Fall 2016 Savannah art workshops for kids include improv, weaving, pottery

Savannah art improv youth classes Fall 2016

Register now for The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Fall Visual Arts classes and Workshops.

Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Classes begin September 12 and run through October 21. All classes and workshops are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.

Four and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops.  Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, printmaking and fibers.  New this session are Improv classes for youth and adults as well as Glass Beads and Jewelry, Printmaking Three Ways, Hand Embroidery, Mold Making, and Slipcasting.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required.  Credit cards are accepted.

Youth Classes & Workshops

Performance:
Improv for Kids (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: John Brennan
Ages 8-12
Tuesdays, September 13 – October 18, 3:30pm – 5:00pm
This six-week class introduces Savannah’s Improv Company (SiC) method to create improvised scenes based on audience suggestions. Students in “Intro to Improv” will participate in group games and exercises that help everyone remember how to play. The focus will be on having fun and learning how to start an improv scene. As a bonus, you’ll get to perform for friends and family during a recital after the six-week course concludes.
$75/$70 city residents

Fibers
Hand Embroidery (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: Mary Bass
Ages 12+
Tuesdays, September 13 – October 18, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Join this class and explore the art of hand embroidery! All levels welcome to participate. This course will cover the fundamentals of hand embroidery, a variety of techniques and different stiches. Students will learn the basics of embroidery and decorate an item of their choice.
$90/$85 city residents

Hand Weaving (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: Mary Bass
Ages 12+
Wednesdays, September 14 – October 19, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Learn to hand weave from start to finish! Students will learn how to create their own weaving board and will work with a variety of fiber materials. The course will cover basic hand weaving techniques on a cardboard loom and students to create a small bag, a stuffed animal, or a decorative pillow.
$90/$85 city residents

Ceramics
Children’s Clay (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 8-12
Tuesdays, September 13 – October 18, 3:30pm – 4:30pm
This introductory clay class will teach young students the fundamentals of hand building and sculpture. Students will work with coils and slabs and a variety of glazes.
$55/50 city residents

Teen Wheel (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 13+
Thursdays, September 15 – October 20, 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Welcome all potential teen potters! During this six-week course, we will explore the potter’s wheel as well as hand building and sculpture techniques.
$85/$80 city residents.

Show Up.  Have Fun. is excited to offer this program for ALL 1st – 6th grade students. This program is with one of the Savannah area’s most beloved teachers, Corinna Rezzelle at The Jewel Conservatory Theatre.

Parents will watch the Jewel’s production of The Emperor’s New Clothes and attend a Talkback Session/Q&A along with their children.  Parents can then sign their children in for the Theatre Workshop at 5:30 PM and return to pick them up when it ends at 6:30 PM.

The schedule for this event is as follows:

  • 3:45 PM – Check in at the theatre with Shylah from “Show Up.  Have Fun.”  (parents and children together)
  • 4:00 PM – Watch the Jewel Conservatory Theatre’s production of The Emperor’s New Clothes (parents and children together)
  • 5:00 PM – Talkback Session/Q&A with the director and cast of the show (parents and children together)
  • 5:30 PM – Theatre Workshop with Corinna Rezzelle (Parents may leave after signing their children in for the workshop at 5:30 PM and pick children up when the workshop ends at 6:30 PM)

The Theatre Workshop with Corinna Rezzelle will include warm-ups, theatre games, and scene study using scenes from The Emperor’s New Clothes.  Snacks will be provided.

TEMBER’S TALES TheaTricks summer camp 2015 in Richmond Hill offers beginning drama and magic students the opportunity to explore hidden talents, improve communication skills and ignite their imagination.

Through theatre games and activities, campers learn improvisation, pantomime, puppetry, dancing, & stage movement. The kids will work with costumes and puppets as well as being involved in short skits, shows, and a readers theater.

Boys and girls ages 8-11 who want to learn amazing feats of magic and illusion can now experience an exciting interactive hands-on program! Kids can learn card tricks, sleights of hand, misdirection, coin magic , rope tricks, mind reading games, improve skills, performing tips, stage movement, voice, storytelling, acting, scripting, eye-hand coordination, and multi-task thinking.

Mrs. Tember’s Drama and Magic Camp boosts self-confidence, and helps kids overcome shyness with an ability to entertain and make new friends. It’s a camp full of costumes, puppets, make up, MAGIC and more.
