Enjoy a day celebrating Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art @ FREE Family Day @ Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center in Savannah. Theme: Monet to Matisse.

Children and families can try out pointillist painting techniques, make miniature Impressionist paintings, and go on a scavenger hunt of the exhibition.

Local artists will be on hand to lead plein air painting demonstrations in front of the museum, and local musicians will provide a program of Impressionist music in the auditorium at 2PM.

This event is free & open to the public.

Savannah Children’s Museum will host a day of healthy living and family fun, showcasing our many health and wellness programs and great community partnerships. The event, called “Healthy Me!” will take place on

The event will feature some Coastal Heritage Society’s Mobile Museum programs, including Cooking Matters using the Charlie Cart mobile kitchen and Bonnie’s Garden, a garden on wheels that can deliver nutritional programming at any location. Savannah Children’s Museum educators will also lead interactive programming that encourages whole body wellness.

Many of of the museum’s community partners will be on-site, including Yogi Palz offering kids yoga classes, The Memorial Health Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah will lead a veggie relay race, Dogwood Dentistry will teach the proper ways for kids to brush their teeth, Savannah Children’s Theatre will perform “Hansel and Gretel Learn How to Eat Right” at noon.

Healthy Savannah and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire will share information about their work in the Savannah community.

Some Savannah historic sites will offer free admission days, other programming highlighting African American history on Sat. Aug. 18 or Sun. Aug. 19 2018 as part of Lift Every Voice: Free Community Day.

Lift Every Voice: Savannah’s African American Historic Sites Free Day will offer free or reduced fee access and special programming relating to the contributions of Savannah’s African American people to the area’s history, from the colonial period through the 20th century.

The participating sites are: Beach Institute, in partnership with City of Savannah, Research Library and Municipal Archives; Georgia Historical Society; Georgia State Railroad Museum; Ossabaw Island Foundation; Pin Point Heritage Museum; and Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House; Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Programs at each site will focus on African American history connections and will include a variety of activities for guests of all ages.

Georgia State Railroad Museum & Pin Point Heritage Museum, Aug. 18

Georgia State Railroad Museum and Pin Point Heritage Museum in Savannah will participate in Lift Every Voice on Sat. Aug. 18 2018.

Georgia State Railroad Museum will give tours exploring the unique African American contributions to the history of the Central of Georgia Railway and other railroads throughout America. Visitors will learn about their expanded historical interpretation to share more diverse stories at this museum.

Pin Point Heritage Museum will offer tours about Gullah/Geechee culture, given by the residents who grew up in the small, close-knit community. Guests can learn about the unique lifeways, from daily life to religion, language and food. The Pin Point community was founded in 1896 by freedmen after the Civil War.

Free admission to Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House, Aug. 19

On Sun. Aug. 19, receive FREE admission to the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters in Savannah for a special tour focused on the lives of Emma, Peter, and Diane, who were some of the enslaved people who lived on the site.

Several Savannah area cultural organizations and sites are collaborating in August to honor our community’s African American history, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).

Lift Every Voice, whose name comes from the historic song of the same name by James Weldon Johnson, began as a global initiative by the Smithsonian, encouraging partners, organizations, and individuals who study, love, or support African American history and culture to join NMAAHC in their inaugural year celebration (2016- 2017).

Free admission to Fort Pulaski National Monument, Aug. 19

Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah will participate in Lift Every Voice: Savannah’s African American Historic Sites Free Days on Sun. Aug. 19, 2018.

The park will offer special programming highlighting the enslaved people’s courageous escapes to Union lines following the fort’s recapture in 1862. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about post-emancipation life on the Sea Islands and lift their own voices about what freedom and bravery mean to them.

The museum will open their doors from 9-11AM, so families can explore and enjoy the space with less concern regarding crowds (weather permitting).

Family Fourth of July programs @ Coastal Heritage Society sites, Savannah

Visit Coastal Heritage Society sites in Savannah during July 4th for “A Family Fourth,” family-friendly enhanced programming celebrating America’s Independence!

Savannah History Museum: Three Fold Chord to share interactive period dancing programs inside the museum in between regular Battlefield Tours at 10:30AM, 12:30PM & 2:30PM. There will also be a costumed Revolutionary War soldier stationed on the battlefield from 10AM-4PM. An educator will also be conducting a quill writing program with a Revolutionary War Mad-Lib activity at Savannah History Museum throughout the day.

Savannah Children’s Museum: a week-long theme of “Everyday Heroes” & “Patriotism.” On July 4th, there will be themed programs such as “Fireworks in a Jar” and “Fireworks Spin Art.”

