On Sunday, Feb. 25 2018, Massie Heritage Center in Savannah will offer FREE admission from noon-4PM for visitors to explore Savannah’s Black Heritage.

This is a family-friendly event featuring the following activities for all ages:
* Take a “Journey on the Underground Railroad,” during an interactive story-telling event.
* Find clues throughout the museum to complete a “Scavenger Hunt.”
* Discover “Enslavement to Emancipation: The Struggle for Education,” during a guided exhibit experience featuring Old Savannah Tour’s Susie King Taylor.
* Visit the Historic Preservation exhibit for an informal curatorial talk on the legacy of WW Law as well as Hermitage Plantation.

Create a fun and memorable keepsake of your own hand.

This activity for families, friends, and individuals is the perfect way to create a personalized sculpture. Using quick-setting, skin-safe materials, participants will make molds of their hands resulting in highly detailed, colorful, and expressive plaster casts. The process takes about an hour.

Spend night in Ga’s oldest brick fort @ Old Fort Jackson Family Campover 2018, Savannah

Spend the night in Georgia’s oldest brick fort and experience history firsthand!

Registration is now open for the 2018 Old Fort Jackson Family Campover, the annual event for families to experience historic programs and family fun in a 210-year-old National Historic Landmark. The event will be Fri. March 9, 5PM through Sat. March 10 at 9AM at Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA 31404.

Check-in and tent set up will begin at 4PM and dinner will be served at 6:45PM. That night, guests will participate in historic military activities, play period appropriate games, make crafts, and drill on multiple stations throughout the fort.

The next morning campers will rise, pack up their gear, enjoy a hot breakfast, and participate in the event closing ceremonies. Preregistration and prepayment are required and tickets are $65 for children ages 4 to 15 years of age. Tickets: $45 for adults 16 years of age and older. Event tickets can be purchased online here. 

A limited number of historic tents and bunks are available to reserve. Register today to claim your tents and camping spots!

Coastal Heritage Society’s five Savannah museums will participate in Georgia History Festival’s s Super Museum Sunday 2018  on Feb. 11 2018. Guests can enjoy interactive exhibits and engaging tours at each site through hands-on, immersive activities that illustrate the narratives of Savannah’s past.

Coastal Heritage sites include:

Cost: FREE! These will be free Sun. Feb. 11 during normal hours of operation at each site.

Highlights of this year’s special event programming include site tours, special office car tours and a short train ride at Georgia State Railroad Museum. Guests can enjoy enhanced Revolutionary War programming at Savannah History Museum, free play and children’s activities at Savannah Children’s Museum, learn about military history and view weapons demonstrations at Old Fort Jackson, and discover Gullah/Geechee culture through guided walking tours at Pin Point Heritage Museum.

Over sixty cultural institutions participate in this annual free family event. Each year Georgians and visitors alike experience our state’s rich history and cultural life through historic sites, house museums, art museums, and other points of interest in Savannah during “Super Museum Sunday.”

Savannah Children’s Museum will host Seuss Fest, a Dr. Seuss-themed event on Sat. Feb. 24 10AM-4PM to celebrate the fun & whimsical world of Dr. Seuss.

Museum educators will lead the group with Seuss stories, games & activities. Highlights include a “Seuss Science Station,” a “Save the Trees Station with The Lorax” & a “Seusstastic Selfie Station,” complete with costumes & props.

Community partners will provide Seuss-filled fun throughout the day. The Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah will have an interactive game; the University of Georgia Marine Extension & Georgia Sea Grant will lead an activity; Savannah Children’s Theatre will share performances throughout the day.

FREE PULSE Art & Technology Festival

One of Telfair Museums’ most exciting events, the PULSE Art + Technology Festival, returns for its twelfth year with artworks highlighting virtual and augmented reality, engaging lectures and performances and a special film screening that celebrates women in engineering.

This interactive and wildly inventive event for all ages, PULSE takes place at the Jepson Center from January 17-21, 2018.

PULSE will include an evening focused on STEAM education with a free, all-ages screening of the new documentary film Dream Big, which highlights female engineers making the world a better place.

