Free Puppet Show: The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs

    Thursday, April 8th, 2010

true-story-of-3-little-pigsThe Savannah Coastal Puppetry Guild is bringing a wonderful puppeteer from Missouri who is playing At the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta for a month to come to the Savannah Theatre, 222 Bull St.

PAUL MESNER PUPPETS will perform The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by A. Wolf (used with permission of Jon Scieszka) on Tues. April 13. The 1 PM show is FREE and must have reservations (call 912-660-3255). The 4 PM show is $5.

    For more info, call 912-660-3255.

In this revealing no-squealing adaptation of the popular book written by Jon Scieszka’s and illustrated by Lane Smith, A. Wolf has a chance to tell his side of the story. He only wanted a cup of sugar and he did have a cold. For years we have only known this story from the pigs point of view. Mr. A. Wolf tells all about what really happened to those three little houses made of straw, sticks and bricks and the three pigs who lived in them.

Brainy Roger Day Children’s Concert in Savannah this weekend

    Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

rogerday2002Chances are Roger Day is the only children’s musician who has written a song that tells kids what to eat to strengthen their brain.

    Blueberries are what you chew
If you want to elevate your IQ
Folic acid in whole wheat in bread
Now that’s a smart thing to feed your head

“Brain Food – Eat it Up” is one of the many smart tunes on his new album, “Why Does Gray Matter? And Other Brainy Songs for Kids.” Another highlight is the tune “Left Brain/Right Brain,” in which the left brain (logical) is a string quartet and the right brain (creative) is a Clash-inspired punk rock band.

MY RIGHT BRAIN WANTS TO ROCK THE HOUSE
MY RIGHT BRAIN WANTS TO DRAW AND ILLUSTRATE
My left brain follows the directions
It always starts at “a” goes to “z”
My left brain loves to do my taxes
It fills out every form on Schedule C

Day writes and performs interactive music that encourages children to sing and jump along. The two-time winner of a Parents’ Choice Gold Award will perform songs from the album in his family show, “Shake Up Your Brain!,” at 12:30 PM Sat. March 27 at the Charles H. Morris Center in Trustees Garden as part of the Savannah Music Festival. Tickets are $10 adults 18 and older, $5 age 6 and older, under 6 free.  Buy tickets by clicking here.

If last Saturday’s Savannah Music Festival children’s concert The Amazing Musical Rescue with RJ & The Upbeats is any indication, the Roger Day concert is sure to be a fun time where kids can be themselves. The performers and Savannah Music Festival ushers couldn’t have been more patient and relaxed when it came to kids – aka my 1-year-old – who couldn’t sit still or stop blaring the show-provided kazoo. The Savannah Music Festival deserves a round of applause for including family, kid-friendly shows in the series. What better way to show gratitude and support than by attending this Saturday’s Roger Day concert.

Motherhood movie about mom-bloggers released today on DVD, Blu-Ray; win a DVD on SouthernMamas

    Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

motherhood_3dChances are you’re going to like Eliza Welch, a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger played by Uma Thurman in MOTHERHOOD.

The comedy, co-starring Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver, comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray today (Feb. 23) We’re giving away TWO of the DVDs this week. But you have to read this post to the end to find out how to win.

Thurman’s Eliza, an urban, stay-at-home mother of two, makes me want to emulate her, at least a little. I appreciate her lists, her humor and especially her honesty about the paradox of motherhood – that desire to savor every minute of our kids’ fleeting youth while also longing to carve out time for our other ambitions. In Eliza’s case, she wants to be a hands-on mom but she also wants to return to her pre-mom passion: writing.

This film, that premiered at Sundance Film Festival premiere last year,  is perfect to watch after a long week of toddler tantrums and household budget fiascos. You’ll enjoy Eliza’s take on what it really means to be a mother. With the exception of the prince-to-the-rescue ending, MOTHERHOOD is worth watching.  And even more worth winning.