Old Fort Jackson: firing Revolutionary War-era artillery, including the swivel gun, the six-pounder cannon, and flintlock muskets. There will be ongoing activities, such as cutting a 5-point star with one cut like Betsy Ross, signing the Declaration with a quill, and coloring sheets.

Georgia State Railroad Museum: featuring additional steam locomotive train rides at 11AM, 11:30AM, 1PM, 2PM, & 3PM.

The museum’s popular Juneteenth Free Family Day will June 9 2018 featuring a presentation of culture, storytelling and performance at the Jepson Center, from 1-4PM.

At this year’s event:

*Explore Gullah-Geechee connections through storytelling by Jamal Toure and Queen Quet.

*Enjoy hands-on art making for children and families, demonstrations by artists Sabree and Gregory Grant, a presentation by the Pin Point Heritage Museum, and a concert at 3pm by the renowned Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters.

2018 marks the twelfth year of Juneteenth celebrations at Telfair Museums. STEAM Fest

This activity for families, friends, and individuals is the perfect way to create a personalized sculpture. Using quick-setting, skin-safe materials, participants will make molds of their hands resulting in highly detailed, colorful, and expressive plaster casts. The process takes about an hour.

Howdy Partners! Amble on over to the Lawton Stables for a Memorial Day Celebration benefiting The Sandbox!

Monday, May 28th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Lawton Stables in Sea Pines Plantation

Activities (some free, some require activity tickets) scheduled include:

The Cowpoke Caper Parade is back again at High Noon! Come dressed as your favorite cowpoke and bring your cowpoke name – creativity is key! Free bandanas to the first 50 entries!

There will be hot dogs and burgers fresh off the grill, as well as refreshments including sno cones and cotton candy, all available for purchase. Admission is $5 per person; tickets for concessions and activities are $1 each.

$6 per vehicle for entry into Sea Pines Resort gate.

(Members:$5.00/person and you will receive $5 in concession tickets for each paid admission)

Guests will park at the Trolley Stop inside Sea Pines Gate and ride the free trolley to Lawton Stables. (there is NO Event parking at Lawton Stables)

Registration is open for Summer Camps 2018 @ Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah. 

Camp offerings for Summer 2018 at Savannah Children’s Museum & Georgia State Railroad Museum in Savannah include STEAM camp; Chef camp; Engineer Train camp; Young Explorers camp.

Camps are Mon-Fri from 9AM-2PM.

“STEAM Studio Camp” offers campers a chance to participate in exciting activities that fuse together Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math. Campers will experiment with various materials and tools to find creative solutions for the challenges that are presented to them each day. This camp is available for two age groups: 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 years old.

“Jr. Chef Camp” offers campers an opportunity to cook with Savannah Children’s Museum’s very own Charlie Cart Mobile Kitchen! Campers will engage in hands-on cooking lessons, preparing healthy snacks while learning about nutrition and health, history, science, math, and art!

“Jr. Engineer Train Camp” provides a unique experience that can only be found at Georgia State Railroad Museum! Campers will work alongside engineers, learn about steam and diesel-powered locomotives and engage in many interactive learning experiences. This camp is available for two age groups: 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 years old.

“Young Explorer Camp” offers an opportunity to discover the world and learn how to protect it for the future. Campers will learn about plants, animals, and other living things through games, activities and interactive experiences. This camp is available for two age groups: 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 years old.

Registration for these camps: $175 per child, aside from “Jr. Chef Camp,” which is $195 per child.

Discount: A discounted rate of $10 off of each camp registration is offered for Coastal Heritage Society members.

The camps will take place from June 4 through July 13. Pre-registration is required and tickets sell out fast!

Spend night in Ga’s oldest brick fort @ Old Fort Jackson Family Campover 2018, Savannah

Spend the night in Georgia’s oldest brick fort and experience history firsthand!

Registration is now open for the 2018 Old Fort Jackson Family Campover, the annual event for families to experience historic programs and family fun in a 210-year-old National Historic Landmark. The event will be Fri. March 9, 5PM through Sat. March 10 at 9AM at Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA 31404.

Check-in and tent set up will begin at 4PM and dinner will be served at 6:45PM. That night, guests will participate in historic military activities, play period appropriate games, make crafts, and drill on multiple stations throughout the fort.

The next morning campers will rise, pack up their gear, enjoy a hot breakfast, and participate in the event closing ceremonies. Preregistration and prepayment are required and tickets are $65 for children ages 4 to 15 years of age. Tickets: $45 for adults 16 years of age and older. Event tickets can be purchased online here.
