Drawing Portfolio Builder Camp

This four-day camp is designed to help upper-elementary and middle school students improve their drawing skills and begin the process of developing a portfolio. Students will focus on measurement, proportion, perspective, and use of value to create volume and space. The camp will also include practice portraiture and sketching from clothed models.

The Drawing Portfolio Builder Camp is a great class for students to learn and advance the skills necessary for developing art portfolios.

This intensive, weeklong program focuses on black-and-white and digital photography, as well as the basic functions of 35mm manual cameras. While instructors emphasize the advancements of digital media and Adobe Photoshop, they will also cover conventional methods of film photography, including pinhole cameras, to supplement the experience.

The camp features student use of both manual and digital cameras. The program will culminate with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ work in the Jepson Center.

Raising STEAM: Technology, Art, and Electronics
For ages 10–12

This comprehensive STEAM Camp gives young people the opportunity to explore the artistic potential of technology. In this weeklong camp, students will learn to use a variety of technologies and methods to create and express themselves.

Students will explore 3D printing, create images with Adobe Photoshop, and solder their own electronic-noise toys. Participants will also learn basic computer programming with Arduino microcontrollers. The program culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’work in the Jepson Center.

Each day, this camp will feature a different local artist providing a unique lesson based on his or her medium. Lunch in Telfair Square (weather permitting), breaks and games in ArtZeum, and special tours of the galleries are all included. Students will learn to give constructive criticism on their own and their peers’ artwork. The program culminates with a student art exhibition and a reception in the Jepson Center.

Stave off summer doldrums! Exploring Telfair Museums’ three sites and exhibitions has never been so much fun. Each day, participants will tour a new exhibit and learn to create the very same types of art seen in the galleries. Find inspiration with instruction in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students immerse themselves in innovative arts lessons taught by professional artists.

The Ultimate Crafty Kids Camp is packed with a variety of projects: screen printing, knitting, friendship bracelets, calligraphy folder paper, and much more. This summer camp teaches beginning students how to create their own video game using Scratch, a colorful programming environment that makes it easy to bring interactive stories to life. Spend the night in Georgia’s oldest brick fort and experience history firsthand!

Registration is now open for the 2018 Old Fort Jackson Family Campover, the annual event for families to experience historic programs and family fun in a 210-year-old National Historic Landmark. The event will be Fri. March 9, 5PM through Sat. March 10 at 9AM at Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA 31404.

Check-in and tent set up will begin at 4PM and dinner will be served at 6:45PM. That night, guests will participate in historic military activities, play period appropriate games, make crafts, and drill on multiple stations throughout the fort.

The next morning campers will rise, pack up their gear, enjoy a hot breakfast, and participate in the event closing ceremonies. Preregistration and prepayment are required and tickets are $65 for children ages 4 to 15 years of age. Tickets: $45 for adults 16 years of age and older. Event tickets can be purchased online here.

The Young Author Project, Deep Center’s introductory program, engages public middle school students with language & their stories to help them express themselves with skill, confidence & courage.

Twice a year, Deep Center releases anthologies featuring original, vivid &  fearless stories, poems & plays written by Deep’s young authors—Savannah-Chatham public middle school students in Deep’s Young Author Project.

Select young authors are chosen by their peers to read their published works at Deep Speaksthe Youth Author Project’s end-of-semester book launch & live reading in front of a live audience of about 500  family members, peers & community members from all over Savannah.

Come hear these literary works.

Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors open at 6PM. The readings will start promptly at 6:30PM.

Flannery O'Connor 2015 Parade & Street FairYou’re invited to a FREE lively annual celebration of acclaimed author and Savannah native Flannery O’Connor – the Flannery O’Connor Annual Birthday Parade & Street Fair – Sun. 1-4PM March 25 2018 in LaFayette Square in Savannah’s Historic District.

