2013 Savannah Irish Festival

Savannah Irish Festival 2013The 2013 Savannah Irish Festival is February 15-16-17 at the Savannah Civic Center at Montgomery and Oglethorpe Streets in historic downtown Savannah, Ga.

2013 features world-class Irish music from John Doyle, The Cathie Ryan Band, Rathkeltair, The Dardenelles. Savannah’s own Harry O’Donoghue. Dance to the Atlanta Junior Ceili Band and the Savannah Ceili Band. All on four stages of continuous entertainment.

Plenty of Irish Dancing & dozens of vendors of quality Irish, Irish-American and Celtic merchandise.

Food prepared by Savannah’s many Irish heritage organizations. Presentations on Irish and Irish-American culture, literature and history.

Stroll through our romantic city and enjoy the largest Irish Festival in the South!

Also featured are performances by The St. Vincent’s Academy Chorale, Glor na Daire School of Irish Dance, and the Irish Dancers of Savannah.

The Children’s Stage features a free arts and crafts area, bounce houses, face painting, as well as on-going entertainment geared towards children.

The Festival Cultural Stage will provide discussions on various topics of Irish and Irish-American History, Irish Literature and Irish Music.

General Information
The festival begins Friday night Feb. 15 with a Ceili in the Civic Center Ballroom from 6:30pm – 9:00pm. Those who attend the Ceili will be taught how to Irish folk dance in large groups. Saturday Feb. 16 festival hours: 10:15am until 8:00pm. Sunday Feb. 17 festival hours: 12:00pm and run until 7:00pm.

Four stages of continuous entertainment bring fun for the entire family throughout the weekend.

FREE stargazing family event @ Coastal Ga. Botanical Gardens, Savannah

Don’t miss the FREE winter family stargazing event @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens (formerly called The Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens ) in Savannah: Gazing in the Garden!

The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in conjunction with the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association invite you to a night of stargazing in the Garden. Saturday Feb. 16 2013 Dusk-10 PM. Telescopes will be set up for observation, but you are welcome to bring your own. Free & open to the public.

Before the star-gazing, you’re also invited to a free showing of the 1953 classic movie, “It Came From Outer Space” at 6pm in the Annex and stargazing afterward on the Great Lawn. Free and open to the public. This is a great family event!

Sibshop – for siblings for children with special needs, Savannah

The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism will be hosting a Sibshop on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 from 10am-2pm at The Chatham Academy.

This Sibshop is a FUN interactive workshop for kids ages 8-13 who have a sibling with special needs.

Limited Space available. The cost of the workshop is $10 and includes all materials and lunch. There are a limited amount of scholarships available on a first come, first serve basis.

This is an extra special opportunity since this workshop will be led by Don Meyer, the founder of Sibshops. This will serve as a demonstratioin workshop for professionals who are learning to plan and facilitate their own Sibshops. The Matthew Reardon Center is very excited to be learning from him and to host more Sibshops in our area in the future.

Lunch will be provided to the kids during the Sibshop. If your child has a food allergy or dietary restrictions it may be best for them to bring a lunch from home.

Come for a story time followed by a related arts and crafts project. Each month features a fun and unique theme and is geared for children age 5 and under; siblings and guests are welcome as well. Classes are designed for parents and caregivers to interact and assist their child with the art project and everyone is encouraged to stay and play in the museum following the program.

The Imagination Hour program cost is included in the museum admission fee and in the Family Membership annual fee. Come each week and have fun learning about a variety of subjects ranging from nature, recycling, nursery rhymes, health and wellness, and science.

Groundhog Day is a comedy directed by Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. Murray plays Phil Connors, an egocentric TV weatherman who is told to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney. Annoyed with the assignment, he gives a sarcastic report and tries to leave, but a blizzard keeps him and the news crew stuck in town. He finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again. After indulging in hedonism and numerous suicide attempts, he begins to re-examine his life and priorities.

In 2006, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Pre-K Lottery Applications for the 2013-2014 school year at Savannah-Chatham public schools will be available at Savannah-Chatham school sites and online on February 25, 2013. The deadline to submit the application is March 22, 2013.

The FREE Georgia pre-k program is a full-day program available at some public and private schools.

To participate in the Pre-K Program, children must be four years of age* on or before September 1, 2013, and must be a resident of Chatham County.

In order to apply for the lottery, parents must provide the following documentation to the school prior to the March 22, 2013 deadline:

Proof of Residence (current gas, water, electric bill, or lease)
Certified Birth Certificate
*Five-year-old children who have not previously attended the Pre-K program and who have developmental delays that impact their readiness for school may also enroll at the request of their parents.

Registration

After your child is selected in the lottery, you will have until 5/3/2013 to register your child. After that date, schools begin calling children from the Wait List.

If your child is on the Wait List and you are contacted about an open space, you will have 48 hours to register your child. After that time, schools call the next child on the Wait List.

Parents must provide the following documentation at registration:

Proof of Residence (current gas, water, electric bill, or lease)
Certified Birth Certificate
GA Certificate of Immunization (Form 3231)
GA Ear, Eye and Dental Certificate (EED)
Social Security Card

Pre-K classes @ Savannah-Chatham public schools

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has 59 Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K classes with additional classes at Coastal Empire Montessori. The Pre-Kindergarten program provides services to age eligible four year olds (must be four years of age on or before September 1 of the school year) residing in Chatham County. Our program provides a full day (6.5 hours) of appropriate instructional services to students for the regular school calendar year. The purpose of the Pre-K Program is school readiness and transition to Kindergarten for success in later school years.

With the exception of our two Montessori schools, all of our classes use the High Scope Curriculum. All teachers are certified with at least a four-year degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education. Teachers provide instructional activities and learning experiences in the areas of language/literacy, math, art, science, social studies and creative expressions. There is a minimum of 5.0 hours of instruction per day. The remaining hours (1.5) of the instructional day includes rest/nap, meals and outside play. Field trips are an integral part of the Pre-K experience.

A maximum of twenty-two (22) students receive services in each class. More information about the Georgia Lottery funded Pre-kindergarten Program can be obtained by going to www.decal.ga.gov .

Parking and Road Closures:

Visitors are advised to be aware of road closures for Mardi Gras Tybee. There will be no through traffic or parking on Butler Avenue from 15th Street to Izlar Avenue from 6am-8pm on Saturday, February 9th. Visitors will be directed to both the 14th Street and 16th Street lots through 14th street and Butler Avenue with exits via 17th Street to Jones Avenue (there will be no traffic access to these lots during the parade 2pm-3pm).

Among the Super Museum Sunday activities at various museums will be: Dave’s Reptiles featured at “Super Museum Sunday” on Feb. 10, 12-4 at the Savannah-Ogeechee Canal Museum, 681 Ft. Argyle Rd., 2.3 mi. past I-95. Also Urbanna Farms, Ann & Howard’s Plants, Canal History & Birdwatching Tours, Food & Craft Sales. Free and open to the public. Dave’s Reptiles” is a kid-friendly program and will appeal to all ages, but older kids will also enjoy the tours.