To win a copy this week, comment below. Just tell us how many kids you have. That alone deserves winning something, right? We’ll pick a name at random and announce the winner Fri. Feb. 26.

Islands Dance Academy, the official school of the Savannah Danse Theatre, offers a wide range of classes for all ages in its two-studio facility.

The high school division gives the dancer the opportunity to fully express themselves through performance while rising to the physical and mental demands that becoming a dancer requires.

Ringling Bros. Presents Illuscination invites you on a mystifying adventure as Illuscinator David DaVinci bridges the believable world in which we live, to the seemingly impossible one of the circus.

David entertains audiences with eye-popping illusions, mind boggling transformations, and unique up-close magic. This modern Houdini even attempts to escape a straightjacket while suspended three stories in the air over a den of lions.

In an intimate setting, where the action takes place just feet away from your seat, audience members’ eyes will witness astonishing acrobats, awesome aerialists, and amazing animals, including majestic Asian elephants, a pride of lionesses, horses, ponies, and even a rare white lion.

Ringling Bros. starts the excitement early with a FREE All Access Pre-show, which begins one hour before the show. The audience will have a chance to go onto the arena floor, try on costumes, walk the low wire and meet many of the show’s performers.

Puppet People: Savannah children’s birthday party entertainment

    Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

puppet-people-logoPutting together a fun-filled fest for a troupe of toddlers with high expectations can feel like a tall order for any mom.

Let the team at Angela Beasley’s Puppet People take care of the entertainment. The beloved professionals perform puppet shows, Disney-like face painting or glitter tattoos, and “Mom & Me” puppet making workshops and hat making at the Puppet People Party Place or at any local venue of your choosing.

Parties at the Puppet People Party Place usually involve two hours of organized fun on a fantasy-filled puppet factory. Off-site shows are 30 minutes. Favorite theme parties include Prince/Princess or Mad Hatter Tea Party.

The 1,000-square foot Party Place is complete with a sound system so you can plug in your iPod or bring your own CDs. The party can be extended the backyard, canopied with pecan trees and Spanish moss. You just select a party theme and puppet show from Puppet People’s family-friendly parties section.

An on-site party includes a party host to tend to every need; an interactive studio; music, games and bouncing balls; puppet-making – each guest leaves with their own puppet; tableware.

Anyone who’s seen Puppet People at Savannah events knows these playful puppets deliver! Not surprisingly, Puppet People was named the 2009 Family Choice Award for Best Children’s Birthday Party by Coastal Family Magazine.

Sometimes it pays to go with the professionals.

The Puppet People Party Place is at 3119 Furber Ave. Book your party by calling 912.355.3366 or email puppets@puppetpeople.com. Click here for more info.

Joy to world of fish on skates! Disney on Ice in Savannah

    Friday, November 6th, 2009

nemo-150x209“Joy to the World” will be one of the tunes playing in your head after enjoying Disney On Ice presents Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo.

It’s just one of the Motown hits featured in the ocean adventure of the clownfish Nemo, playing this weekend at Savannah Civic Center . Remaining shows are:
    Sat. Nov 7 @ 11 AM
    Sat. Nov 7 @ 3 PM
    Sat. Nov 7 @ 7 PM
    Sun. Nov 8 @ 2 PM

The show is well-worth braving all those trinket and cotton-candy concession stands, with beg-your-parents-for $15 Nemo hats. But kids quickly lose interest in the goodies once the fish on skates hit the ice.

The production includes all your child’s favorite characters, ever-forgetful Dory, Bruce the shark, the overprotective Marlin, “super-dude” turtle Crush and Nigel the pelican.

Beware, though, there are a few, small fireworks in the first half of the roughly 90-minute show, which temporarily upset a few kids near my family. We saw the show courtesy of Feld Entertainment, the Disney on Ice promoters which provided the recent ticket giveaways on SouthernMamas.

    Tickets are available @ etix.com OR 1-800-351-7469.
