Savannah sponsors low-priced rain barrel and composter sale

March 1st, 2011

Savannah residents can save money, help reduce waste and conserve water by purchasing a low-priced rain barrel or composter. The City’s Water Resources Bureau will be selling 80-gallon composters for $45 and 55-gallon rain barrels for $55. Check and credits cards payment will be accepted, no cash sales. Rain barrels capture stormwater from a home roof and reduce the runoff into tidal creeks and rivers, helping to protect wildlife and water quality. The stored water can be used for watering landscapes and gardens, helping to preserve drinking water. Composters convert organic waste, such as vegetable and fruit scraps, into a nutrient rich soil supplement to help improve growing conditions for a variety of plants. Composters also reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill or the public sewer system via the kitchen sink disposal. For more information, call (912) 651-2221.

For Sherry: An Art Exhibition and Art Auction Benefiting SCAD professor Sherran Deems

February 28th, 2011

Savannah artists and art professors band together in the hopes of relieving some of the financial burdens that art professor Sherran Deems is facing while battling cancer. Several of her friends and co-workers who teach drawing in the foundationʼs department at SCAD have decided to throw an art auction and exhibition hoping to raise enough funds to help Sherran pay for chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well as many other unexpected surgeries and expenses that accompanies many who face such a challenging illness.

Sherran Deems is a single, vibrant, talented, and proud lady, known for her thorough and demanding color theory and drawing curriculum she teaches at the School of Foundations at the Savannah College of Art and Design. When she was first diagnosed with stage 3b cancer, she thought she could fight through her demanding treatments, but soon discovered that she was going to be needing help. And, with family members scattered across the nation, she had to rely on the closest thing she has to family in Savannah; her fellow artists and co-workers.

The art exhibit and art auction is online at www.savannahartistgroup.org  and, on Sun. March 13, at CHROMA GALLERY-31 Barnard St., Savannah, Georgia and ThincSavannah, 35 Barnard St., Suite 301, Savannah, Georgia

The interest in bringing a Gigi’s Cupcakes franchise to Savannah began when owner, Bethany Shantz of Savannah, first tasted these marvelous cupcakes at the original Nashville store. They were the most delicious treats she had ever tasted and she became quite a regular visitor while living in Nashville. Frequenting the store more and more, she started to dream about how fun it would be to be on the other side of the counter as an owner. What a fun, happy, and most delicious job.

Bethany’s family has been living in Savannah for generations and she was thrilled to be able to return to Savannah and bring Gigi’s Cupcakes with her.

Each handmade cupcake is made with the finest and freshest ingredients like Saigon Cinnamon, Madagascar Vanilla, farm fresh creamy butter, hand selected fruits and nuts, along with the smoothest cream cheese. More than seventy custom flavored cupcakes include Lemon Dream Supreme, Hunka Chunka Banana Love, Cookies & Cream, German Sweet Chocolate, Ginger Bread, Carrot Cake, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Birthday Surprise, Chocolate Malts, Kiddie Cake, Tiramisu, Wedding Cake and more. They also offer seasonal menu options.

Gigi’s cupcakes are $3 each or $2.75 each if purchased by the dozen. Each purchase includes a specially designed gift box, making a Gigi’s cupcake the perfect gift. Custom orders are accepted with a 1-day lead time and the exceptional staff is looking forward to customizing your next order for your special event. Sell your children’s outgrown clothes at Little Lambs Spring Consignment Sale

February 28th, 2011

Even the most affluent, shop-happy mom feels a tad guilty spending big bucks on children’s designer boutique brand clothing. After all, the kids are only going to be able to wear that pricey outfit a few times before outgrowing it.

Which is why the whole concept of children’s consignment sales is so comforting, as well as practical. You can splurge on boutique brands for your little ones because you know you can sell the gently-used items at a consignment sale such as the Little Lambs Spring Consignment Sale at First Presbyterian Preschool at 520 Washington Ave., Savannah , 31405 (on the corner of Washington and Paulsen streets in Ardsley Park .)

Dates of the Little Lambs sale are:
Fri., March 11, 2011 9 am-2 pm
Sat., March 12, 2011, 9 am-noon with many items half price

Items for sale include clothing (infants, children and maternity), toys, books, CD’s, baby items (strollers, car seats, boppies, etc) furniture, trikes.

Proceeds benefit First Presbyterian Preschool (a nurturing, friendly school that my children attend and love) as well as Thornwell Presbyterian Home for Children and Savannah Care Center .

If you have items to sell and want to make some money, call the preschool @ 912.351.0609. Leave you name and email address to receive a seller’s instruction packet.
