Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society to hold Camp Buddy Summer Camps in Chatham & Effingham counties

Sunday, June 30th, 2013

Savannah Down Syndrome Support Lowcountry Down Syndrome SocityThe Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) will hold Camp Buddy Summer Camps during Summer 2013. These educational, therapeutic and fun camps run over two weeks in Chatham and Effingham counties.

Chatham Camp Buddy is July 8th, 10th, 12th AND July 15th, 17th and 19th at Marshpoint Elementary School. For children aged 3-6 Chatham Camp Buddy runs from 9 am – 12:30 pm and for those over 6 years of age, it runs from 1- 4 pm.

Geared for children with Down syndrome, Camp Buddy offers educational, therapeutic and recreational activities that are specifically designed with these special kids in mind. Special education, occupational, physical and speech therapists have designed a customized curriculum that helps the children retain, over the summer break, what they worked so hard to accomplish during the previous school year.

This year, Chatham Camp Buddy will include a “preteen” group.

It can be crucial for these kids to not lose momentum when school closes for the summer. Camp Buddy promotes retention of these gains by bridging the summer months and helping prepare the children for the upcoming school year. To date over 40 individuals have attended Camp Buddy, including adults with Down syndrome, who assist the children with camp activities.

The camp is sponsored by the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society and is made possible through the generosity of the community, friends and family of LDSS and events like the Buddy Walk and other fundraisers —requiring participants to pay just $30 for each 5-day camp.

This year’s camp includes music, dance time, arts and crafts as well as bike, trike and scooter board riding. At the camp’s conclusion each camper is sent home with an individualized therapy plan, a medal and wonderful sense of accomplishment achieved through this exceptional day camp experience. Once again, Chef Nick Mueller (Chef Nick Mueller & Company Catering) will be providing hands on food preparation activities with the campers and Armstrong Physical Therapy students are volunteering their time and skills for Camp Buddy.

The seventh annual Buddy Walk for the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society is planned for October 5, 2012 at Forsyth Park. During October, National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, more than 300 Buddy Walks will occur throughout the United States. Last year over 4,500 people came out to support Down Syndrome awareness in the Savannah area. For more information about the Buddy Walk, please contact John or Cindy Bogardus at (912) 728-8505. http://www.ldssga.org

City seeks input on Savannah public safety issues

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

Is there a public safety issue in Savannah that you’re really worried about?

Maybe you believe police chases shouldn’t happen near schools or densely populated residential areas like the one through East Savannah & Ardsley Park at school dismissal time on Wed. May 1? Or maybe you’re worried about our city’s home burglary problem? Or maybe you want the mayor & city council to do more to curb gun violence in Savannah & to work to extend background checks to online and private gun purchases as well as gun show sales?

Here’s your chance to make your case.

This week the City of Savannah is reaching out its citizens for their thoughts and ideas on public safety.

Residents can share their input in a special online form available at www.savannahga.gov/publicsafetycomment through noon on Friday, May 17th.

The comments will be compiled and presented to a special Public Safety Roundtable that will meet Monday, May 20, at 2 p.m. in the Savannah Civic Center. The Roundtable will be comprised of the top elected and appointed officials representing the major entities that touch public safety, including law enforcement, the courts, probation and parole, education, city and county governments, and various nonprofits and the faith-based community.

The goal of the Roundtable will be to identify key issues impacting public safety in our community, and begin a process that will create an action plan to make our community safer. The Roundtable wants to hear from the public on this matter, and has set up the online form to solicit input.

SAVANNAH MOTHER’S DAY WALK: Eight mothers lose a child to gun violence every day in America. That is simply unacceptable.

Join us 4 PM Sunday, May 12th for a family-friendly Mother’s Day Walk in Savannah’s Forsyth Park. Participants are asked to carry 8 paper flowers to honor the 8 children lost to gun violence every day in this country. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to take a stand for common sense gun control laws to protect ALL our children!

Moms Demand Action is a non-partisan group of moms, dads, friends and concerned citizens devoted to enacting common sense gun legislation like universal background checks.
