Savannah Rotary Read-In 2020

The Rotary Club of Savannah needs volunteers to serve as community readers for the third annual Savannah Rotary Read-In on Wed. March 25 9-10:30AM to about 640 Savannah-Chatham public school classes. The event aims to improve literacy by encouraging the desire to read more.

Readers bring a new hardcover book and read it to their assigned class and interact with their students for about one hour. At the completion of your assigned time, you donate your book to the class library. You don’t have to be a rotary member to participate.

A retired trucking company owner, Frank Moore Jr. of Savannah co-chairs this year’s read-in along with Nina Gompels .

“Savannah Rotary Read-In (SRRI) has been so successful in our community over the last two years due to the over 600 volunteers that invest just a few hours of their time reading to our youngest, most vulnerable students,’’ Moore said.

“By investing only a few hours, a volunteer will be part of the solution to turn the tide on our nationwide problem of declining literacy,” Moore said.

Moore believes improving literacy is an absolute necessity for our students and a cornerstone for their successful education.

“It is a responsibility for all members of our community to promote literacy,’’ Moore said.
