SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Blaine Crossland

Does hand sanitizer work as well as hand-washing?

SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Blaine Crossland answers that question and shares some facts to consider when deciding whether to reach for hand sanitizer or if you should wash your hands with warm water and soap.

“People love hand sanitizer, because it’s a convenient option to keep in a purse, backpack, or car when you do not have access to soap and water,” said SouthCoast Health Pediatrician Blaine Crossland in Richmond Hill. “It’s great for kids too, because sometimes it’s hard to wrangle them to hold still long enough to wash their hands properly.”

Which is better? Hand-washing. Learn why here.

SouthCoast Health physician answers questions about best practices for handwashing

Patel Misal Pooler physician

Dr Misal Patel

Proper handwashing is important now more than ever.

Physicians at SouthCoast Health in Savannah say to avoid buying hand sanitizer with less than 60 percent alcohol content. Studies show that antibacterial gel with any less alcohol doesn’t consistently kill germs.

“You touch your mouth, your eyes, your nose throughout the day many many times without realizing it,” Dr. Misal Patel of SouthCoast Health said. “You touch doorknobs, desks, phones, keyboards, so many things that other people come into contact with as well so the best thing to do is to keep your hands clean and be mindful of what you’re touching.”

Learn more here.

Dr. Patel is now seeing patients at the newly-expanded Pooler location (Godley Station Professional Park, 1000 Towne Center Blvd., Building 1200, Pooler). A Savannah native, Dr. Patel specializes in a variety of primary care services, and specializes in preventive care and management of chronic diseases.

How to help abused/neglected children in Savannah, Chatham County

Friday, November 13th, 2020

CASA Savannah Chatham County volunteer sessions 2020 virtual

You can change an abused or neglected child’s story.

Savannah/Chatham County’s nonprofit CASA program, part of a national program which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, is in need of more volunteers to represent the best interests of abused or neglected children in the court system.

This week’s SouthernMamas.com newspaper article spotlights how a Savannah CASA volunteer helped save a teen who ran away with a man she met online. Read it here.

You, too, can become a CASA volunteer. Online CASA volunteer info sessions are held regularly.

Virtual informational sessions for volunteers
Thurs. Nov. 19 2020, 5:30pm
Thurs. Dec. 10 2020, 5:30pm

Register for the online info sessions on how to be a CASA volunteer here.

CASA trains volunteers to serve as the eyes and ears of judges in child abuse and neglect cases. A newly trained volunteer is appointed one case at first to research in depth. This involves talking to the children, relatives, teachers and others, attending court hearings, completing court reports and more. The volunteer then reports back to the judge with information gathered about what would be in the best interest of the child.

Abused or neglected children in the court system who have a CASA volunteer are more likely to find a safe, permanent home, more likely to get more help while in the system, and more likely to do better in school.
