Sensory Soft Sunday for children with autism Savannah Savannah Children’s Museum will continue to host Sensory Soft Sunday as a unique offering for families with children who have special needs. Savannah Children’s Museum will open from 9-11am on Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 to provide these families an opportunity to make connections while enjoying SCM’s many exhibits in a sensory friendly way.

Through discussions with the special needs community, Savannah Children’s Museum discovered that there are few offerings of this kind in the region. Museum staff feel it is especially important to provide all children, regardless of age or ability, an opportunity to experience all that Savannah Children’s Museum has to offer.

The goal of Sensory Soft Sunday: provide an exclusive time period for the families of children with special needs in order to reduce anxiety and overstimulation that can occur when the museum is open to the general public. The trains at Georgia State Railroad Museum, our adjacent facility, will not operate during this exclusive time period, to eliminate the sound of whistles.

To promote a calm atmosphere, the number of attendees is limited. The staffing, however, is not reduced so families may have increased staff interaction as desired or needed. A designated ‘quiet zone’ is located in the orange caboose at Savannah Children’s Museum.

Pre-registration for Sensory Soft Sunday is required and payment is due upon arrival. To register, email Liz Stratford at Lstratford@chsgeorgia.org.

Cost: $7.50 per person over 18 months, free for Coastal Heritage Society Members
Time: 9am-11am on the following Sundays: Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15, Dec. 13

Admission is $5 per adult, $2 per student.

There will also be a split-the-pot raffle available. Tickets will be sold prior to the bee and the night of. Raffle tickets at $5 each or 5 for $20.

Teams are given rules and asked to familiarize themselves with them. The teams have 4 people on them. There are 3 adults and one student (grades 4-8). If a team needs a student, the school has them waiting in the wings. The teams can huddle after they are given the word, then only one person comes to the microphone at a time. Each person on the team spells in turn.

Teams can raise money for their team to earn a “spell-a-gain.” The team who raises the most money wins one “spell-a-gain”, which entitles that team to a new word if they misspelled the word given.

A second “spell-a-gain” will be awarded to a team. For every $100 each team raises the team’s name will be placed in the hat. So if they raise $200, it will be placed in twice, $300 three times, etc. One lucky team will be drawn from the hat and awarded a “spell-a-gain”.

All money earned by the teams should be cash or checks made payable to Tybee Island Maritime Academy.

Words used will be taken from the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee here.

Teams dress up, and act crazy. It’s a family event and lots of fun for all.
