Meet Elizabeth St. Lawrence, stay-at-home mother of three who became a cloth-diaper enthusiast with the birth of her third daughter, Brianna (pictured here)

Your family:
Husband: Matthew. Three daughters: Alexandra (5), Samantha (4), and Brianna (6 months)

Liz, we understand you use cloth diapers. Are you nuts? Why did you decide to try cloth diapers this time around? And please tell us there’s no toilet dunking involved?

Honestly, I didn’t realize people still cloth diapered when I had my first two daughters! I think with the whole “green” movement the last few years combined with the economy, cloth diapers are making a great comeback. A few weeks before Brianna was born, I was giving into one of my guilty pleasures, Facebook, and one of my friends from high school mentioned cloth diapering on her status. I had to comment and bombard her with questions, and soon I was spending all of my free time researching cloth diapers!
There are a lot of valid reasons for cloth diapering; I will explain the reasons that “won” me over.

I love this post. It is so informative. More, it is inspiring. I bought a cloth diaper starter kit from Punch and Judy. Whitaker is six weeks old as I regret to say that we have only used the cloth diapers on two occasions. This interview is just the motivation that I need to get going on the green bus again. A ton of diapers? Oh, we can’t go there again this time. I vow that Whitaker will leave less of a foot print. I am betting his bottem dollar on it. Thanks for an excellent post!

I think it’s a bit of a misconception that cloth diapers have fallen out of common use. Most of the women I know, including myself cloth diaper. Many of us are now using prefolds with wool covers, even if we started out using all in ones like bum genius, or fuzzybuns, or bumkins. The low-cost of prefolds, there excellent performance, along with the ease of laundering them, makes them really appealing. They also are 100% cotton. The all-in-one’s have a petroleum based lining for waterproofing. The cotton and wool combination is the greenest choice, both for health and the environment. The prefolds being all cotton really do cut down on the rashes, as you are not trapping the moisture against the body with chemicals or plastics.
It’s nice to see that Southern Mama’s featured a cd’ing mom, and her perspective. For all those local cd’ing moms there is a Savannah based cloth diapering yahoo group that is a forum for questions and sharing opinions, and there are local moms out there making there own diapers and covers. It’s a great community with lots of people out there who have a ton of knowledge to share! It’s not scary if you have other mom’s to talk to who are veterans at it.

Just wanted to let you know that a lot of handmade venues, such as http://www.etsy.com have mothers who make very cute and unique cloth diapers too!

Thank you Anne Hart for this post on cloth diapers. Yes, there are those of us out there that realize using cloth diapers is as easy as Liz says it is! I appreciate the mention of the website for reselling diapers as I wondered how to locate another mom who could use the pre-folds and diaper liners after my son has outgrown them. As Christy said in her comment above, the first step is the most difficult. I purchased my Bummis kit online (you can find supplies less expensive online than what Punch & Judy charges) and then was too intimidated to use it the first few weeks after my son arrived. But then, I made the decision to move forward and NEVER looked back. I encourage other moms (and yes, Liz is correct, this is probably an easier venture for stay-at-home moms) to give this a go. I have good friends who laughed at me when I told them I decided to use cloth diapers but now, I am having the last laugh.
