I’m A Maker! Bootcamp, Savannah

Maker Bootcamp Savannah Unique Savannah summer day camp – I’m a Maker! Bootcamp – teaches youth valuable technical skills.

This five day-long series of workshops this summer will teach local youth basic skills in 3D modeling, 3D printing & wood turning.

The first annual I’m a Maker! Bootcamp is July 25-July 29 by Maven Makers and is open to ages of 10-15.

The brick and mortar Maven Makers location opened in the fall of 2015 as a Savannah-based “maker space” and is the first business of its kind in the area. A maker space is a relatively new concept in which creative individuals known as “Makers” share their technical knowledge and skills, as well as tools and equipment.

In the same way a gym membership provides access to an array of exercise equipment, a maker space grants its members the use of an entire workshop for a nominal fee.

During the I’m A Maker! Bootcamp, youths between the ages of 10 and 15 will receive training on various shop equipment and power tools with an emphasis on their safe and responsible operation.

Once trained, the young Makers will create two spinning tops, one carved by hand on a wood lathe and another utilizing state-of-the-art 3D modeling and 3D printing technology. The camp will include competitions pitting the Makers’ spinning tops against one another to find out which ones spin the longest. The Makers will learn the principals of Design Thinking – a methodology of finding solutions to complex problems – to refine and improve the designs of their tops, and make them spin longer.

No prior technical knowledge or power tool experience is required. Each camper will take home a free “I’M A MAKER” T-shirt, the spinning tops they create, as well as newly acquired technical skills in wood working, power tools, 3D design, and 3D printing.

The Maven Makers space is at 415 West Boundary St., Savannah. Workshops will be 9AM-3PM.

Aftercare from 3-5PM will be available for a nominal fee.

About Maven Makers

Maven Makers co-founder, Ty Donaldson, an alumni of Savannah College of Art and Design, started the company last year when he lost access to the school’s shop resources.

While enrolled at SCAD, I had access to their amazing arsenal of shop tools as a student, but that went away after I graduated,” Donaldson said. I knew other local SCAD alum who were in the same dilemma. That’s when my co-founder, Tim Cone, and I both realized Savannah was desperately in need of a maker space. Thus, Maven Makers was born.”
