LEGO Day at The Sandbox Interactive Children’s Museum, Hilton Head Is.

You’re invited to LEGO Day- Read! Play! Build! on Sat. Sept. 1, from 11 am to 3 pm at The Sandbox Interactive Children’s Museum on Hilton Head Is.

Kids can play with all kinds of LEGOs to spark the imagination and creativity in children and bring a fun and interactive story time to children in our area. LEGO DUPLO blocks are perfect for young children between the ages of 2 through 6 years to build creative minds, inspire true imagination, and foster early child literacy.

“LEGO Playmasters” will run games, activities, and even a story time for all of the attendees. Read! Play! Build! is made possible by LEGO DUPLO and ALSC (Association of Library Services to Children). Activities are designed for parents and caregivers to interact and assist their child with the LEGO projects and to stay and enjoy all of the museum’s exhibits and activities.

Leukemia Run for Jane Fort Pulaski 5K & Fun Walk, Free Kids Run & Kids’ Zone

Plan to take part in The Leukemia Cup “Run for Jane,” a 5K Run/Walk and FREE Kids Run held in conjunction with the 2012 St. Joseph’s/Candler Leukemia Cup Regatta Weekend of Events.

This run is the only Savannah run that takes place in a National Park.

It is named in honor of Dr. Jane Philbrick, who is well described by Mr. Paul Hinchey as being a, “very well known educator here in Savannah and a strong community supporter. She was a remarkable person, a consummate professional and had a heart of gold.” The Leukemia Cup is a community coming together through a series of sporting events to help fight leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers, coordinated by the members of the Savannah Yacht Club. The Leukemia Cup Includes: 5K Run / Walk, golf, junior fishing, in-shore fishing, tennis, sailing, clay shoot, black-tie dinner & auction and a Luau for Leukemia. In 1997,The Leukemia Cup began as a Sailing Regatta and has since emerged as a premier series of sporting events benefiting the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

FREE Children’s Ocean Film Festival part of Savannah Ocean Exchange in September 2012

The Savannah Ocean Exchange (SOE) – which celebrates our oceans with over 30 public events in September 2012 – announced today that American Idol Winner Ruben Studdard will headline the International Beach Party on Tybee Island’s North Beach Stage, Saturday, September 15 starting at 6pm. The event is free and open to the public. Studdard will be joined by recording artist Trevor Hall.

The Children’s Ocean Film Festival :  designed for ocean lovers of all ages and especially young students and children – and their parents, of course. Films are an excellent medium for conveying a story or message and each film scheduled for viewing during the 2012 festival will have just that. Everyone comes away with a better understanding of how precious and fragile our world’s Ocean is, and what they can do to become better stewards in protecting it. The entertainment of course is priceless and this event is free and open to the public.

Forsyth Park Family Picnic: On Sunday, September 16, the SOE welcomes families from across the region for a day of celebration in Forsyth Park at The International Ocean Connection Picnic. The picnic will feature the Armed Forces marching band, an array of international cuisine and activities for kids of every age. The event is scheduled to begin at 5pm.

Our search for the lost continent of Atlantis takes us on a journey through the astronomical knowledge and understanding of the ancient Greeks. How did the constellations get their names? What different patterns did ancient cultures see in the sky? Was Atlantis a real place? Did it really sink into the sea? We will uncover clues to help us solve this age-old mystery. Telescopic viewing following / during events weather permitting. The planetarium can seat up to 63 visitors with 2 ADA wheelchair spaces on a first come basis, so please arrive early to get a seat. No strollers please due to fire code safety.

The planetarium is located in the Math/Physics Bldg (#203) on the campus of Georgia Southern University Campus map at: http://www.georgiasouthern.edu/map/

Parking directions for planetarium public events: Turn on to Herty Drive from Fair Road (GA Hwy 67) and follow all the way to the end. Turn left through the open parking gate then right into the large faculty/staff parking lot. Walk back down toward the gates and the planetarium is across on the other side in the Math/Physics Building between the small Eidson Building – Honors (old Alumni House) and the Biology Building.

Free star shows, sky maps, telescopic observing with members of the Statesboro Astronomy Club, weather permitting. The Department of Physics in the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University will be collecting canned and non-perishable food to donate to a local food bank for those in need.

Weekdays – From Herty Drive, turn left on Dorman, and right at the stop sign behind the Math/Physics Building and Russell Union into the Visitor Parking area. Place your visitor parking pass on your dashboard. Look for the blue trash dumpster to the left of the Math/Physics Building and follow the sidewalk behind it up to the single glass door entrance. Parking directions for planetarium public events: Turn on to Herty Drive from Fair Road (GA Hwy 67) and follow all the way to the end. Turn left through the open parking gate then right into the large faculty/staff parking lot. Walk back down toward the gates and the planetarium is across on the other side in the Math/Physics Building between the small Eidson Building – Honors (old Alumni House) and the Biology Building.

Free star shows, sky maps, telescopic observing with members of the Statesboro Astronomy Club, weather permitting. The Department of Physics in the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University will be collecting canned and non-perishable food to donate to a local food bank for those in need.

All mothers of children from birth to kindergarten are invited to join us the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month September through May. Childcare is provided with crafts, games and snacks while moms enjoy the meeting. The first meeting is Sept. 6th from 9:30 to 11:45 AM at Savannah Christian East Campus. RINCON MOPS:

The Rincon MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group will have their annual sign-up on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 10 AM to noon at the Rincon Park in front of the library.  MOPS offers fellowship and encouragement to mothers of children ages birth through kindergarten.  Annual membership dues are $23.95.  Bring your kids with you; snacks will be provided.  For more info. call Esther at 826-0455.
