Join Georgia State Railroad Museum (Roundhouse Railroad Museum) for Summer Toddler Art!

Led by Miss Rebecca, Coastal Heritage Society’s Director of Young Children’s Programming, toddler art class at the Georgia State Railroad Museum is a fun time for socialization between parents and their little ones. It’s incredible to see the creative juices flowing as toddlers work on early writing skills.

The next toddler art 8-week session begins July 15, and is held in the Georgia State Railroad Museum kids’ car on Friday mornings at 10am (with the exception of July 29, which will be held at 2pm).

2011 Pottery and Sculpture Classes Spring & Summer Camp Offerings

Take a sculpture or pottery class to learn something new. Or continue a flourishing hobby. Classes are centrally located in Midtown Savannah. The hand building classes include instruction in different sculpture techniques such as coiling, slab work, pinching, carving, and bas-relief designs. The pottery instruction involves learning how to center the clay on the wheel, how to make plates, bowls and cylinders, and how to attach handles and make surface designs.

At the end of the session, children will apply either underglaze paints or glazes to complete their work with a splash of color. All work will be finished with a gloss glaze and fired. The fees include all materials and firings. The work will be available for pick up after all of the firings have been done. Please call or email Tiffany with any questions or to register. Grace Repella is the perfect Pippi Longstockings, the kids-on-stage musical playing this weekend at the Savannah Children’s Theatre , 2160 E Victory Drive, Crossroads Shopping Center, Savannah, 31404.

Here’s a way you can help a Savannah College of Art and Design professor who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Savannah artists and art professors have banded together in the hopes of relieving some of the financial burdens that art professor Sherran Deems is facing while battling cancer. Several of her friends and co-workers who teach drawing in the foundationʼs department at SCAD have decided to throw an art auction and exhibition hoping to raise enough funds to help Sherran pay for chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well as many other unexpected surgeries and expenses that accompanies many who face such a challenging illness. Sherran Deems is a single, vibrant, talented, and proud lady, known for her thorough and demanding color theory and drawing curriculum she teaches at the School of Foundations at the Savannah College of Art and Design. When she was first diagnosed with stage 3b cancer, she thought she could fight through her demanding treatments, but soon discovered that she was going to be needing help. And, with family members scattered across the nation, she had to rely on the closest thing she has to family in Savannah; her fellow artists and co-workers.

ArtZeum at Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center for the Arts –  the two-level, hands-on children’s section – has some new and interesting additions to the small collection of children’s books on art in the back corner of the second level.

The books are certain to spark children’s excitement about creating their own artwork as well as learning about the styles of the great masters. Here are a few that we checked out from our local library and liked. Thanks, Jepson, for the suggestions!

“A Child’s Book of Play in Art” by Lucy Micklethwait – This book encourages children to look at paintings, explore them and find in them familiar and unfamiliar things. The collection of pictures aims to inspire a range of activities.

“Children’s Book of Art: An introduction to the world’s most amazing paintings and sculptures”

“Discovering Great Artists” by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga – This book offers fun hands-on art projects to teach children about the styles of the great masters. Example: to teach kids how Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel, a lie-down painting project involves taping paper to the underside of a table and having your child lie on their back and paint the “ceiling.”

Singing, dance and pageantry spell crowd-pleaser. Which is why you need to treat your little princesses and princes to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, A Musical at Savannah Children’s Theatre this month.

This production spellbinds with bling. My 4-year-old and I attended opening night Friday and he couldn’t take his eyes off the stage.  Kudos the Savannah Children’s Theatre for another engaging show, which includes a live, seven-member orchestra.

The show is two hours with one intermission. Popcorn at the snack bar is only $1.

The tulle and tiaras aren’t limited to just the stage. If your wee one falls into the frilly set, plan to attend “Tea with Cinderella” 1 PM Sat. Jan. 22 at Savannah Children’s Theatre. Come join Cinderella and her friends for tea and then stay for the matinee. $30 (includes tea and the show)

Talk about the royal treatment.

Melissa Holloway received a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Art Education at Ole Miss. For the past five years she lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico where she earned a Masters in Art Therapy. Melissa currently works part-time at a local pre-school and also volunteers at Backus Children’s Hospital.

Two new SCHOLASTIC STORYBOOK TREASURES DVDs featuring animals with attitude saved us over Christmas.

The Georgia Christmas snow storm meant we were snowed in for four and half days in a mountainside cabin in Blue Ridge, Ga. Four days with a 2 and 4 year old and a quickly diminishing supply of treats (and patience). Fortunately, I had packed the two new Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs.

One collection “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and More Animal Adventures” (62 mins. + extras, $14.95) features Jon Scieszka’s fun and creative take on the Three Little Pigs along with four additional stories. Kids get to hear the rest of the story, straight from the wolf’s mouth and learn that the whole Big Bad Wolf thing was just a big misunderstanding.

The DVD also includes “The Pig’s Wedding” (adapted from the story written and illustrated by Helme Heine); “Wallace’s List” about a mouse who can do almost anything – as long as he has a list; “Henry Builds a Cabin”, from the book by D.B. Johnson and narratd by James Naughton and “This is the House that Jack Built”, narrated by Mandy Patinkin from the book by Simms Taback.

The second all new DVD collection that helped entertain the kids after playing all day in the snow featured adaptations of Doreen Cronin’s best-sellers “Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type,” “Giggle Giggle Quack” and “Duck for President. ” The 3-DVD set “CLICK, CLACK, MOO: COWS THAT TYPE…AND MORE AMUSING ANIMAL TALES (3 hrs., 44 mins. + extras, $24.95) is amusing for both kids and adults, even if you’re not snowbound.

The collection also includes includes Cronin’s new classics “Diary of a Spider”, “Diary of a Worm” and “Diary of a Fly”, as well as “The Cow Who Fell in the Canal”, “Chicken Little”, “I, Crocodile”, “Hot Hippo”, “Waiting for Wings”, “Let’s Give Kitty a Bath”, “Roberto the Insect Architect”, “The Story of the Dancing Frog”, and “Dooby Dooby Moo.”
