An estimated 17.1 million children nationwide have a mental illness.

“Mental illness still has a lot of stigma surrounding it, especially when it comes to children,” SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Dr. Nelson Elam said. “And yet, that number of children with a mental illness is more than the number of children with cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. It’s time we stop being hesitant to talk about mental illnesses that are potentially harming our children.”

Breast milk is up to 90 percent water, so getting enough fluids will keep both you and your baby well-hydrated.

When you’re lactating, you may need up to 16 cups of water per day. Try to drink a cup of water every time you breastfeed.

As for coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages, keep in mind that small amounts of the stimulant can pass through your milk to your baby. Limiting your intake to 300 milligrams per day may help to avoid fussiness.
