SouthCoast Health offers tips on how to make healthy choices that impact the smaller, often-overlooked organs, such as your eyes, as well as what habits might be harming your vision.
“We know that interactions with screens are nearly unavoidable in our current culture,” says SouthCoast Health optometrist, Edward D. Sammons, O.D., (pictured) “but excessive use can be harmful to more than your eyes. Moderation and management is definitely key.”
“Take regular breaks using the ‘20-20-20’ rule: every 20 minutes,” recommends the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds.”
Learn more about other habits that may be damaging your vision here.

To improve women’s health throughout the nation, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health created National Women’s Health Week, which begins on Mother’s Day each year.
This annual observance strives to empower women to learn about their health and the many services available to them.
It is highly encouraged that women use this week to start a new way of living. To adapt a lifestyle that leads to more preventative screenings, being more active, eating healthier, paying closer attention to mental and physical health, quitting smoking, and even stopping phone use while driving.
If you’re looking to kick-start a new, healthier lifestyle in honor of Women’s Health Week, schedule an appointment with one of SouthCoast Health primary care physicians today or give us a call at 912-691-3600.

While the kidneys may only be about the size of your fist, these bean-shaped organs are vital to the function of your body. Healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood every minute, remove waste, and produce urine.
Only an estimated 10% of people with kidney disease know they have it.
“The signs of kidney problems mimic symptoms of other conditions,” says SouthCoast Health Nephrologist Dr. Nizar Eskandar. “This often prevents patients from getting help for their kidney issues early on, when treatment is most likely to be effective.”
SouthCoast Health urges you to seek medical attention at the first signs of any kidney problems. Find some of common symptoms of kidney problems to watch out for here.

In honor of February being American Heart Month, SouthCoast Health experts dive into the biggest signs of heart attacks you should never ignore.
“The tricky thing is that so many other symptoms can be confused with a heart attack,” SouthCoast Health Cardiologist Dr. Akinniran Abisogun stated. “Heart burn, a pulled muscle, pancreatitis, muscle spasms, and so many other medical conditions may be misleading to what is truly happening.”
February is Children’s Dental Health Month and this year’s theme is “Sealants Make Sense.” Although brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits are important for your child’s oral health, sealants can offer additional protection against cavities. SouthCoast Health Dietetic Counselor Rebekah M. However, it’s not a great to limit what you eat and torture yourself when it comes to your diet.
