(Savannah Fall Festivals 2018): Savannah Greek Festival

Savannah Greek Festival 2016

The 68th annual Greek Festival at the Hellenic Center, 14 W. Anderson St., Savannah, Oct. 11-13 2018.

The Greek Festival, sponsored by St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, will feature homemade Greek foods, desserts greek dancing, church tours, market place, a live band and so much more during the three-day celebration of Greek food, music and heritage.

Menu favorites include:

  • spanakopita (Spinach w/ feta cheese & herbs baked in layers of filo);
  • Greek meatballs (a favorite for kids of all ages);
  • gyros (sliced beef and lamb served on pita bread);
  • diples (fried filo dough dipped in honey syrup);
  • kourabiedes (butter cookies topped with powdered sugar;
  • baklava, pecans & spices baked in layers of filo.

Hosted in the St. Paul’s Hellenic Center, the Savannah Greek Festival attracts thousands of visitors each year. Come to enjoy the food, shopping, music, dancing and atmosphere of the Greek culture.

The festival will have free admission until 4PM Thursday & Friday with a requested $2 donation after 4PM. There is also a requested $2 donation all day Saturday.

Some Savannah historic sites will offer free admission days, other programming highlighting African American history on Sat. Aug. 18 or Sun. Aug. 19 2018 as part of Lift Every Voice: Free Community Day.

Lift Every Voice: Savannah’s African American Historic Sites Free Day will offer free or reduced fee access and special programming relating to the contributions of Savannah’s African American people to the area’s history, from the colonial period through the 20th century.

The participating sites are: Beach Institute, in partnership with City of Savannah, Research Library and Municipal Archives; Georgia Historical Society; Georgia State Railroad Museum; Ossabaw Island Foundation; Pin Point Heritage Museum; and Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House; Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Programs at each site will focus on African American history connections and will include a variety of activities for guests of all ages.

Georgia State Railroad Museum & Pin Point Heritage Museum, Aug. 18

Georgia State Railroad Museum and Pin Point Heritage Museum in Savannah will participate in Lift Every Voice on Sat. Aug. 18 2018.

Georgia State Railroad Museum will give tours exploring the unique African American contributions to the history of the Central of Georgia Railway and other railroads throughout America. Visitors will learn about their expanded historical interpretation to share more diverse stories at this museum.

Pin Point Heritage Museum will offer tours about Gullah/Geechee culture, given by the residents who grew up in the small, close-knit community. Guests can learn about the unique lifeways, from daily life to religion, language and food. The Pin Point community was founded in 1896 by freedmen after the Civil War.

Free admission to Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House, Aug. 19

On Sun. Aug. 19, receive FREE admission to the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters in Savannah for a special tour focused on the lives of Emma, Peter, and Diane, who were some of the enslaved people who lived on the site.

Several Savannah area cultural organizations and sites are collaborating in August to honor our community’s African American history, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).

Lift Every Voice, whose name comes from the historic song of the same name by James Weldon Johnson, began as a global initiative by the Smithsonian, encouraging partners, organizations, and individuals who study, love, or support African American history and culture to join NMAAHC in their inaugural year celebration (2016- 2017).

Free admission to Fort Pulaski National Monument, Aug. 19

Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah will participate in Lift Every Voice: Savannah’s African American Historic Sites Free Days on Sun. Aug. 19, 2018.

The park will offer special programming highlighting the enslaved people’s courageous escapes to Union lines following the fort’s recapture in 1862. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about post-emancipation life on the Sea Islands and lift their own voices about what freedom and bravery mean to them.

Families who have children with special needs or autism are invited to Sensory Soft Sunday at the Savannah Children’s Museum on select days.

The museum will open their doors from 9-11AM, so families can explore and enjoy the space with less concern regarding crowds (weather permitting).
