Attention parents of STEM enthusiasts in elementary and middle school in Savannah and the Lowcountry.

Despite the social distancing challenges we are all facing this year, the Savannah Coastal Empire Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is still hosting their annual Girls Engineer It Day!

This year the VIRTUAL event will be on Nov. 7 2020 and will consist of several tracks Elementary School and Middle School aged students can choose from.

Less that 40 percent of STEM college graduates are female. The goal of Girls’ Engineer It Day is to engage elementary and middle school students and show how much fun and interesting STEM-related topics can be.

Participants will learn from fun, hands-on engineering activities taught by local STEM professionals.

You’re invited to Tricks, Treats and Trains, a socially distanced trick-or-treating experience at Georgia State Railroad Museum in Savannah on Halloween day, Sat. Oct. 31 2020, 10AM-noon.

Costumed staff and volunteers handing out treats will be positioned throughout the outdoor museum for participants to trick-or-treat.

Ongoing demonstrations of Georgia State Railroad Museum’s operational turntable will allow guests to see the site in action.

Savannah Children’s Museum will also be open and offering Halloween-themed activities throughout the day and is an additional fee.

Georgia State Railroad Museum is a large, open-air historic site with plenty of space for safe social distancing. Costumed staff and volunteers handing out treats will be positioned throughout the outdoor museum for participants to trick-or-treat. The cost to attend Tricks, Treats, and Trains is $5 per person for all participants, ages 18 months and older. A discounted combination ticket including admission to Savannah Children’s Museum and Tricks, Treats, and Trains is $10 per person.

Telfair Museums announces a brand new schedule of in person and virtual classes for Winter 2020, completely redesigned to insure social distancing and health and safety protocols, while providing engaging, fun, educational experiences for everyone.

This class approaches photography as professionals do, studying the Elements of Art. Keeping a social distance, the camp will meet outside as much as possible to explore the environment in Telfair Square and other nearby locations. The Center for Wildlife Education and and The Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center at Georgia Southern in Statesboro will reopen on Mon. Oct. 5, 2020 after closing in March due to COVID-19.

Come check out the new waterfowl observation deck. This walk-in deck is now open to the public and allows for up close encounters with the center’s waterfowl.

The center’s collection has grown both in number and in species, making the Wildlife Center home to one of the largest waterfowl aviaries in the state of Georgia.

Other features of the Wildlife Education Center include a Discovery Trail which includes a opossum and skunk; a Habitat Walk includes a live bald eagle in her nest; 10 displays housing several live birds; a wetland preserve with ducks and wading birds, a playground; and “Discovery Logs” where kids can crawl inside and see encased ladybugs, grasshoppers, frogs, beetles and more.
