10–12yrs: June 17–21, 9am–3pm
Members $200 / non-members $235

This comprehensive STEAM camp gives young people the opportunity to explore the artistic potential of technology. In this weeklong camp, students will learn to use a variety of technologies and methods to create and express themselves. Students will explore 3D printing, create images with Adobe Photoshop, and solder their own electronic-noise toys. Participants will also learn basic computer programming with Arduino microcontrollers. The program culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ work in the Jepson Center.

Art with the Pros
6–10yrs: June 24–28, 9am–3pm
Members $175 / non-members $195

Each day, this camp will feature a different local artist providing a unique lesson based on his or her medium. Lunch in Telfair Square (weather permitting), breaks and games in ArtZeum, and special tours of the galleries are all included. Students will learn to give constructive criticism on their own and their peers’ artwork. The program culminates with a student art exhibition and a reception in the Jepson Center.

Videogame Development
12–14yrs: July 8–12, 9am–3pm
14–18yrs: July 15–19, 9am–3pm

Full STEAM ahead! In this weeklong camp, students will build their own videogames. Students will explore, play, and learn computer programming from scratch using game-making programs. The summer camp culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ games in the Jepson Center’s Morrison Community Gallery.

4–6yrs: July 22–July 26, 9am–noon

Stave off the summer doldrums! Exploring Telfair Museums’ three sites and exhibitions has never been so much fun. Each day, participants will tour a new exhibit and learn to create the very same types of art seen in the galleries, finding inspiration with instruction in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students will immerse themselves in innovative arts lessons taught by professional artists.

Crafters Camp
8–11yrs: July 15–19, 9am–3pm
Members $175 / non-members $195

The Ultimate Crafty Kids Camp is packed with a variety of projects: screen printing, knitting, friendship bracelets, calligraphy, paper crafts, and much more. In this weeklong camp, students will explore and learn techniques in a rich variety of crafts that will inspire and develop their desire to be independent makers.

Videogame Design with Scratch
9–12yrs: July 22–July 26, 9am–noon
Members $100 / non-members $125

This summer camp teaches beginning students how to create their own videogames using Scratch, a colorful programming environment that makes it easy to bring interactive stories to life. In class, students collaborate on developing a game from beginning to final polish—a fun and informative way to introduce younger students to the art of videogame development.

Flannery O'Connor 2015 Parade & Street Fair

You’re invited to a FREE lively annual celebration of acclaimed author and Savannah native Flannery O’Connor – the Flannery O’Connor Annual Birthday Parade & Street Fair – Sun. 1-4PM March 24 2019 in LaFayette Square in Savannah’s Historic District.

Free family fun, live music and more near the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home, located at 207 E. Charlton St. Featuring live music, a wacky parade, coffee/tea/cake, and more. Local authors will present their writings and vendors will share vintage, custom, a creatively crafted wares. Another favorite: chicken-poop bingo for kids.

The parade starts at 3PM.

Attendees are invited to walk in the parade, bring handmade signs and sing along. Live music throughout the event will be provided by a cavalcade of singer-songwriters and musicians from some of Savannah’s finest local bands. Music for the parade will be played by an all-star line up of the Sweet Thunder Strolling Band.

Costumes inspired by Flannery O’Connor characters, settings or the author’s life are encouraged but optional.

You’ll also be welcomed to visit the Flannery O’Connor Home free to get a sense for our Flannery’s Depression-era childhood. Photo-ops with a gorilla, a peacock bandshell, and throughout the home will be available.

The event is free and open to the public.

Old Fort Jackson Family Camp-Out 2019 Savannah Coastal Heritage Society

 

Tickets are now on sale for the 2019 Old Fort Jackson Family Camp-Out, a new nighttime event for families to experience historic programs and family fun in a 210-year-old National Historic Landmark in Savannah.

The event will be Fri. March 8, 6-10PM @ Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, 31404.

Guests will train as soldiers, make a Civil War decoder, and write secret messages. Throughout the night, attendees will be able to use their new skills and tools to uncover a spy among the soldiers.

Dinner is included in the ticket price and will be served at 6:45PM. The dinner menu is: BBQ chicken, Mac & Cheese, Green Beans and your choice of soda or water or tea. Hot coffee will also be available for adults.

Pre-registration and prepayment are required. Tickets: $25 for members & $30 for the general public.

Visionary videogame designer Keita Takahashi’s game “Alphabet,” located in the Jepson Center’s TechSpace gallery in Savannah, can be played by up to 26 people at a time.

On Sat. Feb. 23 2019, celebrate the fun and whimsical world of Dr. Seuss during “Seuss Fest” 2019 in Savannah.

Event attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character in honor of the children’s book author, who would be celebrating his 115th birthday on March 2nd.

Seuss Fest 2019 will be 10AM-4PM @ Savannah Children’s Museum, 655 Louisville Rd. Savannah, GA 31401.

Savannah Children’s Museum educators will lead the group with Seuss stories, games and activities. This year will include: a Seuss Science Station, a Read-A-Thon and a Seusstastic Selfie Station, complete with costumes and props.

Please use #SeussFest2019 to share your experience on social media.

Community partners that help provide Seuss-filled fun throughout the day. The Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital Of Savannah will lead an interactive game. The Savannah Tree Foundation will share about seed planting at the “Lorax- Save the Trees” station. The Savannah Children’s Theatre will perform at 10:30AM & Noon.

Unleash your creativity @ Jepson Center studios every day for artmaking projects for all ages. Work at your own pace and comfort level through an array of creative mediums such as watercolors, collage, calligraphy, origami, coloring books (for adults, too), and more.