Free family fun, live music and more near the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home, located at 207 E. Charlton St. Featuring live music, a wacky parade, coffee/tea/cake, and more. Local authors will present their writings and vendors will share vintage, custom, a creatively crafted wares. Another favorite: chicken-poop bingo for kids.

The parade starts at 3PM.

Attendees are invited to walk in the parade, bring handmade signs and sing along. Live music throughout the event will be provided by a cavalcade of singer-songwriters and musicians from some of Savannah’s finest local bands. Music for the parade will be played by an all-star line up of the Sweet Thunder Strolling Band.

Costumes inspired by Flannery O’Connor characters, settings or the author’s life are encouraged but optional.

You’ll also be welcomed to visit the Flannery O’Connor Home free to get a sense for our Flannery’s Depression-era childhood. Photo-ops with a gorilla, a peacock bandshell, and throughout the home will be available.

No Tara Feis 2018

Tara Feis – the beloved annual free St. Patrick’s festival in Savannah – will not happen this year because the City of Savannah decided not to fund it in this year’s budget.

The non-alcoholic family-friendly festival in Emmett Park was the kick-off of Savannah St. Patrick Day festivities for the past 26 years and took place the Saturday before the parade.

WTOC-TV reported the city was cutting funds for Tara Feis earlier this month.

“This is in no way the city of Savannah saying that Tara Feis is not a great event. It is the city of Savannah saying that we can no longer be in the festival business,” said City of Savannah Public Information Officer, Michelle Gavin is quoted as saying on wtoc.com. “The city has to stick with this new strategic plan and really focus on that and commit the funding to those priorities.”

Savannah Children’s Museum will host Seuss Fest, a Dr. Seuss-themed event on Sat. Feb. 24 10AM-4PM to celebrate the fun & whimsical world of Dr. Seuss.

Museum educators will lead the group with Seuss stories, games & activities. Highlights include a “Seuss Science Station,” a “Save the Trees Station with The Lorax” & a “Seusstastic Selfie Station,” complete with costumes & props.

Community partners will provide Seuss-filled fun throughout the day. The Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah will have an interactive game; the University of Georgia Marine Extension & Georgia Sea Grant will lead an activity; Savannah Children’s Theatre will share performances throughout the day.

No Tara Feis in Savannah for St. Patrick’s

Tara Feis – the beloved annual free St. Patrick’s festival in Savannah – will not happen again this year because the city of Savannah did not to fund it in this year’s budget.

The non-alcoholic family-friendly festival in Emmet Park was the kick-off of Savannah St. Patrick Day festivities for 26 years and took place the Saturday before the parade.

WTOC-TV reported the city was cutting funds for Tara Feis in 2018. The city did not fund the festival again for 2019.

“This is in no way the city of Savannah saying that Tara Feis is not a great event. It is the city of Savannah saying that we can no longer be in the festival business,” said City of Savannah Public Information Officer, Michelle Gavin is quoted as saying on wtoc.com in 2018. “The city has to stick with this new strategic plan and really focus on that and commit the funding to those priorities.”

Savannah City Manager Rob Hernandez has changed the way the city awards funds for events such as Tara Feis and the Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Forsyth Park, which has also been cancelled after 14 years.

FREE PULSE Art & Technology Festival, Savannah 

One of Telfair Museums’ most exciting events, the PULSE Art + Technology Festival, returns for its twelfth year with artworks highlighting virtual and augmented reality, engaging lectures and performances and a special film screening that celebrates women in engineering.

This interactive and wildly inventive event for all ages, PULSE takes place at the Jepson Center from January 17-21, 2018.

PULSE will include an evening focused on STEAM education with a free, all-ages screening of the new documentary film Dream Big, which highlights female engineers making the world a better place.

Avery Bang, a distinguished engineer featured in the film, will participate in a question and answer panel after the screening. Elementary through college-age students can also enjoy two free morning programs of exciting presentations and dialogue with creatives working in tech fields from VR to coding and video games.

PULSE kids’ highlights include:
