About the book

A Gift from Greensboro (for ages 5 & older) is at once an elegy, a celebration of the magic of childhood friendship and adventure, and a meditation on growing up in the wake of the sit-ins that ushered in the Civil Rights Movement. Paired with Skip Hill’s intricate, brimming-with-life illustrations, this poem recognizes that true friendship knows no boundaries, and this is the true gift from Greensboro.

Jacqueline Woodson, winner of the Coretta Scott King and Newbery Honor Award, calls A Gift from Greensboro, “An elegant, important story—lovingly and beautifully told.”
