Special Benefit for Ailing Local Musician Keith Kozel

This special screening is a benefit for area musician, songwriter, new father, and longtime Vinnie Van Go-Go’s employee Keith Kozel (frontman for Savannah rock bands Superhorse and GAM), who, despite an extremely healthy lifestyle was diagnosed five years ago with Type 2 MPGN, a degenerative kidney disease.

After a debilitating stroke and over 20 visits to both the Mayo Clinic and Emory Hospital, both of his kidneys are now in the final stages of failure. Keith has been forced to leave his job and now requires dialysis to survive.

He is in desperate need of a kidney transplant, but insurance will only cover a tiny fraction of the approximately $350,000 required for such a procedure.

This screening is the first in a series of public fundraisers for Keith. 100% of all proceeds from both voluntary donations at the door –you may give whatever you can– and raffle tickets (for valuable items to be given away before the show) will go straight to his ongoing medical expenses.

Keith is the husband of Carrie Christian, owner of Scribble Art Studio in Savannah/Pooler. They have a 1-year-old daughter, Zelia.

Admission is free, with a suggested voluntary donation of at least $5 for kids and $10 for adults — 100% of which goes directly to Keith’s medical fund.

Pee-wee Herman Look-alike Contest

There will also be a Pee-wee Herman Look-alike Contest with a team of judges awarding prizes to three winners (adult male, adult female, and child under 12) with the best Pee-wee costume.

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure

An unexpected box-office smash when first released, this hilarious and head-scratchingly surreal motion picture has –in the intervening years– become a bona fide cult classic. Unfortunately, many people have never had the opportunity to see it as it was intended: on the big screen.

Co-written by Reubens and the late, great Saturday Night Live star Phil Hartman, and boasting a score by the Oscar-nominated Danny Elfman, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure follows snarky, idiosyncratic man-child Pee-wee Herman on an epic, cross-country quest to find and rescue his most prized possession: his custom-made, fire engine-red bicycle. The Faraways, a one-of-a-kind live theatrical musical show, will launch its national tour in Savannah, 7 PM Oct. 9 at the Savannah Mall.

This captivating new entertainment experience will be performed in a unique mobile “pop-up” theater that seats 200 and is a perfect addition to the growing live entertainment offerings at malls across the country.

The family-friendly show runs approximately one hour and fifteen minutes and has 6 cast members.

Teachers & homeschool groups, have you applied yet for Musical Explorers, Savannah Music Festival’s new partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute?

Musical Explorers has been a huge hit with New York City schools, and in 2014-15 Savannah Music Festival will be the first organization in the nation to adapt Musical Explorers for a community outside of New York.

Musical Explorers is a K-2 arts education program where students learn about their community, their city, their state and all the diverse musical styles that can be found in Georgia and the southeast. They also learn basic music skills and vocabulary. During the 2014-2015 school year, students explore various music styles including blues, classical, African-American spirituals, jazz, Slave Shouts, and bluegrass, embarking on a musical journey through the cultures found in and around Savannah.

For each genre of music, the students are “introduced” to a local artist, and songs and activities associated with the artist (3 artists per semester, 6 artists total). At the end of each semester, students meet the musicians they’ve learned about in the classroom live on stage, performing the songs from the curriculum in an interactive concert.

Each week young students will learn a variety of ceramic techniques. Children will create on the potter’s wheel and use several hand building methods as they unleash their imaginations as they create wonderful works of art. Each camp will have an inspirational theme and will be different each week, giving the opportunity for children to be involved in multiple camps.
