BP-GOAL Scholarship enables qualifying students to attend Georgia private schools like St. Andrew’s School, Savannah

Monday, October 7th, 2013
BP-GOAL Scholarships available in Savannah

Mr. Chuck Moore (BP Representative), Dyann Hunter and her son Malcolm Williams-Green, Super Bowl Champ Hubert Ginn and Sara Rubinstein (St. Andrew’s Upper School Head)

We here at SouthernMamas.com often hear from parents looking for an alternative to Savannah-Chatham public schools for their children. Here’s one way that qualifying students can attend local private schools: the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program.

This month, Malcolm Williams-Green was awarded a BP-GOAL Scholarship to attend St. Andrew’s School for the 2013-2014 school year.

“We are thrilled to have Malcolm join the St. Andrew’s community,” said Mark Toth, Head of School. “I am confident that St. Andrew’s will provide the perfect setting for Malcolm to pursue his dream of attaining a strong academic foundation.”

The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program’s BP-GOAL Scholars Fund awarded 30 scholarships, enabling qualifying students to attend Georgia private schools for the 2013-2014 academic year. BP and its Castrol subsidiary, longtime education supporters, initiated this scholarship program in connection with Georgia GOAL in 2012, to provide Georgia parents with more options for the education of their children.

Each award amount is based on the tuition rate at the student’s chosen private school and his/her family’s demonstrated need. To be eligible to apply, applicants had to be enrolled in a Georgia public school, have income no more than 2 times the poverty guideline and have been accepted and sponsored by a qualified Georgia private school.

This year’s BP-GOAL scholarship recipients are from areas in Georgia where BP and its subsidiary Castrol do business. Additionally, the scholarship recipients demonstrate drive, motivation and strengths in math, science and technologies important to the energy industry.

Lisa Kelly, Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program president said, “It is important for students to have the option of a private school that fits their needs if they can’t achieve their full potential in their local public school. The Georgia legislature created this opportunity to improve educational outcomes and to allow families to put their children on paths to success.”

Kelly explained that the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program is the state’s leading student scholarship organization. Providing children throughout the Peach State with Greater Opportunities for Access to Learning (“GOAL”), the program has awarded close to 10,000 scholarships totaling more than $34 million since 2008.

St. Andrew’s School teachers pick their favorite educational iPad apps for children

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013
Best educational iPad games apps for children Savannah

Dr. Kelley Waldron, Lower School Head

St. Andrew’s School on Wilmington Island has many features that we love. One that really makes us swoon here at SouthernMamas.com is how cleverly the school incorporates technology into the classroom. Which is why it wasn’t surprising last school year when St. Andrew’s was named Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-13 academic year for its use of the iPad and Apple technology as tools to create a relevant and engaging school experience for its students.

The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that excel in areas of innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s shared vision of exemplary learning environments.

St. Andrew’s has implemented iPad usage for all of its students, pre-K through 12th-grade.

As Dr. Kelley Waldron, Lower School Head, said:
“The iPad is never a replacement for best practices or seen as the curriculum- it is a tool in the classroom. The value of this tool is that it allows teachers to differentiate instruction by offering extra challenge to a student ready to move on, or reinforcement of a skill or concept for a student who needs the extra time to understand and master it. The best apps engage students in variety of learning modalities- asking them to solve problems, kinesthetically move letters or numbers, engage creatively with the content, and work in a self-paced fashion.”

So we asked St. Andrew’s teachers to share some of the top apps they love. Here are their picks:

BB Magic Apps – Teach basic phonics, right to left reading and spelling, blending and sight words

Endless Alphabet App– Educational and entertaining at the same time

Tally Tots App – A counting app that offers 20 different activities

St. Andrew’s is an independent International Baccalaureate World School committed to being a leader in 21st Century teaching and learning, which includes a curricular focus on creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and character. For more information on the Pre-K 3 through Grade Twelve school, visit www.saintschool.com  or call 912.897.4941.

Drive-thru Flu Shot Clinic, 10/10, Savannah

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Drive thru flu shot clinic SavannahDrive-through Flu Vaccination Clinic Scheduled for October 10 in Savannah.

The drive-thru clinic will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, in the parking lot of the old health department (entrance to the flu vaccination clinic will be on Eisenhower Drive). No appointment is necessary. Cost for both the injectable (shot) and nasal spray form is $25. A high dose flu vaccine is also being offered for people ages 65 and older, and it is designed to provide the best protection for that age group. The high dose vaccine will be $40 per dose. Cash, check, Medicaid, Medicare, and State Health Benefit Plan will be accepted.

To save even more time at the drive-through clinic, residents can download and complete the flu vaccine consent form by going to www.gachd.org/chatham and clicking on the “Flu Vaccine Information” link on the Drive-through Flu Vaccination Clinic Scheduled for October 10.

Getting vaccinated against the flu is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. Neither the flu shot nor the nasal spray can cause the flu. The shot is approved for use in healthy people 6 months of age and older, people with chronic medical conditions, and pregnant women. The nasal spray is approved for use in healthy people 2 to 49 years of age who are not pregnant.

The flu virus is easily spread through coughs and sneezes and by touching something with the virus on it and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth. That’s why good health habits are also important including staying home when you’re sick; avoiding close contact with people who are sick; coughing or sneezing into your elbow and not your hand; washing your hands often with soap and water; and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

For more information please call the Chatham County Health Department at 356-2441.

Savannah Food Day Festival 2013 Well FED

OCTOBER 26TH | DAFFIN PARK | 12-5PM

For the past 2 years in a row, The Savannah Food Day Festival is the largest in the United States!

Each October, The City of Savannah is treated to a large outdoor festival, that is free and open to the public. Attendees are treated to a live concert, featuring many of Savannah’s top musicians. The public is encouraged to bring their own canopy tents, seating or blankets and spend the day taking in the music, browsing the nearly 100 exhibitors and vendors and shopping at the Farmer’s Market. Attendees are also sure to find interest among the two dozen unique and completely free workshops and cooking classes, suitable for everyone, including the kids!

What is Food Day?

Think of it as an Earth Day – for food!

Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. This is a national grassroots mobilization backed by some of the most prominent voices for energizing the food movement. Each year in October, people gather at events big and small and from coast to coast in homes, schools, colleges, churches, city halls, farmers’ markets, supermarkets, and elsewhere to raise awareness about food issues and advocate for change.

Craving Change?

Spearheaded by the nonprofit, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day is organized around 5 priorities:
◾Promote safer, healthier diets
◾Support sustainable and organic farms
◾Reduce hunger
◾Reform factory farms to protect the environment
◾Support fair working conditions for food and farm workers

The 2013 Savannah Food Day Festival is brought to you by Well FED & Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Though the correct pathway can be walked in only 15 minutes, most wandering maze-goers will require about one hour to travel through more than three miles of twists, turns and decision points..
