City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs is now registering students for Session IV classes and workshops.

Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens, and adults in all skill levels. Sessions began September 9 and run through October 18 and are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs studios located at 9 W. Henry Street.

Three-week and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops. Visual arts class mediums include ceramics, glass, metalsmithing and painting and drawing. New this session are Intro to Lapidary Stone Cutting Workshop, Mixed Media in a Series Workshop, Children’s Artwork 2D/3D, Beginning Lapidary, and Ceramics Surface Design Sampler.

Telfair Museums will host a free Family Day at the Jepson Center as part of its monthly Family Days series, which is free and open to the public.

This month’s theme is “Near East Family Day” and celebrates the art of countries and cultures represented in the “Allure of the Near East” exhibition, which opens at the Jepson Center on August 16. Families will enjoy hands-on activities, storytelling and a performance by TURKU, a popular band described as “Nomads of the Silk Road.”

Family Day is sponsored by the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs, Georgia Power and the AGL Resources Foundation.

TURKU’s high-energy performance will feature musical traditions from Turkey, Persia, Kurdistan, Caucasus and the Balkans, blending authentic historical songs with traditional improvisational techniques.

Families are also invited to attend a Pre-Family Day Workshop, which will take place in the morning and focus on making shadow puppets, marbleizing paper and piecing together a carpet puzzle. Reservations are required. Please call 912.790.8823 to RSVP.

The City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs and the Savannah Asian Festival Committee present the 18th Annual Savannah Asian Festival on June 22, 2013 at the Savannah Civic Center from 11a.m. – 5p.m.

This one day event will feature an entire continent of unique cultures, cuisines, performances, fun and educational workshops.

Festival attendees can enjoy free, live stage performances by Lee’s Taekwondo, Namaste Savannah, Sanggar Lestari Indonesian Performing Group and the Matsuriza Taiko Drummers. A new addition to this year’s festival is the chair stacking Flying Dragon Acrobats and Vida Vongsay & Team Lion Dancers. The Asian Festival will be hosted by reality star Chef, Host, and Restaurateur, Orchid Paulmeier.

Several local restaurants will be presenting a selection of regional favorites from India, Philippines, Japan and China.

The festival will also feature martial arts demonstrations, children’s workshops and a Middle Eastern tea workshop.

The Cultural Marketplace will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn more about each country and discover traditional arts, crafts, fashions and treasures exclusive to each nation.

The Savannah Asian Festival is free courtesy of the City of Savannah. The festival takes place Saturday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Savannah Civic Center, located at Montgomery and Liberty streets. Parking at the Civic Center is free for the day.

There is a charge for food and purchases from the Cultural Marketplace.

We checked out The Savannah Children’s Theatre  main-stage production of “A Year With Frog and Toad” this past weekend & fell in love.

This musical is truly a sweet & simple treat that children will love. It includes a variety of animal characters (mouse, turtle, lizard, birds plus a very funny snail) along with, of course, the stars of the show, the two great friends —  cheerful Frog & grumpy Toad.

Take your kids to see this cast of adults & youth bring to life this whimsical Broadway musical which follows Arnold Lobel’s well-loved Frog & Toad through four seasons.

The lively production includes a you’ll-want-to-buy-the-soundtrack score, performed live by the Savannah Children’s Theatre orchestra.

Seeing this fun show with your kids is the perfect way to start your summer.
