For information on musical lessons, check with Beth Bevars, ensemble manager for Armstrong Atlantic Youth Orchestra. She can email you a list of local musical instrument teachers, their specialties, locations, contact info, lesson tips etc. Email Beth at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Beth offers lots of great tips about getting your child started with a musical instrument in my Q&A column with her here.
One tip Beth suggests is exposing your child to live music.
Savannah has many opportunities for kids to attend live music concerts including:
* FREE CONCERT, 2 PM Thurs. Aug. 29. Armstrong Atlantic State University has several Music Department Concerts each semester featuring the band, chorus, jazz band, and percussion ensemble. There are also many student recitals. On Aug. 29, there will be a student recital featuring Selina Reed on euphonium and Andrew Davis on trombone. The recital is free and open to the public. In addition to music by Antonio Vivaldi, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leopold Mozart and Franz Schubert, this program will include a tantalizing tuba/euphonium quartet arrangement of Gioachino Rossini’s popular Barber of Seville Overture, the original of which is recognized by many from a famous Bugs Bunny episode, “The Rabbit of Seville.” Information about this recital and the 2013 concerts are available here.
* Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra will present a new series of Sunday family concerts at the First Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head. All the concerts will be at 4 p.m. The first will be December 2. More information and tickets prices visit http://www.hhso.org