Avery Bang, a distinguished engineer featured in the film, will participate in a question and answer panel after the screening. Elementary through college-age students can also enjoy two free morning programs of exciting presentations and dialogue with creatives working in tech fields from VR to coding and video games.

PULSE kids’ highlights include:

Thurs. Jan. 18, 6PM: FREE Screening & lecture: Dream Big: Engineering Our World and panel discussion with Avery Bang, sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers and Tharpe Engineering Group. Free admission.

Sat. Jan. 20, 1–4PM: Chatham County Free Family Day/STEAM Expo/2PM Virtual Reality Performance by The Glad Scientist.

All PULSE events are free to students with valid student IDs and Chatham County residents with proof of residency, except for the opening night lecture and performance (which are free to museum members, $8 admission for non-members). Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight @ Davenport House Museum, Savannah will be offered Dec. 26-30 2017, 6-8:30PM.

The house museum will be open for evening tours exploring the December celebrations of the early 19th century inhabitants of the fine brick home on Columbia Square.

Topics will include the meaning of the season, feasting, the Scottish influence on the family, festive attire, treatment of household slaves during holiday time, etc.

The Dining Room table will be set for an intimate adult meal for the New Year’s Day celebration and the Drawing Room will be set as if preparing for a dance. Conversations will spotlight music and festive treats including cakes, jellies and syllabub.

Docents will don authentic early 19th century costume.

A demonstration of early 19th century dance will end the program each evening

The experience requires that guests be able to walk up and down stairs and maneuver in the candlelit rooms.

Festivities include special games and activities both indoors and outdoors. In addition to scavenger hunts, games, fun arts & crafts and a picnic lunch, attendees will ring in 2018 with party favors and a balloon drop at 12 noon.

Savannah Santa Train Christmas Holidays 2017 Coastal Heritage Society

Tickets are now available for one of the largest annual holiday events of the Lowcountry: Savannah Santa Train 2017.

Savannah Santa Train will be Sat. Dec. 9, 2017, 9AM-5PM @ Georgia State Railroad Museum, 655 Louisville Rd., Savannah.

Tickets: $15 per person for all guests eighteen months & older. Pre-registration is required at chsgeorgia.org/santa-train. Train rides are available every twenty minutes, so please select a time to reserve your spot. Activities-only tickets are also available for guests who do not wish to ride the train.

Visitors can purchase a gourmet grilled cheese from The Big Cheese food truck and have a sweet treat for dessert from Leopold’s Ice Cream.

Savannah Santa Train guests are invited to do some holiday shopping for unique, fun and educational gifts in the Georgia State Railroad Museum gift shop. On Sat. Dec. 9 there will a 15% discount on all merchandise.

The family-friendly Old Fort Jackson Annual Auction will be Sat. Nov. 4, 6-10PM.

Guests can enjoy beautiful views of the Savannah River, a silent auction featuring many unique, high quality items, artillery and musket demonstrations by costumed historical interpreters and delicious cuisine provided by Creative Catering.

“The Old Fort Jackson Annual Auction is the perfect way for the community to help protect a National Historic Landmark that once protected the city of Savannah during the War of 1812 and the American Civil War,” said Jennifer Rouse, Site Administrator at Old Fort Jackson. “The money raised from this fundraiser will directly support Old Fort Jackson and will help support daily educational programming as well as special events.”

Old Fort Jackson is the oldest standing brick fort in the state of Georgia and one of only five remaining Second System coastal brick fortifications in the United States. The site is solely reliant upon admissions and donations from community supporters to continue operating as a public historic site.

The Annual Auction will have dozens of highly sought after items for guests to bid on, including a pair of Atlanta Movie Tour tickets valued at $130, a baseball autographed by Atlanta Braves Outfielder Ender Inciarte, a two-night say at Tybee Vacation Rentals valued at $500, four Park Hopper passes to Walt Disney World valued at $648 and a Progressive Paddle Board valued at $800.

Admission to this event is FREE. A lowcountry boil and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are available for an additional fee. This event is made possible by generous support from: Kinder Morgan.
