Just for Baby & More will host infant CPR course

    Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

just-for-baby-new-ad-addressJust for Baby & More offers more than nursery and youth furniture, apparel, gifts and accessories.

The locally-owned and operated store at 7701 Waters Ave. also hosts occassional classes including an infant CPR course in their store 10 AM-2 PM Sat., Nov. 14

If an emergency strikes, your first line of defense is to rely on your abilities to save the life of your child. You need to be prepared. One way you can do this is by getting trained in Infant CPR. For nearly a century, the American Red Cross has prepared people to save lives through health and safety education and training. Just for Baby & More – a sponsor of SouthernMamas – recognizes this great need to help those with children lead healthier and safer lives.

The class is open to the public. Cost: $35 per person or $60 per couple. Class fee includes instructional manual, supplies, certification card and a light lunch. To participate, email casey@justforbaby.net or call (912)355-4455 to register.

CPR is a simple and very effective lifesaving technique training lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in infants. Make sure you are familiar with the procedure as you never know when you may need to use it.

Savannah violin and piano lessons for children and teens

    Friday, October 2nd, 2009

kelly-burke-button-ad-finalLearning to play a musical instrument can bring great joy and endless hours of pleasure to a child, but research shows its benefits go far beyond the enjoyment factor.

Musical instruction instills in students the habits of mind that last a lifetime: critical analysis skills, the ability to solve problems and deal with ambiguity, perseverance and the drive for excellence. In short, skills for a classroom and for a lifetime.

Kelly Burke of Burke Music Studio in Savannah has been developing those skills among young people in Savannah for over 25 years as both a violin and piano teacher and a private school administrator.

“I had wonderful teachers who understood the importance of combining classical training with lots of opportunities for playing fun, popular music that I recognized and loved,” says Kelly. She uses this same approach with her students to keep them motivated and develop self confidence. Whether dressing up in costumes for a Halloween Master class or playing Christmas songs in a candlelight recital in Bethesda’s Chapel, students have many opportunities to perform, have fun and form friendships with other student/musicians.

violinKelly enjoys teaching girls and boys, but as a long-time principal of boys’ schools, she has a special appreciation for working with young men. “It can be difficult to find a teacher who understands boys’ unique attributes and channel that into good music-making.”

In addition to teaching school-age boys and girls, Kelly often works with teenagers, particularly those who are currently attending or are interested in attending a magnet academy. Many of her seniors prepare a recording of their playing to include with their college applications, even if they are not pursuing a degree in music. “Giving evidence of the ability to play a musical instrument demonstrates to college admissions offices that a student has self-discipline, motivation, and a creative nature. This sets their application apart.”

To get your child started on the road to the many benefits of musical instruction visit Burke Music Studio by clicking here or call 912.398.7280.

Parent-tot group rich with Waldorf wisdom

    Saturday, February 28th, 2009

waldorf-playroom.jpgWe’re often too busy to savor the beauty of being a mom and spending time with our kids. A Waldorf-inspired parent-tot program on Tybee Island helps moms slow down for a few hours each week and appreciate our role while our children enjoy creative play, meaningful imitation and oral learning.

The parent-tot program for toddlers, ages 1 to 4, is in the home of Bridget Lawson, who is Waldorf-schooled and trained. Tots and moms bake bread; watch puppet shows in Bridget’s sun-dappled playroom, equipped with Waldorf wooden toys (and pictured here); engage in crafts, morning circle time, story, outdoor play; and enjoy an organic morning snack.

Tots even grind the wheat to make the bread, as pictured below.

My son and I are relishing Bridget’s first session, which has two more classes, 9:30-11:30 Fri. March 6 & March 13. We drive away from each program feeling happy and renewed, with our bag of fresh wheat rolls we made together.  The next session starts Fri. March 27 and will run for eight weeks ending on Fri. May 15.

waldorf-grinding-wheat-for-bread.jpgBeginning the week of March 9 is a separate four-week Waldorf-inspired parent-infant program for infants ages 6 weeks to 10 months.  The Nurtured Newborns Class at Bridget’s home will include observation and discussion of infant behavior, simple circle games and lullabies, snack for the parents and a sharing of insights from recommended study books.

For registration and cost info. on either program, call 413.575.5338.

The aim of Waldorf is to produce lifelong learners and teach through movement and example.

In the past 20 years, Waldorf has become the largest private-school movement in the world, according to Mothering magazine. Waldorf methods are now being taken up by a growing number of homeschooling families and public charter and magnet schools nationally.

Mon. Feb. 23 is deadline to register for swim classes

    Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

star_fish-2.jpgA new session of Starfish Swim School children’s classes starts in March at The Chatham County Aquatic Center. Registration deadline is this Mon. Feb. 23.

A variety of classes are offered, including Starbabies for ages 6 months to 36 months. That class helps such very young children develop a high comfort level in the water while at the same time training parents in water safety. My son has taken several Starbabies sessions and loves it.

The goal isn’t to get toddlers to do the butterfly stroke, but to get them comfortable putting their face in the water, kicking, blowing bubbles and sometimes even learning how to climb out of the pull and jump in.

One parent must be in the water with each child. Be prepared for lots of singing (”Splashes. Splashes. We all blow bubbles….”) Starbabies sessions offered include Tuesdays/Thursdays or Saturdays. Click here for a schedule.

    aqua_tot4.jpgOther classes include:

SeaSprites for ages 3-5: swim skills through creative water activities.
    SeaStars for ages 6-8: core swimming skills and the opportunity to progress to advanced strokes;
SwimStars for ages 9 and older: swimming skills, water safety, water sports and adventure learning activities.
StrokeStars for any age that meets the skills requirement: refine freestyle and learn stroke technique for backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and more.

Classes cost $50 for non members and $38 for members. Call 912.652.6793. Learn more by clicking here. The Chatham County Aquatic Center is @ 7420 Sallie Mood
