ABOUT SMA ANGELS CHARITY INC.

SMA Angels Charity is a 100% volunteer, non-profit charity that was inspired by two amazing little girls, Cassie and Skylar Swanson. They were born March 7, 1997 and, at five months, were diagnosed with the deadly disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). These beautiful identical twins inspired not only their family, but a community of friends. Determined that no parent should ever again hear, “Your child, will never sit, stand or walk and they will die before the age of two,” this charity began its fight against SMA. The organization helps provide support for the crucial research to find a cure or treatment for SMA; sponsors investigation into the best quality of care for children with SMA; provides medical equipment and supplies to families of children with SMA; and continues to work to spread awareness and education about this deadly disease. Sensory Soft Sunday for families with children who have special needs, Savannah Children’s Museum

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

Sensory Soft Sunday for children with autism Savannah Savannah Children’s Museum will continue to host Sensory Soft Sunday as a unique offering for families with children who have special needs. Savannah Children’s Museum will open from 9-11am on Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 to provide these families an opportunity to make connections while enjoying SCM’s many exhibits in a sensory friendly way.

Through discussions with the special needs community, Savannah Children’s Museum discovered that there are few offerings of this kind in the region. Museum staff feel it is especially important to provide all children, regardless of age or ability, an opportunity to experience all that Savannah Children’s Museum has to offer.

The goal of Sensory Soft Sunday: provide an exclusive time period for the families of children with special needs in order to reduce anxiety and overstimulation that can occur when the museum is open to the general public. The trains at Georgia State Railroad Museum, our adjacent facility, will not operate during this exclusive time period, to eliminate the sound of whistles.

To promote a calm atmosphere, the number of attendees is limited. The staffing, however, is not reduced so families may have increased staff interaction as desired or needed. A designated ‘quiet zone’ is located in the orange caboose at Savannah Children’s Museum.

Pre-registration for Sensory Soft Sunday is required and payment is due upon arrival. To register, email Liz Stratford at Lstratford@chsgeorgia.org.

Cost: $7.50 per person over 18 months, free for Coastal Heritage Society Members
Time: 9am-11am on the following Sundays: Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15, Dec. 13

Since the mid 1980’s obesity has increased so that not only is it considered an epidemic, but it has become one of the most serious public health problems facing the United States. One in three children in Chatham County is considered obese. Studies show that overweight kids are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. To aid in curbing this growing epidemic, the Junior League of Savannah will host their third annual Fit Kids Fest on Saturday, April 18th, 2015 from 3-5PM at Optimist Field in Daffin Park.
