I Have Marks to Make
Jepson Center
Help celebrate the creative spirit and the accomplishments of Savannah artists young and old at Telfair’s annual I Have Marks to Make exhibition. Exploring the empowerment of people through art, the exhibition features works by individuals with disabilities and work by others making art in rehabilitation from injury or illness. Make your own mark in drawing and painting activities led by talented local artists participating in the exhibition, and take part in a moving program of poetry readings and performances at 2 pm, followed by a reception.

Ride the Savannah River water ferry (free Savannah kids’ activities)

Kids love to ride one of the FREE water ferries with Savannah Belles Ferry system on River Street. Or if you want to make River Street your destination, catch it on the other side of the Savannah River @ the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort & Spa on Hutchinson Island.

The free ferries shuttle you from River Street, across the Savannah River, to the Westin, with departures with arrivals every 15–20 minutes from 7:00 AM until 12 AM (subject to weather and river traffic conditions)

While @ the Westin Savannah, enjoying your treat at the Midnight Cafe, check out the bush playhouse near the ferry landing.

While on River Street, be sure to ride the rails on the FREE River Street Streetcar – an authentic 1930s Melbourne streetcar – that runs back and forth on River Street. There’s a streetcar stop right by the ferry dock, in front of City Hall and the visitors center. (UPDATE: STREETCAR IS TEMPORARY OUT OF SERVICE FOR MAINTENANCE)

The River Street Streetcar runs Noon-9 PM Fri-Sun with the exceptions of First Saturdays festivities each month when it stops running at 6:30 PM. The 54-passenger streetcar is updated with environmentally-friendly green technology. It makes six stops along Historic River Street between Montgomery St. & the Waving Girl Landing

Explore the OT House
Owens-Thomas House

Join us for an afternoon of history, craft demonstrations, and exploration at the Owens-Thomas House. The main floor of the house will be open for interpretive tours in which families will meet characters from the history of the house, including Mary Maxwell and the Marquis de Lafayette, and learn about tea and entertaining customs of the period. Visitors will see demonstrations of traditional methods of spinning and bread making and learn to play games like marbles that were likely played by both the enslaved children and the free children in the household. Families will also see a demonstration of the faux-finishing techniques used in the house and participate in a hands-on marbleizing activity.

Get ready for Monet and create lasting impressions at the historic Telfair Academy by exploring the painting techniques and the color theory that inspired one of the greatest movements in art. Every third Saturday evening during the summer months at Memorial Park on Tybee Island, a family friendly movie will be projected on the side of the Tybee Gym compliments of the City of Tybee Island’s Development Authority / Main Street Program and Partners.

Please note that the movie start time is an estimate. The movie will begin when it is dark enough for it to be visible once projected on the gym.

A classic on Hilton Head Is. for almost four decades, Gregg Russell Concerts under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town happen regularly during summer (weather permitting) & periodically during spring. Details here.

3. Free petting farm at Lawton Stables in Sea Pines

The free animal farm includes a deer named Callie, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, turtles, cows and rabbits.  Kids can also pet a friendly retired Clydesdale, Harley, at the stables. 4. The wildflower garden & hiking trails in the free Sea Pines Forest Preserve

The 605-acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve includes easy trails to various points of interest including the 4,000-year-old Indian Shell Ring, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a wildflower garden that’s amazing when in bloom. The walks range from 25 minutes to one hour. Bicycles are not permitted on the nature trails, so please park your bicycles at the locations provided. Open from sunrise to sunset. The Forest Preserve is free; there’s a $6 Sea Pines gate fee per auto. More info here.

6. The Sandbox Interactive Children’s Museum

9. Gregg Russell Playground at Harbour Town, Sea Pines

The Gregg Russell Playground at Harbour Town is one of the top playgrounds in our area. Fenced, somewhat shaded playground that includes a treehouse; swings; numerous slides; lots of climbing bars, jungle gym bars, monkey bars. 10. FREE historical Stoney-Baynard Ruins, Sea Pines

The ruins of the old Baynard estate, the main house as well as attendant slave quarters, are permanently preserved within six-acre Baynard Ruins Park. The home was raided during the Civil War and Union forces made it their headquarters. Details here. The ruins are free; there’s a $6 Sea Pines gate fee per auto.

The City of Richmond Hill revamped Farmer’s Market. Each Tuesday from April until mid-October, the market will offer the best in local produce and crafts. The City has extended shopping hours from 2PM-7PM. The following vendors will be part of the Richmond Hill Farmer’s Market the entire season: Hardwicke Farms, Sage Wishes, FraLi Gourmet, Savannah River Farms, Woodland Swamp Farm, Sikes Honey, Foods of the Farm, and Farm Fresh Produce.

FREE Family Stargazing Night @ Coastal Ga. Botanical Gardens, Savannah, May 23

Don’t miss the FREE Spring family stargazing event @ Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah: Gazing in the Garden.

The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in conjunction with the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association invite you to a free stargazing event starting at dusk around 8:30PM until 10PM.

Before the star-gazing, enjoy a 1950s sci-fi flick in the Visitors Center at 7:30PM

After the late May sun sets at 8:20 pm and the sky darkens, the thin crescent moon becomes more visible and doesn’t set till just after midnight. Come to the Event Field for viewing of the waxing moon, constellations and Milky Way Galaxy through various-size telescopes that Association members (or you) bring.

Feel free to use the renovated Canebrake Road entrance and new parking lot at the new Visitor & Education Center. Dress for the evening weather, bring a favorite cold or hot beverage, lawn chair and snack basket (alcohol is prohibited). Be aware that semi-dormant fire ants may be under your blanket or chair on your particular chosen spot on the lawn.

Beginning in March 2015,  All Children’s Rehab & Specialty Clinic in Savannah will offer FREE language enrichment programs for children ages 3-5, 12:30-1:30PM Tuesdays & Thursdays.

The goal of the enrichment program is to help children: develop emergent literacy skills, strengthen phonemic awareness, develop important basic and content vocabulary, and build comprehension and writing skills through highly engaging activities that have an emphasis on listening, speaking reading, and writing while using high interest materials. music and literacy.

Junior Park Rangers

Junior Ranger programs at National Parks in Savannah, CharlestonWhen you take kids to tour national parks, you never know how much they are getting out of the visit. Especially for those of us moms who aren’t exactly history experts.

Which is why you need to pick up the Junior Ranger booklets at the visitor centers of national parks you visit. The Junior Ranger program kids engage more during the visits.

Junior Ranger booklets have activities about the national parks for ages 5-12. Junior ranger books are free to any visitor and usually are available at the visitors’ centers. Often, similar programs with more advanced activities are also available for older kids. Just ask at the site’s visitor center.

While doing the activities, children enjoy earning a badge and a certificate.

Free Kids' Home Depot Workshops in Savannah, Pooler, Hilton Head The Home Depot Kids Workshop is a free class for kids held the 1st Saturday of every month at The Home Depot stores between 9 AM-Noon. More info here.

When a child goes to the Home Depot Kids Workshop, they’ll get a free project kit they can complete and take home during they workshop. They’ll also get a free kid sized orange apron and an achievement pin for a job well done.

The Home Depot Kids Workshop is similar to the Lowe’s free Build and Grow Clinics for kids held on weekends at Lowe’s stores. For info on the Lowe’s Build and Grow free workshops, click here.

  • Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.