Each month features a special project designed to connect with a specific exhibition at the museum. A studio assistant is always on hand to answer questions and assist guests.

Drop-In Studio is open year round and perfect for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

FREE admission to museums, historic sites on Super Museum Sunday, Feb. 10

Georgia History Festival’s Super Museum Sunday 2019 is Sun. Feb. 10 when various museums and historical sites in the Savannah area are free and open to the public.

See the list of participating Super Museum Sunday Sites here. 

Various sites will have free admission Feb. 10 2019 from noon – 4PM, unless alternate hours are listed.

Telfair Museums’ three sites – The Jepson Center, Telfair Academy & Owens-Thomas House, will be open & free noon-4PM. Explore the exciting work of Carrie Mae Weems’ Sea Islands Series, meet and discover local artists, and create artworks that blend fabric, photography, and text.

Night at the Museum Savannah 2019 History

You’re invited to Coastal Heritage Society’s 2019 “Night at the Museum” event on Sat. Jan. 26 @ Savannah History Museum, 303 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The annual event takes visitors through night guard training and then on a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum. Guests will be able to interact with historic characters from Savannah History Museum’s exhibits as they appear to magically come to life. This year’s characters include: Casimir Pulaski, Flannery O’Connor, a Central of Georgia Railroad worker, and many more.

The event consists of a 90-minute interactive program in the museum. Guests will have the option to choose from two time slots for the program: 5 pm to 6:30 pm or 6:30 to 8 pm. Event participants will also have two opportunities to view the film “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” at 3 pm and 8 pm. The 105-minute film screening is optional and seating is first come, first served.

Tickets are $12 per person for guests ages 18 months and older. Pre-registration for the event is required and tickets for each time slot can be purchased here.

PULSE Art Technology Festival 2019 Savannah

PULSE Art + Technology Festival returns to Savannah Jan. 24-27, 2019 featuring games and appearances by renowned videogame designer Keita Takahashi

The annual PULSE Art + Technology Festival is an activity-filled, multi-day event highlighting innovative, technology-based art. This year, festivalgoers can enjoy the fun and quirky world of award-winning videogame designer Keita Takahashi, lectures on the future of design, STEAM workshops, performances, and more Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center.

Several Savannah-made videogames will also be on view throughout the festival, including Alex Barrett and Samantha Davenport’s Squidlit, with characters and sounds reminiscent of vintage Game Boy games, and Halseo’s ultra-competitive Battery Jam, in which players smash their robotic opponents into smithereens.

FREE Family Day, Sat. Jan. 26

A Chatham County Free Family Day 1-4PM on Jan. 26 @ Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center of the Arts will exhibit STEAM projects from local schools. In keeping with the humorous and inventive spirit of Takahashi’s games, the museum will also present a performance by That1Guy, an artist known for his unique instrument, the Magic Pipe, at 3PM.

Please note: Free admission is for Chatham County residents and students currently enrolled at area colleges only. Proof of residency/enrollment is required for admission.

Featured Exhibition

Keita Takahashi: Zooming Out (on view through July 14, 2019)

This exhibition will include playable versions of all of Takahashi’s major Namco games, including the original Katamari Damacy and its newly remastered edition, Katamari Reroll, We Love Katamari, and Noby Noby Boy. The exhibition will also include Takahashi’s independent games and immersive installations, including Tenya Wanya Teens, which is operated with two 16-button controllers, the AR game Woorld (Funomena), and a reimagined, immersive take on the classic game PacMan (with Clement Shimizu and Babycastles).

Early projects as well as those currently in development, including the eagerly awaited major game Wattam (Funomena, Annapurna Interactive), will also be on view.

This exhibition is organized by Telfair Museums and curated by Harry DeLorme, Senior Curator of Education.

Savannah Santa Train 2018

Santa Train Savannah 2018 Georgia State Railroad Museum

Savannah Santa Train, one of the largest annual holiday events in the Lowcountry, will take place this Sat. Dec. 8, 2018, 9AM-5PM at Georgia State Railroad Museum, 655 Louisville Rd., Savannah.

To celebrate the tenth-annual event, there will be more workshops and special programming than ever before! Guests can build a holiday wonderland with Snapology, enjoy caroling from Savannah Stage Company, see and purchase handmade holiday spinning tops created by the Lowcountry Turners, enjoy performances from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Savannah Children’s Theatre and design holiday cards for hospital patients with Savannah Children’s Museum’s “Carts with heART” program.

Other activities for visitors will include learning how to shoulder a musket during Toy Soldiers Training, festive holiday dancing with Three Fold Chord, engaging in STEAM learning to see how a chimney works during Chimney Science, celebrating different cultures during our “Holidays Around the World” scavenger hunt, taking a holiday-themed ride on a historic steam locomotive and sharing a Christmas wish with Santa Claus. The Salvation Army will also be bringing their mobile canteen with free donuts and coffee.

In addition to workshops and activities, visitors can purchase a gourmet grilled cheese from The Big Cheese food truck and have a sweet treat for dessert from Leopold’s Ice Cream.

Savannah Santa Train is hosted each year by Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah Children’s Museum.

I Have Marks to Make Public Opening

Telfair’s venerable “I Have Marks to Make” exhibition celebrates its 24th year, bringing together individuals of all ages from the Savannah community to celebrate the power of art to transform lives. Works in the exhibition are drawn from community partner organizations and more than half are created in Telfair’s extensive outreach programs to audiences across Savannah, from children to veterans to seniors.

The event will consist of poetry readings and performances followed by a 3PM reception for participants and their families.
